Two experimental films executive produced by Steven Soderbergh — Eddie Alcazar’s Divinity and Godfrey Reggio’s Once Within a Time – join Neon’s anticipated Cannes Palme d’Or winner Anatomy of a Fall in theaters today, a bit of counterprogramming on a weekend dominated by Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour.
Divinity, about a dark and creepy future populated by bodybuilders hooked on an elixir for eternal life, “was always made for the theater,” said Alcazar. “But it’s kind of a roll of the dice of what a distributor wants to do with it.” Utopia, which acquired the black-and-white romp — set mostly in a mansion on a desert that looks like the moon — after its Sundance premiere (see Deadline review), opens Divinity at Regal Union Square in NYC, expanding to Los Angeles next week, with a national rollout on 11/3.
There will be opening-weekend Q&As with Alcazar, Soderbergh, star Stephen Dorff and DJ Muggs.

Munich-based sales agency Global Screen has acquired romantic drama “Falling Into Place” for worldwide theatrical distribution. The English-language film is written and directed by Aylin Tezel, one of Germany’s leading young actors, and stars Tezel (“7500”) and Chris Fulton (“Bridgerton”).
The directorial debut is set in Scotland on the Isle of Skye and in London. It is an honest and poetic portrait of today’s 30-somethings caught between the fear of commitment and the desire for self-improvement. Like all great love stories, it is not just about the love between two individuals, but also about the dreams and anxieties of a whole generation.
Kira and Ian, two 30-somethings, meet all too briefly over a winter weekend on the Isle of Skye and form a sudden, deep, and surprising bond. Back in London, they try to move on with their separate lives – but both have to stop running from themselves...

When I decided to review Not Another Happy Ending the reason for this was pretty obvious, as a Doctor Who fan I was interested in a movie where Karen Gillan took a lead role. As Amy she was arguably one of the most popular companions to The Doctor and with her moving onto Guardians of the Galaxy it looks like she has a huge future in the movie business. What I was interested in was how she could handle a role that required more acting than action, though to be fair she had her moments in Doctor Who with her Raggedy Man (fans will know who I mean).

The Fifth Estate (15)
(Bill Condon, 2013, Us/Bel) Benedict Cumberbatch, Daniel Brühl, David Thewlis, Laura Linney, Peter Capaldi. 128 mins
Cumberbatch was seemingly born to play Julian Assange, though this pacy hot-button-issue thriller struggles to make the Wikileaks story into another Social Network. There are some questionable cinematic flourishes (ooh, cyberspace!), but at the core is the bromance between Brühl's wide-eyed German techie (Daniel Berg) and the enigmatic Aussie – partners in a morally hazardous social justice crusade that climaxes with, er, the Guardian.
Le Week-end (15)
(Roger Michell, 2013, UK) Jim Broadbent, Lindsay Duncan, Jeff Goldblum. 93 mins
Before Midnight for seniors, as a 60-something couple's Parisian second honeymoon gives rise to bickering, regrets, and fears for the future, but youthful romantic comedy too. There's wit and wisdom in the writing and the seasoned performers are very good company.

★★☆☆☆ John McKay's Not Another Happy Ending (2013) is a breezy and harmless if ultimately forgettable romantic comedy set in and around the city of Glasgow. Jane (former Doctor Who star Karen Gillan), a struggling novelist, finds herself thrust into the limelight when her first novel, a memoir about the trails of her own family, becomes an overnight success. With her newfound status, her life sees improvement. Not only does she fall in love with screenwriter Willie (Henry Ian Cusick), but she also starts to reconnect with her estranged father. All this, however, has a negative effect on her ability to complete her sophomore novel.
Thus, Jane's loyal publisher Tom (Stanley Weber) and his assistant Roddy (Iain De Caestecker, in the film's funniest role) sets about to diminish this fresh wave of romantic positivity. Boasting a moderately good premise that both embraces and satirises the well-worn clichés of the rom-com genre,...

How far can a film go based solely on the performance of its star? Turns out a fair distance if Scottish rom-com Not Another Happy Ending is anything to go by. Doctor Who star Karen Gillan, in her first leading movie role, carries this film by the scruff of the neck with a quirky and well-measured performance as an up-and-coming novelist who's struggling to get the creative juices flowing on her second book.
Gillan plays Jane Lockhart, a woman who mined her turbulent upbringing (notably paternal abandonment) into a debut novel that shot her onto the literary A-list. Fame, awards and romance with Hollywood screenwriter Willie (Lost's Henry Ian Cusick) swiftly followed, but Jane's happiness proves to be her downfall. When she's content she can't write,...

