Max, formerly (and still in some regions) known as HBO Max, is among the top streaming services in the world, thanks to the wide range of programs it offers from libraries of Discovery, HBO, Cartoon Network, Adult Swim, and many others. Grimmfest keep on delivering the goods despite a worldwide pandemic. Their latest treat comes along with the May Bank Holiday and includes Cody Calahan’s latest movie Vicious Fun.

Set in the eighties, the crazy story has us follow a horror movie journalist (instantly relatable to a big chunk of this films audience!) who somehow ends up in a self-help group for serial killers. When his attempts at blending in don’t go to plan he has to work out a way to survive… I’m glad the word fun is in the title of this movie. It is often something that people seem to think is a less than positive way of describing films. But I love films that are fun and it is a perfect description here.

We’ve seen Elisabeth Moss take on corporate male toxicity in Mad Men, a ghost of a man in The Invisible Man, Gilead in The Handmaid’s Tale and punk rock in Her Smell. This weekend we’ll see her as a horror author who tries not to unravel as she goes through her creative process in the Josephine Decker-directed Shirley.

The film, which is adapted from Susan Scarf Merrell’s 2014 novel of the same name, bowed at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year and is based on the real-life horror author Shirley Jackson and her husband Stanley Hyman.

“We were not making a film that we ever thought, ‘Oh, we’re making a film about the real Shirley Jackson’,” Decker told Deadline at Sundance. “In fact, the script really meshed up a bunch of timelines in the real Shirley Jackson’s life, so it absolutely was a fiction.

Comedians going dark can sometimes lead to a real cinematic discovery. They don’t even need to necessarily go dark, but to show another side of themselves is often a joy to witness. Look no further than Adam Sandler’s revelatory turn last year in Uncut Gems, continuing what he’s been able to show in work like Punch Drunk Love. Now, Sandler’s pal Kevin James takes a crack at it in the thriller Becky, a gory gender swapped take on material covered far lighter in Home Alone. James is certainly chillingly evil here, but the mean streak, especially in relation to dogs, found here ends up soiling the picture. The movie is a thriller, beginning with some father/daughter drama. Becky (Lulu Wilson) is headed to her family’s lake house with her father Jeff (Joel McHale) and their two dogs, sometime after her mother/his wife has passed away.

Thirteen can be a petulant age, but hell hath no fury like the pubescent heroine of “Becky,” who has the ill luck to confront a gang of escaped cons — though that’s definitely worse luck for them, as it turns out. Offering fairly brutal action on the verge of black comedy, this indie thriller from the directorial duo of Cary Murnion and Jonathan Milott is lean, mean, nasty fun that will appeal to genre fans with hard-edged tastes. The 2020 summer movie season is one like never before. With social distancing and shelter-in-place regulations shutting down theaters across the world, the film industry is in uncharted waters. What was set up to be a season for studios to unleash expensive and highly anticipated tentpoles has been truncated and diminished by frequent calendar adjustments and looming uncertainty.

Many of the films that were poised to be the biggest hits of the summer have been pushed back. Marvel’s “Black Widow,” Paramount’s “Top Gun: Maverick” and Warner Bros.’ “Wonder Woman 1984” have all staked out new release dates for later this year. Directed by Cary Murnion and Jonathan Milott (the filmmakers behind Cooties and Bushwick), Becky is coming to VOD and Digital on June 5th, and the film's trailer offers a look at James' intense character that's a far cry from his comedic roles.

Earlier this year it was reported that Kevin James will star as a "merciless" convict who invades a lake home in the action thriller Becky, the latest film from directors Jonathan Milott and Cary Murnion. The home invasion movie will pit James against Lulu Wilson as the teenage title character, and now Joel McHale has joined the cast as Wilson's father, along with additional cast members Amanda Brugel and Robert Maillet.

“Community” alum Joel McHale and “The Handmaid’s Tale” star Amanda Brugel are joining the cast of the action thriller “Becky,” which is being directed by Jonathan Milott and Cary Murnion, directors of the Sundance film “Bushwick.”

The signing was announced by Highland Film Group, which will be handling international sales for the film at the Toronto International Film Festival. Robert Maillet (“Pacific Rim”) is also joining the cast, which is being led by Lulu Wilson (“The Haunting of Hill House”) and Kevin James.

Joel McHale, The Handmaid’s Tale actress Amanda Brugel, and Robert Maillet have been added to the cast of Becky, an action-thriller which is being helmed by Bushwick directors Jonathan Milott and Cary Murnion. Kevin James was previously announced as the villain of the film while Lulu Wilson will take on the titular role.

