Peloton is dismissing a chunk of its workforce, including its top executive. Barry McCarthy announced that he is stepping down as the CEO of the fitness tech company, which is laying off approximately 400 workers.
The Peloton employees who have received pink slips account for about 15% of the company’s total workforce. As part of this round of layoffs, Peloton is enacting a broad restructuring plan that will see it close retail showrooms and reconfigure its business abroad.
That shift will happen under a new leadership team. McCarthy, a Netflix vet, took over as Peloton CEO in 2022 when he replaced the company’s Co-Founder, John Foley. For the time being, McCarthy will be succeeded by a pair of interim CEOs: Board Chair Karen Boone and Director Chris Bruzzo.

Dublin, Aug 20 (Ians) Ruturaj Gaikwad anchored India’s innings with a fine fifty while Sanju Samson and Rinku Singh dished out impactful knocks in carrying India to a competitive 185-5, which set the base for them to beat Ireland by 33 runs in the second T20I at Malahide on Sunday and take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-game series.
Opener Andy Balbirnie was the lone ranger for Ireland with his 72 off 51 balls, but it went in vain as India’s bowlers, led by a superb Jasprit Bumrah, kept Ireland to 152-8. Prasidh Krishna launched a double-strike in his first over of the powerplay, as well as Ravi Bishnoi and Arshdeep Singh being amongst the wickets on a sunny day at Malahide.

But Prasidh Krishna pushed Ireland on the backfoot in the next over – taking out Paul Stirling and Lorcan Tucker with short balls. Ravi Bishnoi dealt Ireland another blow in the power-play by castling Harry Tector.
But Balbirnie continued to march forward and resurrect Ireland’s chase.

Gaikwad made 58 off 43 balls and shared a crucial 71-run partnership with Samson, who made a quick-fire 26-ball 40. Though it appeared that India was losing some momentum in the back-end of the innings, Rinku found his groove in a late burst to make 38 off 21 balls and with Shivam Dube being 22 not out, the duo hit 42 runs in last 12 balls to take India past 180.
Pushed into batting first, runs began to flow for India from the second over with Gaikwad clipping Josh Little for four. Yashasvi Jaiswal swivelled twice off the backfoot to take a four and six off the left-arm pacer. When Barry McCarthy gave width, Jaiswal was quick...

Dublin, Aug 19 (Ians) When Ireland were reduced to 59/6 in the T20I series opener against India, it looked like they would be skittled out for a score below 100. But pacer Barry McCarthy had other ideas, as he stood tall against the Indian bowlers by sharing a 57-run stand with Curtis Campher (39).
The right-arm pacer ended the Irish innings by raising his maiden T20I fifty and was unbeaten at 51 off just 33 deliveries. He hit four fours and as many sixes to propel the hosts to a decent 139/7. After India won by two runs via the Dls method, McCarthy lauded the fighting spirit of his side despite being on the losing side.
“To get ourselves so close to a win after our position 10 overs in is a credit to our spirit. We fought the whole way to the end and what if it could have been another wicket in those last two balls,...

Dublin (Ireland), Aug 17 (Ians) Gearing up for the upcoming two-match T20 Internationals series against India, Ireland’s wicketkeeper-batter Lorcan Tucker is looking forward to making a good impression against one of the world’s top teams.
When India last visited Ireland in June last year for a similar two-match series, the Men in Blue won 2-0 and this time too, they are looking for a similar result, especially with bowling spearhead Jasprit Bumrah and fellow-pacer Prasidh Krishna returning from injuries and hoping to put up their claims for selection in the World Cup team.
Ireland, on their part, are not hoping to be cannon fodder again and are confident of putting up a tough fight against India, making the most of the home conditions.
Their confidence is based on the experience their players have gained a lot of experience in the last one year or so, said Tucker, who had...

Dublin, Aug 4 (Ians) Ireland have brought in all-rounder Fionn Hand and leg-spinner Gareth Delany in their 15-member squad for three-match T20I series against India, starting from August 18 in Malahide.
Hand had missed out on selection in Ireland’s recent qualification for the 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup while Delany is returning from injury after breaking his wrist during the Men’s Odi World Cup Qualifiers in Zimbabwe in June.
“Giving opportunities to players also filters down the series themselves, so I would expect that all of the 15 players named in the India series squad will feature at some point. The Indian side arriving in Ireland is an exciting one for the supporters, but as we showed last year, we have the talent and confidence to match them on the field of play and we have high hopes for another fiercely contested series.

