Prior to beginning his acting career, he was a disc jockey on 1050 CHUM radio in Toronto in 1949.

He starred in a Bell Canada series of television commercials called "The Boss" in which he played the title role for ten years beginning in 1981.

Son, Danny Mann, has also done voice work, most notably playing "Ferdinand" in Babe (1995).

Brother of Paul Mann.

Mann's menacing, but rarely raised in overt anger, speech patterns were similar to those of actor Sydney Greenstreet, who, like Mann, often played villainous oddballs.