Jordan Yale Levine, Jordan Beckerman and Russ Posternak of Yale Productions are producing the pic alongside Raphael Margules and J.D. Lifshitz of BoulderLight Pictures.

It centers around a spunky, rebellious 14-year-old Becky as she is brought to a weekend getaway at a lake house by her father Jeff (McHale) in an effort to try to reconnect after her mother’s death. The trip immediately takes a turn for the worse when a group of convicts on the run, led by the merciless Dominick (James), suddenly invade the lake house.

Joel McHale, Amanda Brugel and Robert Maillet have joined the cast of the independent action-thriller “Becky.”

The trio will appear alongside the previously announced company of Kevin James and Lulu Wilson.

The movie follows a spunky, rebellious 14-year-old brought to a weekend getaway at a lake house by her father (played by McHale), in an effort to try to reconnect after her mother’s death. The trip immediately takes a turn for the worse when a group of convicts on the run, led by James’ merciless character, suddenly invade the lake house. Becky decides to take matters into her own hands in the film, described as John Wick with a 14-year-old girl.

“Becky” is the third feature from directors Jonathan Milott and Cary Murnion, the filmmakers behind “Bushwick” and “Cooties.”

Short film almost always equals low budget. Now, this is of course not a problem, but I point it out when talking about The Shipment because it either spends a low budget extremely well or it has a much bigger budget than any short I have watched before [this was actually made for $1million! - Editor Phil].

I say this because of how visually stunning The Shipment is. I was not expecting it to look this great. The spaceships look futuristic, vast and stylish, the characters (through practical effects and CGI I believe) look like something out of a new Star Wars movie and the world which it is all surrounded by looks nothing short of jaw-dropping! The Shipment really does need to be seen to believed. I could easily assume that the budget for the CGI effects alone took up the majority of this films budget.

Directed by Jonas Åkerlund, Polar is the latest graphic novel adaption in the world of cinema, in particular, to hit Netflix. Starring Mads Mikkelsen as retired assassin Duncan Vizla hunted down by the shady assassin syndicate who once employed his services as a seasoned killer. The result, while enjoyable on occasion with a multitude of outrageous action set pieces is on a whole overabundantly dependable on a repellent colour grading and boorish style with peevish misogyny.

Polar offers a great deal of bloodshed and abstract character yet sadly thinks they’re the highlight of a picture that denies the audience even a minuscule or basic form of personal engagement or depth.

It’s a Mads, Mads world. Netflix has released the trailer for its Mads Mikkelsen-Vanessa Hudgens movie “Polar,” and lots of people who lived by the gun are going to die by the gun.

In the action flick, the world’s top assassin, Duncan Vizla — a.k.a. The Black Kaiser (Mikkelsen) — is settling into retirement when his former employer marks him as a liability to the firm, per the streaming service’s official description. Against his will, he finds himself back in the game going head to head with an army of younger, faster, ruthless killers who will stop at nothing to have him silenced.

Also, Vizla’s pending $8 million pension seems like a pretty good (company) reason to off the hard-to-off dude.

Some films are just crap, but Septic Man is literally about it. In the first few minutes you may get to see a lot of human waste, but if truth be told if the movie has a bigger problem than that… it may be slightly constipated.

The smartest move FX’s vampire horror series The Strain makes in its return is opening its first episode with Abraham Setrakian (David Bradley), and a little history. Setrakian is the show’s most heroic character, a strigoi-slaying badass with a sword cane and inestimable amounts of knowledge, and The Strain is at its best when it’s able to show off its effects and its action sequences. So the choice to kick off Season 2 with a look back at the mythology and chaos that created The Master (Robert Maillet) is the perfect way to reorient viewers with the world, and get everyone excited about the season to come. From there, though, things are a little less certain. The Strain may have just concluded its first season, but the fun continued last week during the New York Comic-Con Lunar Eclipse party. Fans of the FX series were invited to The Delancy Rooftop Garden Nightclub where some of the cast, including Mia Maestro, Natalie Brown, Jim Watson, Robert Maillet and Robin Atkin Downes, were in attendance.

Created by Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan, who also penned the trilogy that spawned the show, The Strain follows Cdc workers Eph (Corey Stoll) and Nora (Maestro) as they battle the outbreak of a vampiric infection. Though it had its ups and downs, the first season of FX’s spooky series went over quite well with fans and critics alike, providing a ton of fun and thrills along the way.
