Lashana Lynch (‘Bob Marley: One Love’): The reggae legend ‘wanted people to feel like they had their own radical spirit’
Image
While in discussion to play Rita Marley in “Bob Marley: One Love,” actress Lashana Lynch “met up with [director] Reinaldo Green just to discuss, selfishly, my thoughts on being a Jamaican woman” and, “artist-to artist,” she wanted to “express the importance of the authenticity that will eventually be portrayed in this movie, which a lot of it boils down to accent. I wanted to know that I was auditioning for a project that would protect the accents, protect patois, and really represent Jamaica in the way that I know it deserves.” Watch our complete video interview with Lynch above.

Kingsley Ben-Adir (‘Bob Marley: One Love’): Biopic was ‘a little bit overwhelming,’ but ‘I couldn’t walk away from it’
Image
Kingsley Ben-Adir admits that it was “a little bit overwhelming” to tackle the role of legendary reggae star Bob Marley in “Bob Marley: One Love” because of “the amount of new things that I was gonna have to get a hold of,” from his music to his language, “but I was also up for the challenge, and after I met [Bob Marley’s son Ziggy Marley, who produced the film,] and I spoke to the family, I really felt like I couldn’t walk away from it. It was too incredible an opportunity.” Watch our complete video interview with Ben-Adir above.

How the Simplicity of Bob Marley: One Love Lets Down Its Complex Subject
Image
Quick Links What Is Bob: Marley One Love About? What the Biopic Fails to Address Bob Marley Derseves Better

One of the biggest surprise hit movies at the international box office, Bob Marley: One Love struck a chord with the masses upon release in February 2024. Yet, for all the commercial success, earning roughly $180 million worldwide (via Box Office Mojo), most agree that the film is a standard, run-of-the-mill biopic that robs the brilliant artist's subject of a fully-rounded portrait. Despite the radiant charms of star Kingsley Ben-Adir in the lead role, the film sanitizes Bob Marley's life story to tell an uplifting story of a positive role model overcoming poverty in Jamaica to achieve international superstardom.

There's a stultifying simplicity to the movie that does a disservice to the three-dimensional complexity Bob Marley was known for. Most telling, the lack of compelling high-stakes drama makes the movie feel like a...

One Love: How Many Children & Wives Bob Marley Had In Real Life
Image
Although some of Bob Marley and his wife Rita's children are portrayed in Bob Marley: One Love, the film does not explicitly address the number of children he had nor does it indicate if he had any other wives. Bob Marley's only wife was Rita Marley, but he cheated on her with numerous women. Bob Marley had 11 children in total, six of whom he fathered via extramarital affairs.

The new biopic Bob Marley: One Love doesn't provide the fullest picture of the famous singer's family life, including how many wives and children he had in real life. Directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green, Bob Marley: One Love explains the true story of the eponymous artist's rise to fame as a reggae pioneer and peace advocate, starring Kingsley Ben-Adir as Marley. Also a part of the Bob Marley: One Love cast are Lashana Lynch as Bob's wife, Rita Marley, and James Norton as Chris Blackwell,...

'Bob Marley – One Love' Solidifies Lashana Lynch as a Rising Star
Image
On paper, Lashana Lynch doesn’t get a lot to do as Rita Marley, the significant other of Bob Marley (Kingsley Ben-Adir) in Bob Marley: One Love. She’s fulfilling the “dutiful wife/girlfriend” archetype that populates so many music biopics about famous male musicians. Whether it’s Maestro, Walk the Line, Elvis, or so many others, such roles typically only afford ladies the chance to portray women engaging in heightened arguments with their spouse before later giving some inspirational speech about how their man is the only one who can “change the world.” In the hands of Lynch, though, Rita Marley shows sparkles of life crammed with way more depth than anything that’s on the page.

Ziggy Marley Talks ‘Bob Marley: One Love’s’ Surprise Box Office Success: ‘The Critics Don’t Get It, but the People Get It’
Image
Before “Bob Marley: One Love” hit theaters on Valentine’s Day, the musical biopic about the Reggae legend was expected to sing its way to No. 1 on the charts.