Having arrived from Glasgow the night before, and fresh from an early morning cast and crew screening of his latest movie, John McKay was set for a day of interviews when we met him in Edinburgh’s Grassmarket.
The film in question, Not Another Happy Ending, was due to close the 67th Edinburgh International Film Festival the following night with a star-studded closing gala at the city’s Festival Theatre.
Shot primarily in Glasgow, McKay’s film tells the story of a writer struggling to complete her second novel. Literally haunted by her impatient heroine, Jane Lockhart (Karen Gillan) is desperate to escape the two-book contract with her publisher, as she is still smarting from his decision to change the title of her debut behind her back.
Conceived almost five years ago by David Solomons, the original script was passed on to John McKay by the agent they shared. Alongside...

Pixar’s Brave was always going to be a tough act to follow. It was high-profile and high-quality, pleasing promoters and audiences alike when it closed last year’s Edinburgh International Film Festival. Not Another Happy Ending, a relatively little-known and low-budget romantic-comedy shot in and around Glasgow, sadly cannot begin to compete.
Karen Gillan stars as Jane Lockhart, a novelist who finds overnight success in a fictionalised account of the tumultuous childhood she spent without a father. Jane, however, feels betrayed when her publisher, Tom Duvall (Stanley Weber), changes the title of her novel — The Endless Anguish Of My Father — to something a little more marketable. Having signed a two-book deal, she must get to work on her next manuscript before she can sever ties with Tom and sign with a new, more understanding publisher.

Not Another Happy Ending
Written by David Solomons
Directed by John McKay
UK, 2013
Set in a spruced-up Glasgow, Not Another Happy Ending is an offbeat romantic comedy starring Karen Gillan as Jane, a quirky young novelist struggling to overcome a nasty bout of writer’s block. With the editorial guidance of her passionate but single-minded publisher, Tom (Stanley Weber), her debut autobiographical novel became a huge bestseller, as well as reuniting her with her estranged father (Gary Lewis) and landing her a relationship with a renowned but narcissistic screenwriter, Willie (Henry Ian Cusick). Relying on Jane’s new book to rescue his ailing publishing company, Tom believes that her newfound happiness is preventing her from writing and sets out to make her life as miserable as he can.
The underhand methods he resorts to provide the impetus for the plot, chipping away at Jane’s vulnerabilities and gradually eroding her chirpy disposition.

The 67th Edinburgh International Film Festival kicks off this evening with the European premiere of Breathe In, Drake Doremus’ dark family drama starring Felicity Jones and Guy Pearce, and then continues for a further eleven days until it draws to a close with the world premiere of John McKay’s romantic comedy Not Another Happy Ending.
The programme, which has been lovingly put together by Artistic Director Chris Fujiwara and his trusted team, contains all the necessary ingredients to appease both die-hard cinema fans and those simply looking to catch the next big thing a few weeks before anyone else. To find the films worth seeing though is a tricky task – something that this article could help with.
I’ve scoured the jam-packed programme and come up with ten films (included below with brief descriptions and screening details) that should not be missed:

Best known for her role as Amy Pond in Doctor Who, Karen Gillan makes her feature leading debut this year with the anticipated Not Another Happy Ending, which makes its world premiere at the end of the month at the Edinburgh International Film Festival.
With the film about to debut for the world, we’ve got the first trailer to share. And it promises that Richard Curtis’ About Time won’t be the only stellar new British romantic-comedy to fall in love with this year.
Karen Gillan stars as Jane, a young Glasgow writer whose first novel is a success, thanks in part to the editing of her sympathetic but business-minded publisher, Tom (Stanley Weber). Reconciled with her estranged father (Gary Lewis) and embarked on a new relationship with a handsome and self-absorbed writer (Henry Ian Cusick), Jane comes down with a severe case of writer’s block while struggling with her second novel.

The former Doctor Who star appeared in a number of shots showcasing a chic and mature style as she prepares to appear in the city for the screening of her latest project.

With little over a month to go until this year’s Edinburgh International Film Festival (Eiff) kicks off in earnest, and the programme launch now just weeks away, it seemed a little odd that prospective audiences still had no idea what might open the 2013 festival.
However, we now have an opening film to go with John McKay’s Not Another Happy Ending, the indie rom-com announced in April as festival closer, in the form of Drake Doremus’ Breathe In.
The film, which reunites the writer-director with Like Crazy star Felicity Jones, features another exchange student who this time alters the lives and relationships of her upstate New York host family. The film co-stars Guy Pearce and Amy Ryan, and was described as a stand-out ”in a healthy year for American cinema” by returning artistic director Chris Fujiwara.
Jones isn’t the only one of Doremus’ past collaborators to return for Breathe In.

