Works of dark fantasy that border on being considered horror movies are a vital part of the genre. Not only are these films thrilling and exciting to watch, but they also tackle taboo subjects and deal with the more complex and murky aspects of the human experience. Filmmakers must grapple with the grotesque and violent as much as they do the happy and magical parts of fantasy. Using the genre solely as a means of escapism is a failure, as fantasy and other works of speculative fiction have the opportunity to take on some of the biggest issues facing society.

For those missing the Six of Crows crew, Lisa Maxwell's The Last Magician series is the perfect follow-up with a thrilling heist plot. The Last Magician offers a similar criminal underworld vibe, lovable gangs, and magical heists that will appeal to Six of Crows fans. Maxwell's series has the advantage of four lengthy books, allowing readers to dive into the story for a longer period compared to Bardugo's duology.
Leigh Bardugo's Six of Crows duology is a tough act to follow, but fantasy fans will be thrilled to know the perfect replacement book series debuted seven years ago. The first Six of Crows book hit shelves back in 2015, expanding on Bardugo's world from the Shadow and Bone trilogy. This time, the story focused on a group of characters from the Grishaverse's criminal underworld, following them as they embarked on a seemingly impossible heist. While Six of Crows...

The New York Times reports that he passed away at 88 years old due to cardiopulmonary arrest, according to his wife, Lisa Maxwell. Newall searched for a musician to make it happen, eventually finding Bob Dorough, who quickly wrote “Three Is The Magic Number.

Denise Welch has hit out at Myleene Klass over comments she made about Loose Women.
Welch - who quit the ITV talk show in October last year following a row with producers over changes to the programme - took to Twitter to say how disappointed she was in Klass, who claimed the show was previously "too ranty and misogynistic" before she joined in January.
Klass had told the Daily Mail: "I love Loose Women. It's nice to be able to articulate and get things out there. But I feel it was getting a bit misogynistic, a bit post-menopausal or pre-menopausal and ranty.
"That's not how women should be represented so it's nice they've refreshed the panel and we can talk about politics, fashion designers and what else is going on in the week."
After reading the comments, Welch tweeted: "Disappointed @KlassMyleene @McGiff. Sadly ratings suggest most viewers don't agree with you.

As a native New Yorker turned Londoner there is nothing I delight in more than getting the chance to be transported to an apartment in the Bronx for a couple of hours with some colourful and desperate characters. The references to the Whitestone bridge, the Grand Concourse, and the 95 in “Chicken” by new playwright, Mike Batistick, made me giggle with a tinge of nostalgia for home.
This Bronx tale tells the story of two mates who grew up in an orphanage together so they’re like practically “brothas” ( insert your best Bronx accent here). In last night's episode of the show, celebrity hairdresser Nicky Clarke was eliminated from the competition after picking up five votes from his fellow contestants. Thompson and Maxwell have now alleged that some of the other stars rigged the vote to save Sean Maguire. "The rules said no discussion of eviction," Thompson told Digital Spy. "I said, 'Are the red team psychic?' They suddenly all chose Nicky to protect Sean, it was obvious." Maxwell added: "Nicky had only ever been lovely all the way (more)...

Lisa Maxwell has revealed that she very nearly took the role of Stella Price on Coronation Street. The Loose Women star was rumoured to have auditioned for the role back in April, before it was announced that Michelle Collins had won the part. Maxwell told The People that the offer to appear behind the bar at the Rovers Return was too good to resist. "I have turned down other things but the chance of being on Corrie was too good an opportunity to miss. When I first started acting my grandparents said to me, 'You know you've made it when you're landlady of the Rovers'. So I couldn't really not go for it! I had to do it for them. "I had an audition and a screen test, I even filmed scenes behind the bar of the Rovers. The decision was made by several different people and I know some...

The stars of Loose Women are said to be "threatening a mutiny" after Kate Thornton and Zoe Tyler were axed from the show. The remaining panel members, including Lynda Bellingham, Carol McGiffin, Andrea McLean and Lisa Maxwell, are "furious" that producers didn't consult them about the pair's replacements and have threatened to reduce the number of days they work unless they're given more say, the Sunday Mirror reports. Carol Vorderman and former Coronation Street actress Sally Lindsay will apparently replace the axed duo and are expected to sign contracts for the ITV1 show next week. "All the girls were pretty peeved about the way in which Kate and (more)...