But box office projections indicated the Paramount movie — which chronicles Marley’s (Kingsley Ben-Adir) rise to fame in the mid-1970s and complex relationship with his wife Rita Marley (Lashana Lynch) up until he died in 1981 — would start slow. It looked like it would collect $30 million and $35 million during the six days between Valentine’s Day on Wednesday and Presidents’ Day on Monday.

Instead, “One Love” smashed those expectations, earning $52 million during the extended holiday stretch. It remained victorious in its sophomore outing (despite the presence of three new releases), raising its domestic total to $71 million. After three weeks in theaters, the film is nearing the $150 million mark globally. It’s an impressive benchmark for a PG-13 drama that’s aimed...

Why Bob Marley: One Love's Rotten Tomatoes Score Is Bad (But Audiences Love It)
Image
Critics find Bob Marley: One Love a standard biopic, with a 42% Rotten Tomatoes rating. Audiences gave the film a 93% score, praising it as a beautiful tribute to Bob Marley's legacy. The movie's divisive reception showcases a stark contrast between critic and fan opinions.

The difference between what critics think of Bob Marley: One Love and what fans think of the movie is stark, and a few reasons explain why their outlooks contrast so greatly. The 2024 biographical musical drama, directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green and written by Green, Terence Winter, Frank E. Box Office: ‘Bob Marley: One Love’ Gets Together $7.4 Million on Friday, ‘Madame Web’ Falls Behind With $4.3 Million
Image
Paramount’s “Bob Marley: One Love” continued its run as box office leader through the specialized six-day holiday frame, adding $7.4 million on Friday from 3,539 locations to bump its domestic tally to $25.3 million. The biopic about the reggae legend could even double the six-day haul of Sony’s new superhero film “Madame Web,” which earned $4.3 million from 4,013 theaters on Friday. North American haul for the Marvel Comics adaptation currently stands at $12.5 million.

Both features opened on Valentine’s Day and are hoping to carry momentum through the Presidents’ Day holiday. “One Love” asserted itself out of the gate with an impressive $14 million on Wednesday, boosted by a handful of premium large-format auditoriums (“Madame Web” has the majority though). Though the Reinaldo Marcus Green-directed drama landed mediocre reviews, it resonated with early audiences, nabbing an “A” grade from surveyor Cinema Score. Rita Marley founded multiple foundations and charities to continue honoring Bob Marley's legacy and alleviate poverty. Rita Marley suffered a stroke in 2016 but has recovered and is still alive.

Bob Marley: One Love Review – A Sanitized Homage to Peace, Love and Unity
Image
I was both excited and worried for Bob Marley: One Love, a biopic about one of the most emblematic figures in Jamaica’s history, who deeply impacted its cultural and political landscape by becoming a pioneer of the reggae music genre and, ultimately, a global icon. Reinaldo Marcus Green being announced as the director instantly caught my attention since, after all, he’s the filmmaker responsible for one of my favorite biopics of the century, King Richard. However, the involvement of multiple screenwriters – Terence Winter (The Wolf of Wall Street), Frank E. Flowers (Shooting Stars), Zach Baylin (Gran Turismo), and Green himself – as well as Marley’s family production company, raised concerns about potential biases and a lack of critical depth.

Box Office: ‘Bob Marley: One Love’ Earns $3.8 Million, ‘Madame Web’ Ensnares $2.2 Million
Image
Without Valentine’s Day date nights to bolster grosses, ticket sales for “Bob Marley: One Love” fell sharply on Thursday.

The drama about the reggae legend earned $3.8 million in its second day of release, a 73% drop from its debut that brings its stateside total to $17.9 million. The Paramount release is hoping to hit the right notes over Presidents Day. It is projected to earn $30 million to $35 million over the six-day holiday stretch.

Its main competition is from Sony’s “Madame Web,” which is the studio’s latest attempt to expand its Spider-verse of Peter Parker-adjacent heroes and villains. Sony has had a mixed track record, scoring with the likes of “Venom” while falling flat with “Morbius.” “Madame Web” grossed $2.2 million its second day of release, bringing its domestic total to $8.2 million. ‘Bob Marley: One Love’ director: Marley’s purpose was to share his music
Image
Bob Marley: One Love’ director Reinaldo Marcus Green has spoken about the legendary Jamaican musician and said that the reggae singer’s purpose was to share his music with as many people as possible.

