The nominations for the 72nd Annual Mpse Golden Reel Awards, honoring outstanding achievement in sound editing, sound design, music editing and foley artistry in film, television and gaming were announced on Monday.. Winners will be announced at the annual gala on February 23, 2025 at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre in Los Angeles. Please find a full list of nominations below.

As previously announced, two honorary awards will also be presented at the gala: Kevin Costner will receive the Filmmaker Award and supervising sound editor Greg Hedgepath, Mpse will receive the Career Achievement Award. Patton Oswalt will serve as the host of the ceremony.

Now in its 72nd year, the Golden Reels honor outstanding achievement in sound editing, sound design, music editing and foley artistry in 20 categories spanning film, television and video games. Winners will be announced February 23 at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre in Los Angeles.

Last year’s top Golden Reel film honors went to Oppenheimer, Maestro, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and Society of the Snow.

Founded in 1953, the Motion Picture Sound Editors is a nonprofit group of professional sound and music editors who work in the motion picture, TV and gaming industries. Here are the nominees for its 2025 Golden Reel Awards:

The Motion Picture Sound Editors (Mpse) have announced the nominations for the 72nd Annual Mpse Golden Reel Awards, honoring outstanding achievement in sound editing, sound design, music editing, and foley artistry in film, television, and video games. While more casual moviegoers (and fans of “The Thrilling Adventure Hour” bits) can easily recognize the creative wizardry in physically producing sound effects via foley, every part of the sound process is crucial to making us feel the physical and emotional reality of the films and shows we watch.

The nominees are very much in line with the frontrunners for the 2025 Best Sound Oscars. The “Dune: Part Two” team was recognized for dialogue editing/Adr, effects/foley, and music editing, as was “Deadpool & Wolverine,” with “Alien: Romulus,” “Wicked,” and “Emilia Pérez” all scoring nominations in feature sound categories as well.

On the television side, there’s a pleasant mix of action-packed juggernauts...

Denis Villeneuve‘s Dune: Part Two and Shawn Levy‘s Deadpool & Wolverine tie for the lead number of feature nominations for the 72nd Motion Picture Sound Editors Golden Reel Awards with three nods each in the categories of dialogue/Adr, effects/foley and music.

Following behind with two nominations each are Alien: Romulus (dialogue/Adr and effects/foley), A Complete Unknown (dialogue/Adr and music), Emilia Pérez (international and music) and Wicked (dialogue/Adr and music).

All six films have been shortlisted for the Oscar in sound, as has The Wild Robot, which received an Mpse Golden Reel nomination in the feature animation category. Blitz, Gladiator II and Joker: Folie à Deux, which have also been shortlisted, did not receive a Golden Reel nom.
