It’s 1856, and in the historic coal mines of Northern France, a group of miners find themselves trapped in the subterranean depths after a cave-in. But they soon realise they are not alone… Decades later, veteran miner Roland is forced by management to accompany Professor Berthier underground to take samples and measurements. A sudden landslide prevents them from surfacing, and they, too, must face the ancient mutant that constantly craves blood.
Miners in 50s France come face to face with a monstrous disciple of The Old One, which has recently been a major trope in horror cinema – it seems whilst the work of Lovecraft is unfilmable, homaging it is not. We’ve had films like The Deep Ones, The Old Ones, The Lighthouse et al and now this...

Up next from French filmmaker Mathieu Turi is The Deep Dark, which looks to be headed to theaters in France beginning on November 29, 2023.
We don’t yet have any idea when the film will be released here in the United States, but a French trailer for The Deep Dark has surfaced this week. You can check it out below.
The Deep Dark is said to have “Lovecraft vibes,” and the end of the trailer teases some kind of skeletal creature. My Bloody Valentine meets Lovecraftian creature feature? We like it.
The film is set in 1956, in the north of France…
“A band of underground miners is forced to lead a professor to take samples a thousand meters underground. After a landslide prevents them from going back up, they discover a crypt from another time, and unknowingly wake up something that should have remained asleep.”

Having cleared his name, genius mechanic Lino has only one goal in mind: getting revenge on the corrupt cops who killed his brother and his mentor.
Movie Review Lost Bullet 2 (2022)
It carries the same style of the first movie, though it is darker, from the very start, and strives to become a thriller in its purest form – not making allowances for deep characterizations nor providing a thorough background to the story. "What do you want?" "For him to pay!" Netflix has launched the full-length official trailer for Lost Bullet 2: Back for More, a "high octane" sequel to the French film Lost Bullet from 2020. That one has been on Netflix since 2020 and is one of the underrated gems that is worth a watch if you enjoy action movies. Lino is a car savant-turned-police officer with a need for speed. Determined to find the murderers of his brother and his mentor, Lino continues his hunt and won't let anyone – or anything – get in his way. Lost Bullet 2 is the exciting sequel to the 2020 French action thriller that "wastes nothing in its quest to deliver the goods." Starring Alban Lenoir, Diego Martín, Pascale Arbillot, and Stéfi Celma. This looks dope!! It doesn't seem as polished as the Fast & Furious films, but does have that same energetic streets-on-fire vibe. Enjoy. ›››

Ahead of the premiere of Elite Season 6, the official social media accounts for the Netflix hit confirmed Tuesday that the show has been renewed for a seventh season.
Netflix shows rarely make it past their first few seasons, so Elite will be joining the likes of Orange is the New Black as one of the longest-running shows on the service.
Netflix has not confirmed the renewal, but given that the social media channel for the show has confirmed the cast of Elite Season 7, it's about as official as we'll get.
The most shocking part of the announcement is the news that Omar Ayuso, who played Omar Shanaa for the first five seasons, is returning.
No details have been revealed about what brings him back into the fold, but it's possible we might get some answers on Elite Season 6 (premiering November 18).
Additionally, it sounds like we're getting another major revamp for Elite Season 7.

The long-delayed fourth season of the private-school drama will land on the streaming service Friday, June 18.
An episode order has not been revealed, but it is expected to be in line with the previous three seasons, which spanned eight episodes apiece.
The premiere date means fans will have been waiting 15 months between seasons, but the long delay is due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Elite Season 4 production was forced to shut down, but it resumed a few months ago, and with work on the season has now been completed, production on Elite Season 5 has already commenced.

The trials and tribulations of the students at Las Encinas will continue to be charted at Netflix.
The streamer on Thursday officially ordered a fifth season of the Spanish-language drama Elite, well in advance of its Season 4 premiere.
Netflix made the announcement on Twitter, but Deadline revealed that the fifth season will also bring another two new cast members into the fold in Argentinian actress Valentina Zenere (Cable Girls) and Brazilian actor André Lamoglia (Juacas), but no character details were revealed.
Elite typically likes to keep viewers in suspense when new additions are announced due to the nature of the series.
Each season follows a new mystery in a similar vein to Big Little Lies, with the characters being quizzed by the police about the events.
Elite was renewed for Season 4 in May last year, but production was scuppered due to the Covid-19 pandemic, with the series finishing filming much later than originally planned.

Itzan Escamilla, Miguel Bernardeau, Arón Piper, Omar Ayuso, Claudia Salas and Georgina Amorós will appear in Season 4, while new cast includes Andrés Velencoso, Manu Rios, Carla Díaz, Martina Cariddi, Pol Granch, and Diego Martín.

