By the time he died at 59 on October 2, 1985 as the most famous early casualty of the AIDS crisis, Rock Hudson had unwittingly become more than just a tragic victim of a horrible disease; he was also one of the first star actors of his generation to be outed as gay. It was something he zealously guarded by necessity in order to remain a star. It’s at the center of the HBO/Max film documentary “Rock Hudson: All That Heaven Allowed,” which paints a fascinating but bittersweet portrait of the film icon’s life in the closet. “It goes back to the ethics of the day,” believes the film’s director Stephen Kijak (pronounced “Kayak”). “One didn’t speak of those things.” But a code of silence also helped Hudson keep his secret across decades. “There was such goodwill around him,” he adds. “He was notoriously the nicest man in Hollywood.

Fall festival premiere “Wildcat,” a reimagining of famed author Flannery O’Connor process writing her first novel, is even more of a family affair than originally advertised.
While the film, currently seeking distribution after premiering at both Telluride and TIFF, was executive produced by star Maya Hawke, co-written and directed by her father Ethan Hawke, and produced by his wife Ryan Hawke, actress Laura Linney, who plays O’Connor’s mother (among other roles) was the final piece of the puzzle that allowed them to produce the imaginative project.
“There are few people in the world who, if they ask you to do something, they whisper and you show up. And Ethan is just one of those people, for me,” said Linney during a recent interview with IndieWire. (The cast of “Wildcat” received a SAG-AFTRA interim agreement to promote the film amid the ongoing strike.) She recalled when they worked together early in her career,...

The late Robin Williams had the incredible and unmatched ability to make people laugh. His volcanic energy, genius delivery, and rapid impressions made him a household name. Williams’ immense success in the 1990s eventually opened the door for more serious films, including the tender Good Will Hunting and the fantastical What Dreams May Come. Not everything that came after was as well received or recognized, but Williams continued to pursue other genres outside of comedy. The actor had his fair share of dramatic performances to complement his comedic ones, but it was Williams’ sinister turn in 2002’s One Hour Photo that caught everyone off guard. No one was expecting Mrs. Doubtfire or Aladdin’s genie to star in such an unsettling psychological-thriller.
Sy the Photo Guy remains a defining character in Williams’ career, even after playing another villain in Insomnia that same year. However, to outright label the chronically lonely...

This review of “Fire Island” was first published on May 23, 2022.
Jane Austen is cited just seconds into “Fire Island” — and a character later quotes everyone’s favorite “Emma” adaptation, “Clueless” — and this sparkling tale of star-crossed love affairs on a beach vacation treats “romantic” and “comedy” with equal importance. The fact that its entanglements, misunderstandings, and reconciliations occur among an almost entirely all-male cast serves merely to put a new meaning to the “Pride” in “Pride and Prejudice.”
First-time screenwriter Joel Kim Booster establishes a world in which smartphones and written correspondence can co-exist and where two unlikely partners can find each other by virtue of being the only two people for miles around who want to talk about literature. For all the hook-up apps, Charli Xcx remixes, and six-pack abs on display, “Fire Island” is still the kind of movie where arguing about the short fiction of Alice Munro counts as foreplay.

When showrunner Lauren Morelli put out a call to agencies for queer writers for Tales of the City, she was surprised by the response. Morelli was looking to make the writers room for the Netflix limited series — which is adapted from Armistead Maupin’s books about a community of Lgbtq+ people living in San Francisco — as diverse as the cast, but it was harder than she thought it would be.
“Even when you ask agencies for queer writers, I was really amazed that the majority of what I received was all male and white and cis,” Morelli tells The ...

The world has changed significantly since Mary Ann Singleton first walked up to 28 Barbary Lane in Armistead Maupin’s Tales of the City. The books, which begin in1976, have spawned a television series (in 1993, with later seasons in 1998 and 2001) to a musical adaptation and radio shows, and are beloved by fans around the world. However, when Netflix came in to update and continue the story about an Lgbtq+ community living in San Francisco, a changing world had emerged that required new characters.

