While talking with Robin Roberts on Good Morning America, James Van Der Beek said his health journey has been “a lot” for him emotionally.
The 47-year-old actor became popular through his roles in the TV series Dawson’s Creek and the movie Varsity Blues.
Van Der Beek revealed last month that he’d been privately battling stage 3 colorectal cancer with the support of his family.
This week’s GMA appearance with Robin was the actor’s first televised interview since news of his diagnosis last month.
At one point during their discussion, Van Der Beek’s emotions overcame him as Robin brought up an important aspect of his cancer battle.
After the GMA anchor’s remarks, he said he felt like he was “gonna lose it” as he wiped away tears.

As someone who came into his teenage years in 1990, I have not only had a fascination with the films and TV shows I grew up with in the 80s but also the movies and television shows of the 90s. After all, it wasn’t until the 90s that I became hooked on renting movies from the local video shop, recording films and shows off TV and creating a massive archive of personal recordings. Hey… there’s a reason I run this website and that fascination began in the 90s and continues to this day (thank god for digital formats though – can you imagine how big my tape collection would be today?!). Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com appears on The Eddie Volkman Show on Wssr-fm on March 12th, 2021, reviewing the new documentary “Kid 90,” streaming on Hulu beginning on Friday, March 12th.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
Remember Soleil Moon Frye? She was the child actor who brought the character “Punky Brewster” to life in that late 1980s sitcom. After the series ended, and through her teenage years in the 1990s (thus “Kid 90”), she had an ever-present camcorder that chronicled her life in that decade … and the lives of her fellow kid actors like Stephen Dorff, Heather McComb, David Arquette, Leonardo DiCaprio and Mark-Paul Gosselaer. The documentary is a look back at the footage, and the up/down lives associated with it.
“Kid 90” is available to stream on Hulu beginning March 12th. Featuring Soleil Moon Frye, Stephen Dorff, Heather McComb, David Arquette, Leonardo DiCaprio and Mark-Paul Gosselaer. Rated “TV-ma”

By the time she turned 13, “Punky Brewster” star Soleil Moon Frye had done more to impact pop culture than most Americans will in their lifetime. But once the show was canceled in 1988, things stalled. That’s roughly when Frye started carrying a video camera practically everywhere she went, documenting a one-in-a-million adolescence that was anything but the squeaky-clean, always-sunny sitcom that had made her famous. Nor will it seem very relatable to those who idolized the fellow celebs she called friends, even if you spent the decade with their faces pinned to your walls.
With “Kid 90,” Frye opens “Pandora’s box” — as she calls the archive of video cassettes, diary entries, answering machine messages and so forth that she kept locked away for more than 20 years — bracing herself for what she might find, and how those memories might make her feel. The resulting film, which hits Hulu amid a...

My mindset entering Soleil Moon Frye’s autobiographical documentary kid 90 anticipated a fun, nostalgic, low stakes look at kid celebrities. That’s what the slew of happy photos depicting teenaged Stephen Dorff, Brian Austin Green, and Balthazar Getty smiling sells: their childhood adventures as inseparable friends and peers removed from the otherwise tumultuous Hollywood machine. Frye only adds to that image when starting things off by saying, “this is an account of what it meant to be a child in the 1990s.” Expectations are therefore set for a universally relatable experience since I too was a child in the 1990s… just without having my face on Bop magazine covers. And while that is exactly what Frye delivers, joy isn’t the familiar through-line connecting our two worlds. It’s pain.
This reality shouldn’t be surprising, though, since we all share that communal darkness beneath our cheery façades whether or...

’90s kids, may we present the nostalgia-inducing trailer for Soleil Moon Frye’s (“Punky Brewster”) documentary, “kid 90.”
Watch the trailer via the video above.
As a teenager in the ‘90s, Frye carried a video camera everywhere she went, documenting hundreds of hours of footage and then locked it away for over 20 years. After all this time, “kid 90” unlocks the vault and presents a true time capsule of a group of friends growing up in Hollywood and New York City in the ‘90s, balancing childhood and fame pre-internet and social media explosion, according to Hulu’s description of the doc.
At one point in the “kid 90” trailer, Frye talks about developing early: “People were calling me ‘Punky Boobster,'” she said. “Men treated me more like a woman and not a 13-year-old.”
“We weren’t concerned about the internet,” Frye said a bit earlier in the sneak peek. “We did things that teenagers did,...

