Round-faced American character actor, the son of a train conductor. On the New York stage from the early 1950's, he had previously formed and led several jazz bands and comedy trios, at one time performing in Manhattan nightclubs and Catskills resorts. For a while, he worked at CBS television as an usher. Later became a successful actor on stage and in TV dramas, sitcoms and commercials, interspersed with occasional films.

Was wounded in action during service with the U.S. Army in Italy during World War II.

Graduated from Ohio University in 1948.

Appeared as Adolf Hitler on the back cover of Mad magazine twice: issue no. 125 (March, 1969) and issue no. 172 (January, 1975).

Children: son Jay; daughters Carol and Kenna.

Won Broadway's 1988 Tony Award as Best Actor (Featured Role - Musical) for portraying gangster Moonface Martin in a revival of "Anything Goes."

McCutcheon was the third cast-member of Steel Magnolias (1989) to pass away (the first being Bibi Besch in 1996, and the second being Nancy Parsons in 2001), dying in 2002, 13 years after the film's release.