Their characters will cross paths with Guzmán (Miguel Bernardeau), Samuel (Itzan Escamilla), Ander (Arón Piper), Omar (Omar Ayuso), Rebeca (Claudia Salas), and Cayetana (Georgina Amorós).
To celebrate the new additions, Netflix has also unveiled the first cast photo, and as previously reported, several stars from the first three seasons are nowhere in sight.

First presented to buyers at the Toronto Film Festival, “If I Were a Rich Man” follows Santi, who, among other problems, is about to divorce his wife. Then he wins the lottery jackpot: €25 million ($27.5 million). The question is: how can he avoid sharing his fortune with his ex?

The reception is being held at a beautiful old stately home in the middle of the countryside. Everything appears to be running smoothly and the bride and groom and their families are enjoying a wonderful day; that is until some of the guests start showing signs of a strange illness. [Rec]³ Génesis
Directed by Paco Plaza
Written by Paco Plaza, Luiso Berdejo and David Gallart
Spain, 2012
The first [Rec] was a haunting and sinister horror film that ended on an intended note of malevolent ambiguity. [Rec] ², for better or worse, tried to elucidate the questions posed in the first. In [Rec]³ Génesis, however, it feels like the franchise was hijacked by misguided works of fan fiction, by people who loved the two previous chapters, but who fundamentally misunderstood why they were so effective. As a result, [Rec]³ is a film that forges a misbegotten identity of its own by categorically burning the bridges with its predecessors, betraying the very reason why we gave a damn about the third installment in the first place.
Génesis takes place a few hours before the events of one and two, at a wedding between Spanish couple Clara (Leticia Dolera) and Koldo (Diego Martín). Unbeknownst to them, one of the guests,...

Title: [Rec]³ Génesis Directed By: Paco Plaza Starring: Leticia Dolera, Diego Martín, Àlex Monner, Emilio Mencheta, Ismael Martínez, Claire Baschet It’s hard to believe that with the amount of saturation of found footage movies flooding our theaters in recent years, that there was a time when the filmmaking style was something to be considered “unique”. We all have The Blair Witch Project to blame/thank for that resurgence when it was released in 1999, but another recent example would be the claustrophobic zombie-esque movie [Rec] from Spain. If you’re thinking that a group of people quarantined inside a building by the military in a found footage style is gimmicky, you might [ Read More ]...

Title: [Rec] 3 Genesis Directed By: Paco Plaza Starring: Leticia Dolera, Diego Martín, Àlex Monner, Emilio Mencheta, Ismael Martínez, Claire Baschet I’m all for trying something new, but when you’ve got a film franchise like “Rec,” certain expectations must be met. Perhaps his fictional virus finally got to him because the fact that writer-director Paco Plaza thinks he can suddenly do away with found footage and horror in the third installment is downright bizarre. It’s Clara and Koldo’s (Leticia Dolera and Diego Martín) big day and their family and friends have all come out to see them get married. All is well until Uncle Victor (Emilio Mencheta) starts feeling under [ Read More ]...

When zombies first shuffled onto the screen in George Romero’s Night of the Living Dead, it was left unclear just how the dead came to rise again. Many theories were tossed about in that film and its sequels, among them a passing comet, biological weapons, and the coming of the apocalypse, but nothing ever really stuck. Within the past decade or so, faster, deadlier, more evolved brain eaters entered the pop culture spectrum, most notably in the Dawn of the Dead remake. However, as horror fans heralded a new breed of zombie, filmmakers were quick to distance their creations from Romero’s ghouls – Danny Boyle emerged as the biggest protester, insisting that the monsters in his film 28 Days Later were not zombies, but “infected.”
But what determines a zombie? Do their origins, speed, and motivations for killing really matter in the already vague scheme of things? Or do we...

The Myth Of The American Sleepover (15)
(David Robert Mitchell, 2010, Us) Claire Sloma, Amanda Bauer, Marlon Morton, Matt Jacobsen. 96 mins
As low-key as it is low-budget, this is a thing of beauty. The plot is basically Dazed And Confused relocated to Michigan: high-schoolers (including a flirt with the hots for a pool-cleaner and a drop-out pining for the girl of his dreams) make the most of one last hurrah. But the film's mood is all its own, characterised by an elegiac score, easygoing performances and gorgeous cinematography.
Berberian Sound Studio (15)
(Peter Strickland, 2012, UK) Toby Jones, Tonia Sotiropoulou, Cosimo Fusco. 92 mins
There's something nasty in the recording studio. A sound engineer supplies the effects for an Italian horror movie, but the creepiness doesn't stay confined to the screen for long.
[Rec]3 Genesis (18)

[Rec]3 Genesis
Stars: Leticia Dolera, Diego Martín, Javier Botet, Àlex Monner, Ismael Martínez, Borja Glez. Santaolalla, Mireia Ros | Written by Paco Plaza, Luiso Berdejo | Directed by Paco Plaza
Going it solo for the third film in the series, Paco Plaza helms what is, by far, a much stronger film than [Rec]2 and a film that not only changes the game for the franchise, abandoning as it does the “found-footage” perspective on proceedings, but also expands the mythos and the scope of the series, throwing religion much more to the fore in a way that takes the series, and the traditional zombie film, to whole new levels. The film is also, at its core, a love story. Yes, I did say love story.