Reminiscing about Marley, Green said: “His purpose was to share his music with as many people as would listen. Bob’s untimely death left the world the gift of his music, but most of the world doesn’t know the real man or the real struggle. This story is for the kids who don’t know Bob or his music, for a new generation of fans.”

The director also sheds light on Rita Marley also known as Alfarita Constantia Marley, who was not only Bob’s wife but also a member of his band and later took on the role of an entrepreneur.

In today’s challenged theatrical marketplace, it’s particularly pleasing when a plan works out. Slotted against an underperforming Madame Web for President’s Day weekend, Paramount Pictures’ Bob Marley: One Love on Wednesday set the Valentine’s Day opening record with a $14 million gross, and the film has a nice chance to eclipse the initial $30 million long weekend projections. Per Rotten Tomatoes, the Paramount film has pleased audiences (95% approval) more than critics (44%), but Reinaldo Marcus Green’s skillfully made biopic of an iconic artist...

Bob Marley: One Love Ending Explained
Image
Warning: This post contains spoilers for Bob Marley: One Love

Bob Marley: One Love centers on the reggae singer's life, including his career peak and battle with melanoma. The One Love Peace Concert brought together Jamaican political figures but did not end the violence and political tensions. Marley continued touring and recording music after the concert, but his cancer ultimately led to the cancellation of his tour and his death in 1981.

Bob Marley: One Love centers the reggae singer’s life, ending with archival footage from the real-life One Love Peace Concert that was held in Jamaica in 1978. Starring Kingsley Ben-Adir as Bob Marley, the biopic follows the music icon at the height of his career, during the years of 1976 and 1978. One Love ends with Bob Marley learning that he has acral lentiginous melanoma, a rare skin cancer, after a toe injury refused to heal. Marley was still on...

Kingsley Ben-Adir in Bob Marley: One Love (2024)
Box Office: ‘Bob Marley: One Love’ Easily Beats ‘Madame Web’ Over Valentine’s Day
Kingsley Ben-Adir in Bob Marley: One Love (2024)
Paramount’s “Bob Marley: One Love” stirred things up at the Valentine’s Day box office. The biopic about the reggae legend is outpacing estimates after opening to $14 million domestically. It added $4.9 million to its haul from 10 overseas markets, including the U.K., France and Spain. Its global gross stands at $19.4 million.

Those domestic numbers easily overshadow the opening of Sony’s “Madame Web,” the latest entry in the studio’s hit-and-miss, cinematic Spider-verse. The comic book adaptation generated a little over $6 million domestically.

“Bob Marley: One Love” was initially projected to collect $30 million to $35 million stateside between Wednesday and President’s Day on Monday. But unless the grosses are front-loaded, it could exceed those estimates. “Madame Web” is expected to generate $26 million during the same six-day period.

Neither film was cheap. “Bob Marley” cost $70 million and “Madame Web” carries an $80 million budget — and those figures don’t includes...

Review: Bob Marley: One Love Is an Outstanding Exercise in Subtlety
Image
Often dramatic, lurid and emotionally fraught, biopics can be gratuitous in their portrayals of real-life figures. Bob Marley: One Love defies genre convention with its subtle, gentle approach. Rather than exploring the entirety of Marley's life story, One Love zeroes in on a particular, pivotal era in Marley's life. Vignettes of Marley's past -- including his childhood, his discovery of the Rastafari religion and meeting his wife Rita -- are featured in hazy memory sequences, Bob Marley: One Love is a smaller, intimate, and more insular portrait of the artist and his closest friends.

In the mid 1970s, Jamaica is viciously divided, struggling with great political unrest. In the midst of the chaos, Bob Marley decides to throw a concert, intending to unite the country. However, when violence strikes close to home, Marley embarks on a self-imposed exodus and is soon followed by his friends, bandmates and family.

Bob Marley: One Love Review
Image
Plot: The story of how reggae icon Bob Marley overcame adversity, and the journey behind his revolutionary music.