Harare, June 30 (Ians) Three wickets from fast bowler Craig Young, followed by a belligerent half-century from opener Paul Stirling helped Ireland beat USA by six in their seventh-place playoff semi-final at the Men’s Odi World Cup Qualifiers, here on Friday.
For the USA, Saiteja Mukkamalla and Sushant Modani scored half-centuries, but Young’s three-fer and support from other bowlers meant they were 196 all out. In reply, Stirling smashed nine fours and two sixes in his 45-ball 58 to take Ireland over the line with 94 balls to spare.
Asked to bat first in the first-ever Odi meeting between the two teams, opener Steven Taylor played with plenty of freedom early on, before a double-wicket maiden from Young in the seventh over took out both Taylor and captain Monank Patel.
Mukkamalla and Modani then combined for an 88-run partnership before the former was run out in the 23rd over by McBrine catching him short of his crease.

Dublin, May 24 (Ians) Cricket Ireland on Wednesday announced that right-handed batter Stephen Doheny has missed out from the 15-player squad to be captained by Andrew Balbirnie for the upcoming Icc Mens Cricket World Cup Qualifier in Zimbabwe.
The Qualifier event, to be held in Zimbabwe from June 18-July 9, will see 10 teams competing for two remaining spots in the ten-team 2023 Icc Men’s Cricket World Cup, to be held in India from October-November.
“Unfortunately, hard decisions had to be made, and Stephen Doheny misses out on this trip. Stephen is a player we admire and want to continue to invest in, but we think the time is right for him, just now, to take a step back and work on a few technical aspects of his game at the domestic level.”

Adelaide, Nov 4 (Ians) Ireland left-arm pacer Josh Little’s hat-trick went in vain as New Zealand took a big step towards qualifying for the semifinals of Men’s T20 World Cup with a 35-run win in their last Group 1 match in Super 12s at the Adelaide Oval on Friday.
New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson played exquisite shots all across the park to make a solid 61 off 35 balls, shrugging off his lean run to get his first fifty of the tournament, and help his side reach a challenging 185/6.
But Little stole the thunder of it by dismissing him, Jimmy Neesham and Mitchell Santner on the trot in the 19th over to record second hat-trick of the tournament as Ireland gave away only 12 runs in their last two overs.
The sensational hat-trick propelled Little to end with figures of 3/22 in his four overs. But Ireland could make only 150/9 in their 20 overs with...

Brisbane, Oct 31 (Ians) Lorcan Tucker’s fighting knock (71 not out off 48) went in vain as Australia produced a clinical all-round performance to hammer Ireland by 42 runs in a Super 12 game and keep their semifinal hopes alive in the ongoing Icc Men’s T20 World Cup at the Gabba, here on Monday.
With this win, Australia pushed their net run rate up to -0.304, still below that of England, but they moved to the second spot in Group 1 standings with five points in four matches. On the other hand, Ireland are in fourth spot with three points.
Australia skipper Aaron Finch played an excellent knock of 63 from 44 deliveries to guide his team to a commanding total of 179/5 in 20 overs, after they were invited to bat first. Apart from Aaron, all-rounders Marcus Stoinis (35) and Mitchell Marsh (28) also made valuable contributions with the bat for the hosts.

Hobart, Oct 21 (Ians) Leg-spinner Gareth Delany picked career-best figures of 3/16 while veteran opener Paul Stirling, playing in his seventh Men’s T20 World Cup, stood up when it mattered the most, slamming a sensational 66 not out to take Ireland to the Super 12 stage of the ongoing tournament with a nine-wicket drubbing of West Indies in a decisive Group B match of the first round at Bellerive Oval on Friday.
After Delany kept things tight, with other bowlers chipping in, to keep the West Indies to an under-par 146/5 in 20 overs, with Brandon King making an unbeaten 62, Stirling came out all guns blazing in his unbeaten 48-ball knock, hitting six fours and two sixes to make a mockery of the chase, hunting down the total with 15 balls remaining.

Hobart, Oct 21 (Ians) Brandon King marked his return to the playing eleven with an unbeaten 62 to take the West Indies to an under-par 146/5 in 20 overs of their do-or-die Group B clash against Ireland in the Icc Men’s T20 World Cup at Bellerive Oval on Friday.
For Ireland, leg-spinner Gareth Delany picked career-best figures of 3/16 and kept things tight, while off-spinner Simi Singh and pacer Barry McCarthy took a wicket apiece to give their side a good chance of qualifying for the Super 12 stage.
Pushed into bowling first, Ireland drew first blood as Barry McCarthy foxed Kyle Mayers with his length ball, the left-hander completely mistiming the ball to mid-off. Johnson Charles feasted on Curtis Campher’s short balls, taking two fours and a six on three consecutive deliveries in the fourth over.

