This review of “Creation Stories” was first published on June 16, 2021 after the film’s premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival.
Drug-fueled benders and a knack for finding promising musical acts defined several decades of Scottish producer Alan McGee‘s storied, fast-paced life. The irreverent man behind Creation Records, the fiercely independent label that launched a slew of prominent bands into international stardom, holds a treasure-trove of anecdotes.
Those accounts — from the early, no-expectations days to the downfall from his no-holds-barred lifestyle — were first poured into McGee‘s 2013 autobiography and have now been adapted for the screen by Dean Cavanagh and Irvine Welsh (“Trainspotting”) for actor-turned-director Nick Moran’s film “Creation Stories.” Danny Boyle is an executive producer.
The somewhat-successful framing device here, at least for most of the parade of memories, is McGee’s interview with a young reporter in Los Angeles. Ewen Bremner, best known for playing Spud in “Trainspotting” and its sequel,...

Some movies endure as a treasured soundtrack to which the film itself becomes a mere footnote. That seems likely to prove the case with “Creation Stories,” a biopic of Creation Records’ founder Alan McGee that duly draws sonic fuel from the stellar array of Britpop bands he was involved with. But as directed by Nick Moran in obvious imitation of executive producer Danny Boyle’s most hyperbolic style, scripted by Irvine Welsh and Dean Cavanagh, this apparently loose interpretation of the subject’s memoir becomes a hyperventilating “Behind the Music” caricature, all familiar flash and precious little substance. Rlj Entertainment is releasing on demand and digital platforms in the U.S. on Feb. 25, following openings in most other territories.
McGee’s 2013 same-titled tome is a breezy yet cogent chronicle of a whirlwind career, written in the clear-eyed retrospect of sobriety after years of chemical excess. But the film immediately lunges...

There are multiple moments during Oasis Knebworth 1996, the hugely entertaining documentary revisiting the Britpop legends’ most gargantuan concert, when present-day interviewees remark how lovely it was that the show occurred pre-iPhone, Facebook, etc. Yes, it is the “Not a cell phone in sight. Just people living in the moment” meme brought to life. And in this instance it’s hard to disagree. The audience was not littered with screens. There were no social media platforms overflowing with attendee gloating. Indeed, the Internet of 1996 was glitchy and unavailable to many. Ticket-purchasing involved waiting in long lines outside record stores or tying up the home phone line while waiting (impatiently) on hold.
As Oasis Knebworth 1996 vividly details, just getting to a concert like Knebworth was not easy. Even more difficult? Finding modern bands with enough popularity to headline such a location. Knebworth House was the domain of Monsters of Rock () like the Rolling Stones,...

Summer 2021 is the 25th anniversary of one of the biggest concerts in British music history: Oasis at Knebworth. The two-day event saw 250,000 mad-for-it fans of Liam and Noel Gallagher swarm the grounds of a country house in southern England for a murderer’s row of Britpop heavyweights. No performers stood taller that day than the headliners, the brash, Beatles-meets-Sex-Pistols from Manchester. For a brief period of time, Oasis was the biggest rock band in the world. None of this––literally none––would have happened had it not been for a sarcastic, caustic, hedonistic and drug-fueled Scotsman named Alan McGee. As his biopic Creation Stories opens he is introduced as a “music industry kingpin, guru, and former head of Creation Records.”
That is all true, though as a title card reads, “Most of this happened. Some of the names have been changed… to protect the guilty.” One’s interest in the...

Mixing both the agony and euphoria of rebelling against a society that tries to suppress their innovative ideas can be a liberating experience for prolific visionaries. Music producer and Creation Records co-founder, Alan McGee is one such daring idealist, whose penchant for hard living was instrumental in creating the Brit Pop soundtrack of the 1990s. […]

The life of legendary band manager/Creation Records founder Alan McGee has been brought to the big screen by director Nick Moran and screenwriter Irvine Welsh, in Burning Wheel Productions’ Creation Stories.
Adapted from McGee’s autobiography, Creation Stories- Riots, Raves and Running and Record Label, the film charts McGee’s anarchic rise from small town promoter to industry mogul and the formation his record label Creation, which housed the likes of The Jesus and Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine, Primal Scream and Oasis.
The Creation Stories’ stellar cast includes Ewen Bremner (as McGee), Jason Isaacs, Suki Waterhouse, Rupert Everett, Stephen Berkoff and Jason Flemyng which, along with Moran’s direction, make it an energetic low glide over one of the last great music movements.