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched “Armistead Maupin’s Tales Of The City,” streaming now on Netflix.
Certain parameters for the new limited series version of Armistead Maupin’s “Tales of the City” were already set when showrunner Lauren Morelli joined the project — most notably the fact that Mary Ann Singleton (Laura Linney) would be returning to 28 Barbary Lane for Anna Madrigal’s (Olympia Dukakis) 90th birthday, which Morelli calls “a really amazing log line.” From there, though, Morelli had reign to bring the story forward for the modern audience, as well as to create a new mystery around Anna’s past — a mystery, she says, that “almost killed” her writers.
“The writers’ room board looked like we were serial killers,” Morelli tells Variety. “It was elaborate graphs of, ‘What does the audience know, and what do they need to know, and what do we withhold?...

When Armistead Maupin began writing Tales of the City — his serialized, sudsy stories about life in San Francisco in the late Seventies — the central character was a very naive, very straight Midwestern girl, Mary Ann Singleton. Mary Ann served as a point-of-entry figure for readers unversed in queer fiction, just as Laura Linney’s portrayal of Mary Ann did the same in 1993’s acclaimed PBS adaptation of the first Tales book. (Two additional miniseries were produced for Showtime over the next decade, with diminishing returns.)

Few fictional worlds have so meaningfully impacted the lives of Lgbtq Americans as Armistead Maupin’s “Tales of the City.” First serialized as a column in the San Francisco Chronicle, then produced as a groundbreaking 1993 PBS series, Maupin’s saga of a tight-knit Lgbtq community quartered at 28 Barbary Lane, home to Mary Ann Singleton and Anna Madrigal, was an early and beloved bellwether for contemporary queer life.
The television series returns this month in a 10-part Netflix reboot, and at Monday night’s New York City premiere, the series’ cast and creatives marked “Tales” as a triumph not just for the cherished characters of Barbary Lane, but for the Lgbtq writers and artists who conceived the sequel.
“To have an all-queer writers’ room, a group where nobody had to explain things, where the things that have all been in our heads, the experiences that we’ve all had growing up...

1. “Black Mirror” Season 5 (available June 5)
Why Should I Watch? At this point, what choice do you have? Between its mind-bending sci-fi stories, topicality, and aggressive advancement of the medium itself, new episodes of “Black Mirror” always dominant TV discussion for a few weeks a year. If you want to stay current with the culture (and can handle the darkness), you pretty much have to watch.
Creator Charlie Brooker’s latest season is a bit shorter than previous entires — “Bandersnatch” took up a lot of time, you guys — but the three episodes are getting a prime spotlight on Netflix: They’ve each got their own trailers, stars, and synopses, all of which you can see here. Just remember: It’s called “Black Mirror” for a reason. These are all bound to pretty… bleak.
Bonus Reason: In “Rachel, Jack and Ashley, Too” (Episode 3), Miley Cyrus plays a pop star named Ashley...

“Escape at Dannemora” is the current frontrunner to take home the Best Limited Series Emmy, which would not only be a huge coup for Ben Stiller & Co., but would be a landmark win for Showtime as the network has never won the category before.
Showtime only has a mere six nominations in the category, which through various times over the years has been merged with and split from the Best TV Movie category. For comparison, NBC and PBS have a record 10 wins each. Last year, Showtime’s bid for “Patrick Melrose” marked the network’s first nomination in the category since “Sleeper Cell” 12 years prior. Its other nominations were for “Paris Trout”, “Hiroshima” (1996), “Armistead Maupin’s More Tales of the City” (1998) and “Armistead Maupin’s Further Tales of the City” (2001).

In addition to filming the third season of the Netflix crime drama Ozark, it seems Laura Linney made time to star in another drama for the streaming platform: Tales of the City.
The limited series is inspired by the books of the same name by American writer Armistead Maupin, who set his novels in San Francisco. That's where we meet Mary Ann (Linney), who returns to the California city to reunite with her daughter Shawna (Ellen Page) and ex-husband Brian (Paul Gross), 20 years after she left them to pursue her career. In Netflix's description of the series, Mary Ann is "fleeing the midlife crisis that her picture-perfect Connecticut life created" and finds herself "quickly drawn back into the orbit of Anna Madrigal (Olympia Dukakis), her chosen family, and a new generation of queer young residents living at 28 Barbary Lane."