Hulu on Wednesday unveiled premiere dates for its spring slate of original documentaries, including a film on the “cautionary tale” of WeWork and its charismatic co-founder Adam Neumann.
Weighing in with an 11-word title, WeWork: Or The Making and Breaking of a $47 Billion Unicorn debuts on the streaming platform April 2. Jed Rothstein directed the documentary exploring the office space-sharing startup that attracted massive investment and then nearly collapsed in a twisted pile of Herman Miller chairs. Neumann, described as a “hippie-messianic leader,” was bought out to the tune of a billion dollars.
As Deadline reported last month, Apple TV+ has separately ordered WeCrashed, a limited series based on the WeWork debacle, to star Anne Hathaway and Jared Leto.
Hulu says its documentary benefits from interviews with “journalists, experts and high-ranking former employees” to tell “one of the biggest corporate flameouts and venture capitalist bubbles in recent years.” Campfire, Forbes and...

Written and directed by Nick Scown, Pretty Bad Actress centers on Gloria Green (Heather McComb), a former child star whose popularity has waned over the years. Thanks to her addiction to pills and hot tempered personality, Green is occasionally her worst enemy, and working in show business can take an exacting toll on one’s psyche. [...]

“Pretty Bad Actress” is a pretty muddled movie, distinguished by vertiginous tonal shifts, wildly uneven performances, hit-and-miss satirical thrusts, and cavernous gaps in narrative logic. Indeed, it’s not entirely clear just when this strained farce — involving a fallen-from-grace former child star who may get a career boost from her own kidnapping — is supposed to take place. Conspicuous displays of VHS tapes, flip-top phones, and other period indicators appear to be hallmarks of a 1990s period piece. Sporadically, however, there are pop-culture references that suggest a contemporary timeframe. Even before writer-director Nick Scown springs a brazenly absurd third-act plot twist, it’s tempting to entertain the possibility that, hey, maybe everybody involved in this untidy enterprise simply made things up as they went along.
Despite being cast in the title role, Heather McComb actually gives a credible and creditable performance that consistently stands out as one of the film’s few saving graces.

"True valor does not require recognition." Gravitas Ventures has debuted a trailer for a drama titled Battle Scars, yet another movie about a soldier with Ptsd returning home to America. The description says this "examines the war experience as well as the wrenching change many veterans face upon returning home." I hate to say it, but these kind of Ptsd movies with this exact pitch are a dime a dozen these days. There's nothing creative or unique or interesting about them anymore. But maybe that's just me. Battle Scars stars Zane Holtz (seen on "From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series"), Heather McComb, Ryan Eggold, Fairuza Balk, and David James Elliot. This does not look like it's worth your time, but the trailer is free to watch. The first trailer for X-Men: Apocalypse drops lots of clues for the movie. Let's take a look in some detail...
After months of waiting, Fox has released the first proper trailer for X-Men: Apocalypse, the third (and final) instalment in its X-Men: First Class movie series. Although the teaser at the end of X-Men: Days of Future Past seemed promising, it’s fair to say that reaction to the production stills have been mixed. Does this new glimpse of the movie put you at ease? And what can we learn from it?
Archangel
Previously seen in X-Men: The Last Stand, Warren Worthington (aka Angel) was famously transformed (in the comics) into the horseman Death by Apocalypse, who replaced his recently-amputated wings with new metal ones that could fire razor-sharp feathers at his enemies. I think we can safely say this movie will be operating along similar lines.

Stay Tuned
Written by Tom. S. Parker, Jim Jennewain, and Richard Siegel
Directed by Peter Hyams
USA, 1992
In 2003 the world lost a true comedic treasure; a man so funny that he was dubbed “The greatest physical comedian on the planet” by actor Don Knotts. Knotts was referring to the late, great Mr. John Ritter. With a career spanning nearly four decades in film, TV, and the stage, Ritter was an extremely talented and likable actor. He gave the world many memorable performances, most notably in the delightfully zany sitcom Three’s Company and in the ridiculously warped Problem Child films. With so many roles on his resume, Ritter became a household name for audiences worldwide. He starred in many films over the years, some notable, some not so notable. One picture that slipped through the cracks was 1992’s fantasy/comedy Stay Tuned, a wacky adventure which saw Ritter as an unlikely hero.

