English character actor, on the classical stage from 1947. Noted especially for his interpretations of Falstaff, Julius Caesar and Wolsey. Long tenure with the Royal Shakespeare Company. Died as the result of a fall, while playing the title role in "Richard II" on August 14th 1987.