I participated in a Dreamago panel moderated by WGA-West VP and USC film writing prof and an artistic director at the Sundance Institute Wrting Labs, Howard Rodman.
Other panelists included Vince Fischer who, having been educated and working in Paris, Montreal, New York in business and advertising, event production, and creating the endorsement agency GlamCom which initiates deals between celebrities and products, such as he did with George Clooney and Nespresso, has gone on to create Artistic Alliance Eci which represents screenwriters, directors and actors with offices in Beijing, L.a. and Paris, to match people and projects abroad. Korea by Sookie and due to be released in Norht America in 2013 works with Janet Yang and is eager to do more co-productions in China though he admits to difficulties with censors, etc. You can see the trailer of Shanghai Calling here.

His latest screenplay is being produced by Cary Brokaw for Avenue Pictures (The Player, Closer, Angels in America). He is curretnly developing an original miniseries for HBO for the Russian Market and a crime drama for Sreda in Moscow.
Paula Manzanedo-Schmitt is VP of Film Finances Inc. the world leader in completion guarantees. She has been involved in more than 1,000 films and TV programs internationally and in U.S. She spoke of the various cross-cultural requisites in film production abroad.
The discussion centered around whether filmmakers could make a film without the notorioius interference of studios (they should all be so lucky as to have this problem). In other words, the panelists discussed their experiences making films with Russians and Chinese. All agreed that working abroad, and especially with international sales agents who also produce allows for greater freedom of vision (although in China the reward is writng so that China censorship does not interfere because one has written to their specifications). All agreed also that there is a certain cross-cultural divide one must discover in order to work effectively.
My suggestions for finding a way to create without corporate interferences are listed below:

** Work with international sales agents who produce international coproductions which include U.S., or with the producers of those films who now have established track records.

Hungaricom Ltd (Hungary) has the English language animated comedy feature The Secret of Moonacre and Immigrants - L.A. Dolce Vita both produced by Arlene Klasky, Gabor Csupo, and Gabor Kalomista, a Los Angeles based company with Hungarian born principals. The synopsis of Immigrants is worth repeating: More people immigrate to America than to all other countries in the whole world combined. Why? Is it because they love hot dogs and hamburgers? Or because they want to meet Snoop Dogg or have a close encounter with Pamela Anderson? Maybe. But the real reason is – immigrants go to the U.S. to chase the American dream. Immigrants is the story of Vladislav (a Russian), and Joska (a Hungarian). Both are immigrants and best friends, living and chasing the American dream together. Vlad has a daughter, Ana, who’s adapting to life in America at the speed of light, while her dad is in complete culture shock. They stay at the Vista del Mar, an apartment complex run by an old failed actress, Greta Knight, who is always after Vlad for sexual favors. The building is home to immigrants from all over the world: Flaco, a friend from Mexico; Mr. Chea, who runs a Chinese family restaurant; Nazim, a former Pakistani nuclear scientist who drives a tour bus; and Mr. Splits, an old black pimp. We follow Vlad and Joska in their adventures… through their encounter with the American capitalist company Glut-co, through their attempt to open a Russian/Hungarian restaurant, and as their friendship is put in jeopardy when they hit the L.A. night scene. All the while Vlad is looking for a way to make a life for himself and his daughter; and Joska… well, Joska is mainly looking for women.

Doctor Who star Karen Gillan is to make her feature film debut as a leading lady in Glasgow-set indie comedy film Not Another Happy Ending which is due to start shooting next month. She plays successful writer Jane Lockhart who writes best when she's unhappy.
Karen recently wrapped a three-year stint as The Doctor’s companion – and promised that her character’s exit will be “unexpected”, as well as emotional.
French actor Stanley Weber will play Thomas Duval – the publisher to Karen’s novelist character Jane Lockhart, a passionate writer who suffers a bout of writers block on her second novel.
Here's the film's synopsis:
When a struggling publisher discovers his only successful author is blocked he knows he has to unblock her or he's finished. With her newfound success, she’s become too damn happy and he thinks she can't write when she's happy. The only trouble is, the worse he makes her feel,...

God forbid the lovely Karen Gillan should join the ranks of Resting Thesps too long when Jenna Louise-Coleman takes her place as the new assistant in Doctor Who. Therefore consider contributing to the next film Gillan's committed to, funded by the IndieGoGo initiative. Having recently become aware of IndieGoGo through this site's former connection with the Minister Of Chance project, the idea of crowd-funding really taking off is the realisation of a dream I have had, along with many others, I'm sure, for a long time.
This particular project, a film with a crowd-funding target of a pretty measly $50,000 (£31,500 approx) is entitled Not Another Happy Ending, and also features fellow Scot actor Emun Elliot from Ridley Scott's forthcoming Alien prequel Prometheus.
The movie, "a smart, funny, sexy, intelligent indie romantic comedy" set in Glasgow , is written by David Solomons (Five Children and It), and directed by John McKay (We...

