- Reedy, squinty-eyed, British character actor of glum countenance. Variously worked as a magician's assistant, a racing driver and stand-up comedian, before becoming a newsreader for the BBC. Subsequently acted in films, television and radio, often playing officious or bureaucratic types. Effective as Inspector Lestrade opposite Douglas Wilmer's Sherlock Holmes in the TV series of 1965.