Co-directors Paco Plaza and Jaume Balagueró first made their mark with [Rec] back in 2007, the first in one of the most well-known horror franchises outside of Hollywood in recent years.
Plaza returns behind the camera for the latest instalment, [Rec] 3: Genesis, before Balagueró brings us the follow-up, [Rec] 4: Apocalypse, expected sometime next year.
We caught a brilliant new trailer for the film back in March ahead of its Spanish debut, and now a great new clip has made its way online over at Yahoo Movies, in promotion of its VoD debut in the Us last Friday.
“The original [Rec] crew are back, ready to submit their ensemble cast to another fight for survival against the zombie infection. This time to the backdrop of an original soundtrack. The new chapter will see the film “open up” by using a more traditional cinematographic style. However, the film’s roots have not been forgotten, and...

Rec 3: Genesis (2012) If you were expecting the claustrophobic terror of the first two “Rec” movies, then you’ll be sorely disappointed with Paco Plaza’s “Rec 3: Genesis”, a decidedly campier (not to mention a whole lot roomier) affair than previous entries in the franchise. The third film also marks Plaza’s first solo effort after co-writing/co-directing/co-producing the first two movies with Jaume Balagueo. The film opens in Found Footage style, documenting the impending nuptials of Clara (Leticia Dolera) and Koldo (Diego Martín). The marriage goes off without a hitch, but things take a bloody turn later at the wedding reception, where an uncle claiming to have been bitten by a dog earlier in the day turns zombie and begins feasting on poor Clara and Koldo’s relatives. Talk about a memorable wedding! I guess they’ll be talking about this one for a while. Well, the one that survives,...

Till’ death do us part…
When I first stumbled upon Rec back in 2007, it was love at first bite. Directors Jaume Balagueró and Paco Plaza not only revolutionized found footage zombie films, even putting undead legend George A. Romero to shame (looking at you Diary of the Dead), but they followed the film up with an even more enthralling sequel.
Rec 2 is to Rec what The Godfather: Part II is to The Godfather, building on perfection to a level that seemed unattainable. I’ve never watched a horror franchise conjure such an engrossing and mysterious story while also delivering legitimate horror scares, all surrounded with a frenzied survivalist energy. Yes, the Rec movies hold a special place in this horror lover’s collection.
Continuing the terrifying trajectory of my beloved Rec franchise, Balagueró and Plaza decided to split directing the last two planned Rec films amongst each other. No longer would the collaborators pool ideas,...

With [Rec] 3: Genesis set to be released stateside next week, we’re starting to hear a little bit more about the next sequel. During a recent interview with [Rec] 3 director Paco Plaza, it was revealed that [Rec] 4: Apocalypse would not be a found footage film.
Via Bd: “It’s true that it takes place after ‘[Rec] 2′. And it is going to be shot [differently]. It is not going back to found footage, it is going to be a cinematic narrative. A conventional film. I don’t want to say much more, I can’t say too much. I don’t want to get in trouble!”
It may have changed a bit since the original report, but here is the synopsis from [Rec] 4: Apocalypse we reported on in January:

To paraphrase the opening of Roger Ebert’s uncharitable review of the original Halloween II, it’s sad to watch a fall from greatness. That’s what we get in [Rec] 3.
When the original [Rec] came out in 2007, it was an instant classic of the zombie subgenre and another example that our best horror movies were being made outside the U.S. Then, by the grace of the smiling movie gods, 2009’s [Rec] 2 actually managed to top it, picking up just minutes after the first film ended and taking an already terrifying story into an entirely new direction while not betraying the scares and intelligence of its predecessor. The latest installment takes the key elements that made those first two so great and rejects them like a bad kidney, quickly devolving into something painfully bland and boring.

If you’re anticipating the third installment of Paco Plaza’s highly praised [Rec] series, this brand new red-band trailer should certainly sate the appetite, at least for the time being. This piece of footage showcases some bloody wedding festivities, and while I’m not sure it’s worthy of an official “red band” tag, it’s still awfully entertaining!