Review: I remember discovering Bob Marley in college and being blown away at the amount of passion he put into his music. Those on the outside may have just minimalized him to simply being a reggae pot smoker, but he was so much more than that. His message of peace through unity always stuck in this hippie’s mind. So I’ve always felt Bob would be a fantastic subject for a big-budget musical biopic. Unfortunately, I’m not sure I’m any closer to knowing the man than I was before sitting down in the theater.

Bob Marley: One Love follows Marley through one of the biggest times of his life: the creation of Exodus and his unity concert(s) in Jamaica. The film does a good job of showing just...

Movie Review: Bob Marley: One Love
Image
The latest narrative film about a musician – Bob Marley: One Love – ultimately plays out more as a celebration of Bob Marley than as a “warts-and-all” biography; and that is to the film’s benefit.

Whereas the film could have become burdened by monotonously moving through Marley’s life from one pivotal moment to the next, it instead bounces around the singer’s story in a whimsical, often spiritual way that enables his saga to take on a more grandiose aura than might have been expected otherwise.

Bob Marley: One Love begins with Marley and his band prepping for a free concert in Jamaica. However, when threats of violence against the singer should he perform put his health and well-being at risk, the actual performance is cut short, and the rest of the film begins to play out. What follows is an inspiring story of the singer’s triumph over numerous...

‘Bob Marley: One Love’ Gives Us a Reggae Icon Minus the Rebel Soul
Image
In 1976, Bob Marley was the most famous person in Jamaica. He was also a marked man. The star had agreed to play a free concert dubbed “Smile Jamaica.” He’d even written a theme song for the event. Though the show was conceived as a way to quell the rising tide of violence over the island nation’s precarious political state, Marley’s involvement made many think that it was his way of tacitly endorsing the People’s National Party over the more conservative Jamaica Labour Party. Two days before the concert,...

‘Bob Marley: One Love’ Review: This Bob Marley Biopic Fails to Get Up, Stand Up for Its Existence
Image
In the years since his premature death, reggae legend Bob Marley has been culturally defanged into a benevolent good-times symbol safe for dorm rooms and yuppie living rooms everywhere. Marley’s string of popular songs, many of which were compiled in his posthumous greatest hits collection “Legend,” turned him into one of the best-selling artists in the world, but this mass-market commercial appeal also necessitated a dilution of his radicalism and spiritual essence. Though many can probably identify “Jamming” or “Is This Love?” as a Marley tune if it was played for them, he’s still probably associated more with generic weed culture than any type of revolution, which is an obvious shame given the political roots of reggae and Jamaica’s storied history.

It makes some kind of sense that “Bob Marley: One Love” is being released at this time of heightened political consciousness. Granted, most contemporary music biopics...

‘Bob Marley: One Love’: Inside the Making of the Bob Marley Biopic
Image
Filming a scene as the title mystic in Bob Marley: One Love, Kingsley Ben-Adir was striding across a room in Jamaica when he heard, “Cut!” Marley’s son Ziggy, who was on set, had some input: He told the actor that his father wouldn’t have walked that particular way. “He was going up the stairs,” Marley says, “and I tell him, ‘Listen! When Bob walks, he takes two steps at a time.’ ”

Months later, in New York, Ben-Adir re-creates the revised move, his knees almost coming up to his chin.

Lashana Lynch Addresses MCU Future After The Marvels X-Men Post-Credits Scene
Image
Lashana Lynch's surprise appearance in The Marvels post-credits scene sets her up as part of the X-Men, but she doesn't know what it means for her future in the franchise. Lynch has no idea when she will make her next Marvel appearance and didn't even have a script for her role in The Marvels. The integration of the X-Men into the MCU has posed questions about Lynch's character and whether she exists in the same universe as the previous X-Men films.

Lashana Lynch made an unexpected return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe with an appearance in The Marvels’ post-credits scene. Having already made appearances as Maria Rambeau in Captain Marvel, and as a variant of Captain Marvel in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the actress’ latest appearance as Binary now sets her up as part of the X-Men. “Do you think people really want that? Do you think people are ready for that? I signed up for one movie. I did one, I literally don’t know anything about the next one. I’ve not had a conversation. So yeah… it’s in their hands. It’s in the franchise’s hands,” Lynch told Entertainment Tonight when asked about her chances of becoming Bond.