Cornered A spine tingling debut trailer (which can be viewed after the jump) has been unleashed upon unsuspecting audiences for Cornered, a serial killer themed action horror/thriller, from director Taylor Chien. Cornered involves a Los Angeles homicide detective who must stop a government trained serial killer before the agency that trained him can cover it up and before the killer finds a new victim.
According to IMDb, the film is rated PG-13. PG-13 be damned, the trailer looks suspenseful with an interesting enough story that has the potential to create a dynamic parallel as it traces all these characters trying to avoid or catch up with one another. It's the classic cat and mouse element. And Cornered does look like it's polished and well made.
Cornered, which stars Hunter G. Williams (Shooting for Tomorrow), Heather McComb (Apt Pupil), Scott Michael Campbell (Push) and Tommy 'Tiny' Lister (Jackie Brown), is...

The star's much-lauded effort to help girls in the African nation of Malawi blew up. In this week's Newsweek, Wayne Barrett looks at how much Kabbalah had to do with it.
One year ago, Madonna squatted in the rust-colored dirt of a sprawling empty lot outside Lilongwe, the capital of Malawi, one of the poorest countries in the world. With curious villagers and invited photographers crowding around, she laid the ceremonial first brick for a planned $15 million girls' academy, a noble mission in a nation where only 27 percent of girls attend secondary school. In a blog post on the website of her Raising Malawi foundation, she wrote that the brick, inscribed with the words "Dare to Dream," was "not just the bedrock to a school-it is a foundation for our shared future."

As the name of The Event's sixth episode suggests, last night’s theme was loyalty: Sean’s loyalty to Leila and especially, Agent Simon Lee’s (Ian Anthony Dale) loyalty to Sophia (Laura Innes) and his people. Sean (Jason Ritter) brings Leila (Sarah Roemer) up to speed and delivers the bad news about her mother’s murder and sister, Samantha’s (Anna Clark) kidnapping. While Collier (Heather McComb) is questioning Clark (D.B. Sweeney), Leila bursts in and asks about her sister but only gets more questions about her father (Scott Patterson). Unable to let this go, Leila asks Sean steal Collier’s SUV so that they can look for clues at her house that may lead to Samantha. Back in Washington D.C., Simon helps Sophia shake a radioactive bio-tracking device that was planted in her food before she was set free. The aide between Blake and Simon notices...

In last night's The Event, Sean (Jason Ritter) starts the night by attempting to dig shrapnel out of Agent Collier’s (Heather McComb) shoulder in a motel. The first flashback follows, two hours earlier where the last episode left off where Sean and the FBI agents are told to make a detour, while Sean tries to convince them that this is the crash site of flight Avias 514, and that someone is covering it up. Suddenly a Winnebago appears from behind crashing into their car and sandwiching the patrol officer–this is the first of the episode’s many conveniences. Sean is able to wriggle free from the wreckage and saves Agent Collier before the leaking gas explodes. Sean hopes his act of kindness can convince Collier to help him find where Leila is, but as expected, she remains skeptical and refuses leaving Sean to make another impulsive move and leaves,...

Week number two of one the most intriguing shows this fall season was one that promised to give us some answers and I am shocked they kept that end of the bargain. One of the biggest complaints I had with the premiere episode is the fact it asked a lot with no return, just a “stay tuned” and we will tell you next week. I was worried people may not be thrilled with that after having too much of Lost-type shows recently that failed in that delivery.
In the episode, newly elected President Martinez (Blair Underwood) grapples with a new reality. A reality where a huge plane has dissipated in mid-air. He and his staff must work quickly to assess what happened and how to respond. Here comes our first answer, turns out the mysterious detainees are actually some sort of meta-human, aliens, whose DNA differ from us by...

James Van Der Beek's pregnant wife has been taking motherhood tips from Demi Moore. Kimberley Brook, who married former "Dawson's Creek" star James last month in a Kabbalah ceremony in Israel, has been paying close attention to mother-of-three Demi during her first pregnancy so she can learn how to be a good parent.

Meanwhile, James has revealed he had the "perfect afternoon" at his wife's baby shower, held at his actor friend Balthazar Getty's house last week, because he didn't have to plan any of it. James told Britain's Ok! Magazine, "We felt very lucky to have friends who said to us, 'Don't worry about anything, just show up.' Which is exactly what we did.