[1] Way back in late 2010, we reported on the potential casting [2] of Bradley Cooper in the lead role for David O. Russell's The Silver Linings Playbook. At some point, however, Mark Wahlberg emerged as the star of the film, and Cooper was no longer associated with the project. Now, it's looking like we're back to square one, with Wahlberg out and Cooper back in. Wahlberg has dropped out of the film due to a scheduling conflict with a different project (possibly Broken City with Allen Huges), and Cooper is currently in talks to replace him. Also in talks for the movie is Robert De Niro, who met [3] with Russell earlier this summer regarding an unnamed part. Jennifer Lawrence is still set [4] to co-star as the main character's love interest. Based on a novel by Matthew Quick, the film follows a former high school teacher (that'd be Coopers part) who’s...

You may know actress Karen Gillan as her Doctor Who character, Amy Pond, but fans will soon know her as the star of Not Another Happy Ending. The fair-skinned actress just negotiated to continue on the cast of Doctor Who for a seventh season. If that excites you, you’ll really cheer after viewing season six’s trailer with Matt Smith as the 11th Doctor.
As for Not Another Happy Ending, Gillian there stars as a cooky writer, famous for a “miserable”, but best selling fiction novel who falls in writer’s block because since her success, she is too happy to continue writing sad content. In romantic comedy fashion, her publisher played by Black Death actor Emun Elliott (a 2009 Screen Star of Tomorrow), tries to break of her writer’s block by actively trying to make her more miserable, only to come to the realization that he is in love with her.

Despite her star rising thanks to the role of Amy Pond in Doctor Who, it doesn’t seem like Karen Gillan has been able to crack the big screen just yet. While she was announced as part of the cast of David Baddiel’s Romeo and Brittney last year, that film seems mired in the development swamps. So perhaps she’ll have more luck with indie romance tale Not Another Happy Ending. No, it’s not set in a dodgy massage parlour. Ending actually follows a lovely but oddball writer (Gillan) who specialises in misery-packed yet hugely successful fiction. Unfortunately for her, that success has led to her becoming much happier, which in turn means she’s now suffering from a serious case of writer’s block. In steps her publisher (Black Death’s Emun Elliott), who decides to make her life miserable once more. In the process, of course,...

Some people can't get enough of stories of love triumphing against all odds, and for them, there's a whole section of Netflix full of Nicholas Sparks movies.
For the more cynical movie-goer, or the guy or gal who just wants to know where Amy Pond goes when she's not slipping through the universe, there's "Not Another Happy Ending."
The movie, written by David Solomoms, tells the story of a girl whose happiness nearly ruins her life, and the handsome hero who sets out to make sure she's miserable.
Screen Daily reports that "Doctor Who" actress Karen Gillan will star as the film's protagonist, an author of dark fiction whose career success causes an ascent out of agony and leaves her unable to write.
Desperate to get her back in the swing of things, her publisher, played by "Game of Thrones" actor Emun Elliot, does everything in his power to make her unhappy,...

Universal Pictures has agreed to pay $20,000 to the Alaska Press Club to settle complaints about fake news archives used to promote the movie "The Fourth Kind," the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reported.
The Anchorage lawyer who negotiated the settlement for the Fairbanks paper and six other media outlets, John McKay, said the fake online stories undermined the credibility of the news organizations. One of the selling points of the recently released The Fourth Kind was its ambiguity. Was it really based on actual news reports about and research into alien abductions in and around Nome, Alaska, or was Hollywood pulling a fast one? According to the legal agreement reached between seven Alaskan newspaper companies and Universal Studios, we're definitely leaning toward the latter.
Here are the highlights of The Fourth Estate vs. The Fourth Kind dispute courtesy of the Alaska Dispatch:
Nomeites didn't much like the film exploiting unexplained disappearances of Northwest Alaskans, most of whom likely perished due to exposure to the harsh climate, as science fiction nonsense. The Alaska press liked even less the idea of news stories about unexplained disappearances in the Nome area being used to hype some "kind" of fake documentary.
There wasn't much the former could do about the movie, other than whine. But there was...

Chicago – Any good reader of HollywoodChicago.com knows that we have a soft spot for modern British television. “Torchwood,” “Doctor Who,” “Primeval,” “Robin Hood,” “Ashes to Ashes,” and many more shows range from good to great. One of the best series of the ’00s is the excellent “Life on Mars,” soon-to-be available in a series 1 DVD box set and accompanied on store shelves this month by the sixth volume of the thrilling “Wire in the Blood”.
DVD Rating: 5.0/5.0 The spectacular “Life on Mars” was adapted into an ill-fated ABC remake last fall and I worry that American audiences will ignore the original because they see the remake as a failure (which is itself debatable). Whether or not you liked or disliked the Yank version, please check out the BBC original, a great twist on the standard police procedural.
Life on Mars will be released on DVD on July 28th, 2009.