Irvine Welsh’s cracking adaption of an autobiography by the ‘President of Pop’ flashes from My Bloody Valentine to his discovery of Oasis
“I’m talentless. But I make things happen.” That’s record label supremo Alan McGee speaking. It’s not remotely true: his taste is his talent. In the 80s and 90s, McGee put out records by the Jesus and Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine, Primal Scream and Teenage Fanclub. Now comes a biopic: a lairy, likable film directed by Lock Stock actor Nick Moran.
Creation Stories is co-written by McGee’s mate Irvine Welsh and Dean Cavanagh, who have adapted McGee’s 2013 autobiography. And it’s the cracking script that is the star here, giving McGee just enough working-class gobshite cheekiness (“I’m just a wee ginger tool from Glasgow”) to balance out the myth-making and megalomania. (This is a man who had a sign on his...

If this film didn't take its title from Creation Records, one would have to consider it ironic, because there's nothing whatsoever that's creative about it. It's the story of the said company's founder, Alan McGee (variously played by Leo Flanagan and Ewen Bremner), who rises from life on a Glasgow housing estate to the pinnacle of music industry success, as represented by a sun lounger and a pool with random bikini-clad young women wandering around it. He wears sunglasses all the time. He makes pithy comments. Danny Boyle produces, and although Nick Moran is ostensibly in charge of the show, one can detect the former's presence through every predictable shot choice.
It begins, of course, with our young hero dwelling in supposed poverty, though actually he doesn't seem to be doing too badly by the standards of the time. His traditional working class father doesn't understand popular music or boys wearing.

In the early 2000s, the Manchester music scene — and its most scene-connected label, Factory Records — became the basis of one of pop’s most unexpectedly beguiling feature films, 24 Hour Party People. This summer, Creation Stories, a quasi-companion piece to that movie, plans to start shooting in London.
The film focuses on the life and musical discoveries of Alan McGee, the Scottish head of Creation Records — the U.K. indie label that, throughout the Eighties and Nineties, rolled out Oasis, the Jesus and Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine, Teenage Fanclub...

Danny Boyle is set to reunite with ‘Trainspotting’ authour Irvine Welsh to executive produce a biopic on Oasis’s label boss Alan McGee.
The project, titled ‘Creation Stories’ will be based on McGee’s own biographical novel and will be adapted for the screen by Welsh and Dean Cavanagh. The film tells of the relentless ambition, mental torment, drugs, bankruptcy, unfathomable wealth, courting politicians and of how one written-off young Glaswegian upstart rose to change the face of British culture.
‘Trainspotting’s’ Ewan Bremner (Spud), will be taking up the lead as McGee. Rupert Everett, Suki Waterhouse and Jason Flemyng have also been added to the cast. Nick Moran will take the helm.
“I’ve been lucky to work with both Danny and Nick over the years and to have the two of them together on this project, along with Ewen, feels like a lottery win,” said Welsh.

Boyle will executive produce “Creation Stories,” a biopic based on the life of music mogul Alan McGee, whose Creation Records also launched other iconic bands like Primal Scream and The Jesus & Mary Chain, Burning Wheel Productions announced Tuesday.
Boyle is reuniting with “Trainspotting” author Irvine Welsh on the project, who is writing the screenplay based on McGee’s autobiography “The Creation Records Story: Riots, Raves and Running a Label.”
Ewen Bremner, who is best known as “Spud” in Boyle’s “Trainspotting,” stars in the project as McGee, and the cast also includes Rupert Everett, Suki Waterhouse and Jason Fleming.

Danny Boyle has come on board rock music biopic “Creation Stories,” about music mogul Alan McGee, as exec producer. Rupert Everett, Suki Waterhouse and Jason Flemyng have joined the cast of the film, which is being sold by Metro International.
Irvine Welsh, who wrote the novel that was adapted as Boyle’s movie “Trainspotting,” and Dean Cavanagh wrote the screenplay, based on McGee’s autobiography, “The Creation Records Story: Riots, Raves and Running a Label.” Ewen Bremner, who was Spud in “Trainspotting,” plays McGee.
The pic tells the story of the Scottish-born McGee and his record label, Creation, which was one of the most successful and influential imprints of the 1980s and ’90s, launching bands such as Oasis, Primal Scream, My Bloody Valentine and The Jesus & Mary Chain. McGee was a charismatic and hard-partying figure on the music scene of the era, with a brash attitude reminiscent of Sex Pistols svengali Malcolm McLaren.

