“Words of War,” the political thriller executive produced by Sean Penn, will be released in theaters on May 2.

Rolling Pictures and Decal announced the release date along with an official poster. Directed by James Strong, the film is also executive produced by Representative Eric Swalwell (CA-14).

“Words of War” is based on a true story and follows world-renowned journalist and human rights activist Anna Politkovskaya on her brave crusade, fighting to be an independent voice of truth for the Russian people, putting her own life in jeopardy despite numerous acts of intimidation and violence. Netflix debuted its first look Friday for “Death by Lightning,” a new drama about the true story of the 20th president of the United States, James Garfield, and his greatest admirer Charles Guiteau — the man who would come to kill him.

The limited series, which is based on the Candice Millard novel “Destiny of the Republic,” will premiere on the streamer later this year and stars Matthew Macfadyen and Michael Shannon.

“Napoleon” is back on the march.

Ridley Scott’s historical epic from last year, which starred Joaquin Phoenix as the arrogant military-leader-turned-emperor Napoleon, is getting the director’s cut treatment, with 48 minutes of new footage being added to the runtime. It’s available now on Apple TV+. Watch a new trailer below.

What’s interesting is that, when “Napoleon” was released last fall, Scott claimed that there was a superior four-and-a-half hour version, that would eventually see the light of day. The version arriving on Apple TV+ today is a little shy of three-and-a-half hours. Did he get more judicious during the assembly of this new version? Did Apple blanch at paying for more visual effects and score in service of a movie that didn’t move the needle much? While it’s unclear now, Scott is about to embark on the press tour for “Gladiator II” (out this Thanksgiving...

A Napoleon director's cut is now streaming, but it's not the four-hour cut director Ridley Scott previously teased. Based on the life of French emperor Napoleon Bonaparte, Scott's historical epic hit theaters last year with Joaquin Phoenix in the title role. Before the film even released, Scott teased that he had a four-hour director's cut of the project, which would expand on key aspects of the figure's life.

Apple TV+ now releases Napoleon: The Director's Cut, with 48 minutes of extra footage included. This will bring the director's cut's runtime to a whopping three hours and 24 minutes. As for what's included in the extra footage, viewers can expect another battle, an assassination attempt, and lots more of the relationship between Napoleon and Josephine (Vanessa Kirby).

Ridley Scott’s director’s cut of his 2023 historical epic Napoleon has landed on Apple TV+.

Apple Original Films has released a new version with 48 minutes of never-before-seen footage from the Oscar-nominated tentpole. Napoleon: The Director’s Cut stars Joaquin Phoenix as the French emperor and dives deeper into the origins and ascent of the military leader through the prism of his often volatile relationship with his wife, Josephine, played by Vanessa Kirby.

The director’s cut also focuses on Josephine’s own origin story with what Apple promises are more extravagant costumes, new larger-than-life sets and the previously unreleased Battle of Marengo scene. Champagne itself is sexier than a running shoe or a smartphone, for one thing, while the sinuous vineyards of 19th-century Reims are a more seductive setting for a brand-building story than a squat office block in Beaverton. “Widow Clicquot” certainly makes a virtue of its milieu and rolling landscape, richly shot throughout in dusky earth tones, and more substantively, of the rather romantic lore surrounding the widow in question.

For the first two of its four episodes, ITV’s Douglas is Cancelled, written by Steven Moffat, is a satirical comedy with lawn sprinkler-like aim. Everything, from establishment hypocrisy to teenage puritanism to tabloid unscrupulousness, gets a bit wet. In this form, the show is fine; it’s funny and knowing, while at times also inexplicably vicious towards benign targets – a bit like Private Eye.

Unlike Private Eye though, there’s no sense that useful investigative work is also being done. The conclusions feel foregone, as if they were vacuum-sealed well in advance of the series existing: young people and their principles are ridiculous; the media old guard are cynical, unhappy drunks; modern TV comedy writers aren’t funny; and men should, broadly, be ashamed of themselves…

That last conclusion is Douglas Is Cancelled’s major contribution to its real subject: #MeToo politics.

Sam Mendes is bringing back his acclaimed, Tony Award-winning blockbuster production of The Lehman Trilogy for a fourth run in London.

It’s quite a thing to bring the play, considered a modern classic, back into central London when it just played a 16-week season at the Gillian Lynne Theatre, running until May of last year.

“There’s an enormous appetite for the play, even more so because its been on screen in cinemas via Nt Live,” noted Caro Newling who runs the theater division of All3Media-owned Neal Street Productions, founded by Newling, Mendes, and Pippa Harris.

The new production, produced by the National Theatre and Neal Street, will return to that same Gillian Lynne stage for a limited 14-week slot from September 24 through January 5, 2025. It will be featuring the incredible rotating glass-box scenic design created by Es Devlin, dynamic videos designed by Luke Halls, and stunning lighting design by Jon Clark.

Actor Brian Cox wasn’t impressed with fellow actor Joaquin Pheonix’s performance in ‘Napoleon’.

Cox didn’t mince words when talking about Phoenix’s performance, reports ‘People’ magazine.

The ‘Succession’ star, 77, called Joaquin Phoenix’s performance as Napoleon Bonaparte in Ridley Scott’s biopic ‘Napoleon’ “terrible” during a conversation at the British Library in London.

“It really is appalling,” said the Scottish actor of the “truly terrible performance by Joaquin Phoenix,” as reported by ‘The Standard’.

“I don’t know what he was thinking.”

As per ‘People’, Phoenix, 49, played Napoleon Bonaparte in the Oscar-nominated historical drama directed by Scott and written by David Scarpa, released last November.

Steven Moffat began working on his new limited series “Douglas Is Cancelled” in 2018, before most people — Moffat included — had even heard of the term “cancel culture.”

It was only later he realized his story — about a distinguished news anchor whose life is turned upside down when an unguarded comment goes viral — exemplified it.

“At the time I wrote this, I wouldn’t have known the expression,” the screenwriter, best known for his work on fan favorites “Sherlock” and “Doctor Who,” tells Variety. “Obviously, [once I did] I co-opted it straight into the title.”

The show follows the misadventures of Douglas Bellowes, played by Hugh Bonneville of “Paddington” and “Downton Abbey” fame. After a rare verbal misstep at a wedding spirals out of control, he finds himself scrambling to salvage both his personal and professional lives. Will Idris Elba get stuck on another fateful plane ride?

The gritty details aren’t available just yet but Apple TV+ has given the go-ahead for a second season of Hijack from George Kay and Jim Field Smith.

The first season of Hijack became one of the top dramas on the streamer by landing on the Nielsen Streaming Originals Top 10 list. Elba starred alongside the likes of Archie Panjabi, The Crown’s Ben Miles and Max Beesley as Sam Nelson, an accomplished business negotiator forced to use his guile to save the lives of passengers onboard a hijacked plane making its way to London.

The second season of Hijack will be executive produced by Jamie Laurenson, Hakan Kousetta and Tom Nash at 60Forty Films, alongside executive producers Kay and Field Smith’s own production company Idiotlamp Productions. Field Smith also serves as lead director for the series.

Apple TV+ has confirmed that Elba is set to return as negotiator Sam Nelson in a second season of the high-octane drama, which quickly became one of the streamer’s top shows when it dropped last year.

Told almost in real-time, the series follows Nelson on a seven-hour plane ride from Dubai to London which is hijacked by terrorists. A seasoned negotiator, Nelson quickly steps in to try and diffuse the situation before anyone gets killed – but soon realizes there is more to the hijackers’ plot than first seems.