Hobart, Oct 19 (Ians) Curtis Campher and George Dockrell shared an unbeaten 119-run stand for the fifth wicket in Ireland’s successful chase of 177 to seal a come-from-behind six-wicket win over Scotland in their Group B match of the first round in Icc Men’s T20 World Cup at Bellerive Oval on Wednesday.
After opener Michael Jones hit a magnificent 86 off 55 balls to carry Scotland to a massive 176/5, the bowlers came into act by reducing Ireland to 61/4 in 9.3 overs and victory looked improbable with every minute.
That’s when Campher (72 not out off 37 balls) and Dockrell (39 not out off 27 balls) joined forces to shock Scotland and get a win out of nowhere for Ireland with a brilliant partnership in just 9.3 overs and keep them in the reckoning for a Super 12 spot.

Hobart, Oct 19 (Ians) Scotland continued to impress in the Icc Men’s T20 World Cup as opener Michael Jones hit a magnificent 86 to carry the side to a massive 176/5 against Ireland in their Group B match of the first round at Bellerive Oval on Wednesday.
It was a dominant innings for Scotland, who hardly kept any foot wrong from the time of winning the toss and electing to bat first. Jones was unarguably the star of Scotland’s innings, hitting six fours and four sixes in his 55-ball 86, at a high strike-rate of 156.36.
After losing his opening partner George Munsey in the second over of the innings, Jones had to be cautious as well as adjust to the conditions. After passing through the initial phase, he then came out swinging with his array of shots, and looking delightful in hitting a majority of his boundaries through the leg-side, including one...

Ngarava set the tone upfront for Zimbabwe by castling Paul Stirling on the second ball of Ireland’s chase. He returned back in the third over to take out Lorcan Tucker, who shuffled a long way and failed to make any contact with attempted heave.

San Francisco, Oct 9 (Ians) US exercise and fitness equipment company Peloton CEO Barry McCarthy has announced to cut 12 per cent of the workforce (nearly 500 employees) in a latest lay-off round, and he does not understand why people are not happy with his decision.
McCarthy was apparently surprised to learn that media reports “accentuated the negative” from his lay-off announcement.
The Verge reported, citing an internal memo the CEO issued, that accused the Wall Street Journal of creating the wrong impression instead of praising the company.
“We were expecting a story about redemption and the successful turnaround of Peloton, which is why we invested time on background briefing them on the state of our turnaround,” he wrote.
“The headline should have been that recent strong execution and today’s restructuring have positioned us to meet our fiscal year-end goal of break-even cash flow, with a renewed focus on accelerating our growth,...

The 32-year-old Young, who has been a key bowler for Ireland since his white-ball debut in 2014, will miss out on the mega event with a recurring injury. He will be returning to Ireland for further assessment.
“Unfortunately, whilst out in Sydney for our T20 World Cup prep camp, Craig experienced a recurrence of a chronic issue which we have been managing for quite some time,” Mark Rausa, Head of Physiotherapy and Medical Services at Cricket Ireland said in a release.
“Whilst we thought we were on top of the issue, it sadly flared up once we arrived in Sydney and began training. Craig will now return home for an assessment with our medical specialists to plan out his rehab,...

Dublin (Ireland), Sep 20 (Ians) Off-spinner Simi Singh was on Tuesday selected ahead of Andy McBrine as the third spinner in the Ireland squad for the Men’s T20 World Cup in Australia starting next month.
With George Dockrell and Gareth Delany doing well this season, the selectors decided to pick one spinner in the 15-member squad and Simi Singh got the nod.
“One of the most considered decisions we had to make was around our spin bowling options. With George Dockrell and Gareth Delany both having an impact this summer and the variation they bring to the attack, it came down to making a choice between Simi Singh and Andy McBrine.
“Andy can feel very unfortunate to have missed out this time, but we believe Simi offers more variation on Australian wickets with his ability to take the ball away from both right and left-handers,” Cricket Ireland’s chief selector Andrew White said.

Belfast, Aug 18 (Ians) Ireland sealed the five-match T20I series against Afghanistan with a thrilling, rain-affected seven-wicket win in the decider match at Stormont.
After winning the toss and electing to bowl first, Ireland had an excellent start, thanks to an opening burst from Player of the Match, pacer Mark Adair.
After a quiet first over from Josh Little, Hazratullah Zazai looked to have got Afghanistan moving with two consecutive boundaries, the first streakily skewed past point, and the second smoked through the covers.
However, Adair struck back, enticing the explosive opener to miscue high into the air, with Simi Singh taking the catch at mid-off. Three balls later, he claimed another, Rahmanullah Gurbaz poking outside off and edging through to the keeper.
Little snuck through a second quiet over before Adair struck again, once more hitting back after a first-ball boundary. This time he was cut through point by...