Lisa Maxwell has admitted how the "dirty secret" surrounding her paternity affected her life. In her new autobiography Not That Kinda Girl, the actress and Loose Women panellist discussed how she eventually tracked down her father, after just ten minutes searching online. Maxwell's mother Val fell pregnant at 22, to a married man whose wife was already expecting a child. Her birth certificate read 'Father unknown', as his identity was kept quiet. "My birth was something family and friends whispered about. A child born out of wedlock was something to be ashamed of then, the subject of gossip and innuendo - a stain on the family," Maxwell wrote, as extracts published in The Mirror reveal. "I was aware of that from the beginning but it was something I couldn't talk about... a dirty secret." She confessed: "So (more)...

Darren Gough has busted his jaw after accidentally headbutting Ray Quinn on Sing If You Can.
The cricket star was competing against the former X Factor runner up on ITV’s Sing If You Can when the accident happened.
Darren was trying to balance on a fast spinning giant inflatable record, while trying to sing the whole time. He toppled off, fell to the right and bounced off his team-mate who was waiting by the sidelines.
A source told The Sun:
“It was nearing the end of the show when Darren was trying to stay on the record for as long as possible.
“He was doing really well and the wheel was going pretty fast. But then he lost his footing and went hurtling off the side, right where Ray – his team-mate – was standing.
“He gave him an almighty headbutt, smashing his jaw into Ray’s head. He thought he...

We start the Top 7. You finish the Top 10.
Sometimes, an alien teen has to learn to make his way on Earth. Other times, they have very human problems while still on their home planet. Whether he wants to just fit in or she wants to see the world, alien teens are just like the terrestrial variety. This weekend’s I Am Number Four tries to show us, once again, just how hard it can be to be an alien teen. You have to get good grades in school and run away from a killer trying to track you down. Below are some of my favorites.
7. Lem from Planet 51 (2009)
Recap: Lem (voiced by Justin Long) is just a geeky alien teen trying to get noticed by the girl next door, Neera (voiced by Jessica Biel).Until the day that a strange alien from Earth (voiced by Dwayne Johnson) lands in...

Jason Gardiner’s altercation with Karen Barber seems to have become the topic of the day.
The Dancing On Ice row was discussed in depth on ITV’s This Morning just a few hours ago and now the Loose Women have been sharing their opinions on the upset.
The Australian judge had hit out at head coach Karen Barber, after she questioned his critique of Johnson Beharry’s routine. After she told him he was being unnecessarily harsh about the war hero, Gardiner replied:
‘Karen if your opinion mattered, you’d still be on the panel.’
Former Bill actress Lisa Maxwell and current Loose Women panellist Lisa Maxwell supported Jason saying that people would have been upset no matter what he said about Johnson. She said:
In all honesty, with the comment that he made about her not being on the panel, it was backstage politics and it should have stayed there.

Katy Brand and Rufus Hound have been voted into the final of this year’s Let’s Dance For Sports Relief.
The comedy based show returned to our screens tonight and delivered some hilarious performances from stand up comedians, actors and sports personalities.
We have a full run down of tonight’s show here and there is no doubt that Katy Brand’s routine to Beyonce’s ‘Single Ladies’ and Rufus Hound’s ‘Fight For This Love’ stole the show for us.
Rufus looked amazing in his full military regalia and as Jason Manford said:
‘If it wasn’t for the beard….I so would!’
Katy looked amazing in her skintight black leotard and proved that she really should wear a bit more slap in future. She looked smoking hot tonight and she pulled off some fabulous moves and butt slapping action.
Who were you rooting for tonight and do...

So we’re getting ready now for a busy showbiz day! In a few hours we’ll be heading to The Hammersmith Apollo for an exclusive Jls gig, then straight to to BBC Television Centre to watch the live final of So You Think You Can Dance.
This week’s final has been thrown into turmoil after Robbie White pulled out due to a dislocated shoulder, Alastair Postlethwaite stepped in and then pulled out also, after deciding that he couldn’t learn six routines in a few days.
So tonight’s show will be a battle between Tommy Franzén, Lizzie Gough and Charlie Bruce. We think Tommy will take the title, though we wouldn’t mind too much if Charlie won instead. We’ll be liveblogging the final right here, so join us tonight to hear our take on the performances and judges comments. In the meantime feel free to...

The Bill star Lisa Maxwell has admitted that she suffered two miscarriages last year. Speaking on The Paul O'Grady Show, the actress confirmed that the ordeal contributed to her decision to quit playing Di Sam Nixon after seven years on the ITV1 police drama. "I'll be absolutely honest with you, I had two miscarriages - one in January and one in July," Maxwell, 45, explained. "It was a really sad time for me and now I don't mind talking about it. It's not like a secret. In some ways I feel the more I talk about it, the better it is - because I kept it a secret at the time." Confirming that she returned to work shortly after the first baby loss, the star continued: "In some ways I think it was easier to be Sam than be Lisa. [I was] facing up to a lot of stuff (more)...