Below is the music video for Liam Gallagher's Come Back To Me, directed by Shane Meadows. The video takes Liam Gallagher back to King Tut's Wah Wah Hut, the venue where Alan McGee discovered Oasis.
Liam had this to say about working with Meadows.
"It was an honour to work with Shane for this video – he’s one of the best British directors around,” said Liam. “It was great to return to the scene of the crime King Tut’s where it all began and the fans never disappoint.”Shane Meadows added:

The excitement of Noel and Liam Gallagher’s rapid rise to pop stardom is well captured in Mat Whitecross’s documentary, but it is disappointingly coy on the band’s decline and breakup
Here is a watchable, intimate but oddly truncated history of Oasis, directed by Mat Whitecross, who gave us the recent Madchester drama Spike Island and the excellent Ian Dury biopic Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll. Noel Gallagher is the film’s executive producer, and it should probably be entitled Oasis: The Golden Years, because it ends with the band’s colossal concert at Knebworth in 1996, almost implying they went up in a blaze of glory after that.
We don’t hear about the Cool Britannia tussle with Blur, or Noel’s strikingly explicit endorsement of Tony Blair and New Labour (“There are seven people in here who are givin’ hope to the young people of this country. Me,...

Noel Gallagher has dismissed Labour leader Ed Miliband as a "f**king communist".
The former Oasis guitarist said that he would not be voting in next week's General Election, and also criticised prime minister David Cameron for his stance on the original leaders' debate proposals.
"I'm not sure I can get behind any of them at the minute," Gallagher says on Channel 4's Alan Carr Chatty Man tonight (May 1).
"I dunno. The fact that Cameron didn't turn up for the debate is a disgrace. I think that Miliband, if he gets in, is just going to fail us."
Carr replies: "Give him a bloody chance. Look at his little face, how can you say that?"
Gallagher retorts: "Because he is a f**king communist."
He then insults Scottish National Party leader Nicola Sturgeon and says: "The other unpleasant little woman from over the border. Cheap shoes... and then there's the Greens - whatever.

A cameo-packed tale of a music fan who dreams of being a rock manager is good-natured but hardly revolutionary
In this lo-fi music-biz comedy, which began life as an online series, scriptwriter Jonny Owen plays a naive music fan who dreams of being a rock manager. With sparky prestige support (Martin Freeman, Maxine Peake, Matt Berry) and cameos from Alan McGee and Carl Barât, Svengali ought to be sharper, but this good-natured, clunky labour of love feels about as fresh as a 2002 copy of the NME. It's curiously timeless, though, and with its Soho locations, could almost have been made in the British pop boom of the late 50s – like Expresso Bongo for Libertines nostalgists.

Many television programmes have made the leap to cinema over the years, but this is surely the first time that a Welsh internet series has branched out onto the big screen.

With an old friend already making a name for himself in the industry, and coincidence leaving him with Alan McGee’s phone number, Dixie is convinced that his time has come, and that it’s now or never.
Writer, producer and star, Jonny Owen has done an undeniably admiral job adapting the series for cinema audiences, even managing to breathe some life into what is a relatively tired narrative convention. Creation was dissolved in 1999, but now looks set for a comeback as McGee, who has been described as an "inspiring nutjob", has announced plans to return to the music business. I Saw The Devil
DVD & Blu-ray, Optimum
It's no big surprise that most film industries rely, at least in part, on crime-related movies; they can be made at all different budget levels and are full of impactful, life-changing events for the characters.
What's interesting is how how each nation has their own enduring signature: we have our mockney gangsters; France tends to explore corruption in the law; Japan and Italy deal in epically large, organised criminal outfits. But it's South Korea that perhaps has the most interesting: the revenge thriller. While you'd think the genre would be all played out by now, I Saw The Devil shows the strength in many of the familiar moves by pushing them to extremes.