Belfast, Aug 12 (Ians) An impressive bowling performance from Ireland set up their five-wicket win over Afghanistan to take a 2-0 lead in the five-match T20I series. The hosts limited the visitors to 122/8 in 20 overs, with four bowlers taking two wickets each and ensured Afghanistan’s batting never gathered any serious momentum.
In reply, Ireland briefly tumbled in the middle overs of their chase, falling from 72/1 to 86/4. But George Dockrell held his nerve with an unbeaten 19-ball 25 to secure victory. After Afghanistan chose to bat first, Mark Adair took a wicket on the first ball of second over as Rahmanullah Gurbaz found the hands of Barry McCarthy to depart for 1.
Josh Little then bowled Usman Ghani in the next over to leave Afghanistan at 20/2. Ibrahim Zadran hit three boundaries off McCarthy’s first over. But Curtis Campher struck from the final ball of the sixth over as Zadran’s flick...

Dublin, Dec 11 (Ians) Cricket Ireland has announced a 16-man squad for the two Odi series against the UAE and Afghanistan set to be played in January. The Odi series against Afghanistan will be part of the World Cup Super League.
This will be Ireland first international action since their dramatic run-chase victory over World Champions England back in early August.
Players and support staff, who are not on the tour, will remain at home under Covid-19 safe conditions in case a substitute needs to be flown out to Abu Dhabi during the month, said Cricket Ireland.
Gary Wilson will not join the Ireland squad for this tour in order to be at home for the birth of his second child, with Neil Rock coming in as wicket-keeping cover.
There is also no place for the likes of George Dockrell, William Porterfield, Boyd Rankin, who were all part of the touring party to England in August.

The streaming company previously forecast to its investors that its operating performance in the three months to end of September would weigh in somewhere between a slender €2 million profit and a €78 million loss. In the end, Spotify posted a €54 million ($60.4 million) Q3 operating profit – some thirty times bigger than its predicted highpoint. Indeed, this profit figure was so substantial,...

Tencent Music Entertainment, the biggest music-streaming company in China, is in trouble. Ever since the company struck a sub-licensing deal with Warner Music Group (Wmg) in November 2014 — the first of its kind — it has enjoyed a privileged relationship with the world’s biggest music-rights companies.
That privileged relationship is now facing severe scrutiny. In January, China’s State Administration of Market Regulation launched an investigation into Tencent Music Entertainment, and its current contracts with all three major record companies: Wmg, plus Universal Music Group and Sony Music Entertainment.

“[We] missed on subs. That’s on us.”
Spotify wants the world — including the full gamut of Wall Street — to know that it messed up. As reported Wednesday, the company’s global subscriber count grew to 108 million in the second quarter of this year, up by 8 million quarter-on-quarter, but short of a consensus analyst forecast of 109 million.
Spotify was conspicuously keen to pin the blame for this stumble on itself. After founder and CEO Daniel Ek delivered the “on us” line during the intro to Spotify’s Q2 earnings call, the firm’s stoical CFO,...

In many ways, Spotify enjoyed a spectacular end to 2018.
The company finished the year with its first ever quarterly operating profit – €94m ($107 million) — something that challenged many of the long-term naysayers about its business model. In addition, amid its year-end financial-results announcement, Spotify confirmed that it was set to spend between $400 million and $500 million on acquisitions throughout 2019, including the recent buyouts of podcasting content company Gimlet Media and distribution platform Anchor.
What’s more, Spotify could now hit more than 100 million paying subscribers worldwide by the end of March, having...

David Wells, a 14-year veteran of Netflix who has guided the company through a period of massive growth since 2010 as chief financial officer, announced plans to leave the company.
Netflix said Wells will step down after helping the company choose his successor and announced that its search for a new CFO will include “both internal and external candidates.” Wells said in a statement that after exiting Netflix, he intends to focus more on philanthropy “but I’m not sure yet what that looks like.”
“After discussing my desire to make a change with Reed [Hastings, Netflix’s chairman and CEO], we agreed that with Netflix’s strong financial position and exciting growth plans, this is the right time for us to help identify the next financial leader for the company,” Wells said.
Hastings, in a statement, said, “David has been a valuable partner to Netflix and to me. He skillfully managed our finances during a phase...

Spotify largely hit expectations on all metrics for the second quarter of 2018, although the music-streaming giant remained firmly in the red with its net loss doubling year over year.
The quarterly results were generally in line with expectations. The company ended the quarter with 180 million monthly active users (7 million net adds) and 83 million Premium subscribers (up 8 million sequentially) worldwide.

Total Q2 revenue was €1.27 billion ($1.49 billion), up 26% from the year-earlier period. Spotify said the topline was up 34% year-over-year adjusting for changes in foreign exchange rates. Operating losses grew to €90 million (vs. €79 million in the year-ago quarter), while operating margin of -7.1% improved 70 basis points.
