The Minute You Wake Up Dead – Review
Image
Morgan Freeman in director Michael Mailer’s suspense tale The Minute You Wake Up Dead. Courtesy of Saban Films.

The Minute You Wake Up Dead is a title that looms as ominously as it plays for a concept that aptly grows in levels of menace as this quiet, twisty suspense tale unfolds.

The setting is a small, less-than-wealthy Southern town. An investment broker (Cole Hauser) has done well by his fellow citizens in the past, but has just cost a whole lotta folks a whole lotta money when a huge deal he’d touted fell apart, making their extremely non-discretionary funds evaporate.

We meet him as he enters the local diner to icy stares from all, and threats from a few, as he’s just become the redneck version of Bernie Madoff. The hot waitress (Jaime Alexander) he’d had a crush on since their school days is the only...

Lionsgate Home Entertainment has released the first trailer for The Minute You Wake Up Dead, which finds Morgan Freeman starring as a sheriff who sets out to solve a shocking murder.

Be warned, the trailer for The Minute You Wake Up Dead does appear to spell out much of the movie, so keep that in mind before you watch. The Minute You Wake Up Dead was directed by Michael Mailer (Heart of Champions), who co-wrote the screenplay with Timothy Holland. In addition to Morgan Freeman, The Minute You Wake Up Dead also stars Jaimie Alexander (Thor: Love and Thunder) and Cole Hauser (Yellowstone). “This sexy, riveting noir thriller will keep you guessing,” reads the official synopsis. “After a shady small-town stockbroker begins dating a shy waitress, a...

‘Heart of Champions’ Review: College Rowing Drama Treads Familiar Water
Image
As inspirational college sports movies go, “Heart of the Champions” doesn’t go, or row, nearly far enough off the beaten path. It’s every bit as boilerplate as its generic title might indicate, distinguished only by its focus on an underdog rowing team rather than the amateur baseball, basketball, football or hockey players usually involved in similar scenarios. There’s just so much even a fine actor like Michael Shannon can do to freshen such stale material, even when he’s given a plum role as a demanding coach who expects the impossible from his young charges. Of course, he might have been able to do more had he also been given more screen time, but, alas, we’ll never know.

The time is 1999-2000, and the place is the fictional Beeston University, an institution of higher learning that desperately needs a new coach after its rowing team finishes...
