Released in 1994 and preceding Gakuryu Ishii‘s more well-known “August in the Water” by just one year, “Angel Dust” represents a significant entry in Ishii’s career, showcasing his departure from his punk rock style as he transitions into the realm of psychological horror. While initially unknown outside of Japan, “Angel Dust” has since gained a little cult following and is now regarded as an essential and representative work of the Japanese horror genre, as well as an influencing piece for similar East Asian serial killer films.
“Angel Dust” offers a gripping detective/serial killer story that is as enigmatic as it is enjoyable. The story follows a female detective, named Setsuko Suma, investigating the connected murders of several young women who were all wearing red the night they were killed. It’s a mixture of goosebump-inducing moments and some more passive ones that are equally as unsettling.

The Television Academy’s 2022 “Pachinko” snub is infamous around these parts.
Soo Hugh’s sweeping generational drama — based on the novel by Min Jin Lee — is easily one of the best TV shows of the decade. It’s won plenty of awards, including a Critic’s Choice Award and a Peabody, yet Season 1 was all but shut out of the Emmys.
But that was before “Shogun.”
“Pachinko” would have been nominated against Emmy favorites “Ozark,” “Better Call Saul,” “Stranger Things,” and “Succession,” — good shows in their own right, but lacking in diversity — none of which competed with “Shōgun” and paved the way for non-English winner with a majority-Japanese cast.
“‘Shōgun’ was such an incredible show,” Hugh said in an interview with IndieWire. “I’m happy with that comparison. Obviously Anna (Sawai) was in both shows and her performance was just glorious. The more shows we have that tell stories of...

Everyone knows Apple TV+ for Ted Lasso, The Morning Show, and Severance. There have been a few other popular TV shows sprinkled in over the last few years. Presumed Innocent starring Jake Gyllenhaal had some good buzz recently. Despite Apple TV+’s substantial investment into the TV business, it’s still looking for mainstream hits.
And, let me be clear. I am a fan of Apple TV+. I appreciate how many TV shows with huge stars the streamer is cranking out these days, but it’s just so odd that almost no one is talking about these great shows!
I put together a list of the four most underrated shows on Apple TV+ that you need to watch right now!

Spoiler Alert: This post contains details about the season one finale of Pachinko, titled “Chapter Eight.”
The Pachinko season ender offers optimism and growth from heartbreaking losses for nearly all generations of the Baek family.
The episode begins in 1938, years after Noa’s birth. Now seven years old, Noa prepares for baby brother Mozasu’s doljabi ceremony. Just before audiences can see what fate-determining item Mozasu picks, a remixed, pop version of the opening sequence livens things up.
From Mozasu’s dol to Hana’s (Mari Yamamoto) final moments, the finale spans the cycle of life. In the present, Hana’s surrounded by her loved ones, including Sunja (Yuh-jung Youn) and Etsuko (Kaho Minami), who have no choice but to accept her eventual death. Tragedy also strikes in the past, with Noa and Sunja (Minha Kim) learning that Isak (Steve Sang-Hyun Noh) has been arrested for suspected treason against the emperor.

Behind the ambitious adaptation of Min Jin Lee’s novel, “Pachinko,” 20 historical consultants from the United States, Korea and Japan, numerous translators four executive producers, two directors, two cinematographers, and 637 cast members, 95 of whom are Asian, worked to bring the epic novel to life.
Directors Kogonada and Justin Chon split the first season in half, each directing four episodes. Showrunner Soo Hugh and Co-Executive Producers Michael Ellenberg and Theresa Kang-Lowe went to great lengths to pitch the show, and now the eight-episode first season is rolling out. Filmed in locations across seven Korean cities, Japan and Vancouver, British Columbia, “”Pachinko” follows the generational advance of a family from Korea to Japan to the United States.
Avid readers of Lee’s novel as well as those with Korean and Japanese film backgrounds, or anyone looking for a beautiful and heartbreaking story may be wondering how to watch “Pachinko.” All of the details,...

Adapted from the bestselling book of the same name, the upcoming Apple TV+ drama series "Pachinko" tells the story of a Korean immigrant family as they struggle to find their way after immigrating to Japan. The "Pachinko" cast features Jin Ha, Anna Sawai, Minha Kim, Soji Arai, Kaho Minami, and Lee Minho - who plays Hansu, a mysterious outsider who's associated with organized crime. "I could really relate to the strength and resilience of the people who had to live those desperate and difficult times," Minho told Variety about his "much darker" role. "And my character, Hansu, has his own way of survival, which is quite heartbreaking."
Though American audiences may not be as familiar with Minho's work, he's acted in a handful of movies and TV shows, including "Legend of the Blue Sea," "The King: Eternal Monarch," and "Boys Over Flowers," which is considered his breakthrough role. In the latter,...

Based on the bestselling book by Min Jin Lee, “Pachinko” chronicles a Korean immigrant family across four generations, with its story centered around matriarch Sunja, played by newcomers Yu-na Jeon and Minha Kim, as well as Oscar-winner Yuh-Jung Youn. Lee plays Hansu, whose romance with Sunja changes the course of both their lives.
Despite his lengthy resume, and his worldwide celebrity, Lee Minho actively pursued the producers behind the show and auditioned for the role. On the red carpet, the actor explained why he simply had to be part of the show.

Prolific Filipino filmmaker Brillante Ma Mendoza steps into the boxing ring with the heartfelt if rather thin drama “Gensan Punch.” Inspired by the true story of Naozumi Tsuchiyama, an amputee who was denied a license to box professionally in Japan and traveled to the Philippines in pursuit of his dreams, “Gensan” lands solid punches for the rights of disabled athletes and excels with its depiction of rigorous training and fierce combat. But we learn very little about the fighter’s life when he’s not wearing gloves. Following its world premiere at Busan, where it shared the Kim Ji-seok Award with Aparna Sen’s “The Rapist”, and its November screening in Tokyo, “Gensan Punch” will launch online as an HBO Asia Original.
With his chiseled features and steely gaze, handsome model-turned-action star Shogen (“Street Fighter: Assassin’s Fist”) certainly looks the part as Nao, a boxer from Okinawa who has been...

“Gensan Punch,” the upcoming film by celebrated Filipino director Brillante Mendoza, has been set as an HBO Asia Original movie. It will become available on regional streaming service HBO Go in the next few months.
Ahead of that, the film will have its world premiere next month at the Busan International Film Festival, and follow that with an out-of-competition gala selection at November’s Tokyo International Film Festival. In Busan, it appears in the Window on Asian Cinema” section and is also one of seven Asian films nominated for the festival’s Kim Jiseok Award.
The Japan and Philippines coproduction film is a fact-based story about a Japanese man with a prosthetic leg who seeks to become a professional boxer. He did his training in the so-called Gensan Quarter of General Santos City, which has long been known for producing athletes, including former champion boxer and current presidential candidate Manny Pacquiao.

Diving into Miike Takashi’s fantasy world is mostly great fun, and in the case of “The Great Yōkai War”, you get catapulted straight back to the 1980-s, a decade marked by a handful of pictures that tackled kids’ imagination. Spielberg’s “E.T” was sweet and Hollywood-cheesy, Richard Donner’s “The Goonies” was the film even our parents approved of, and Jim Henson’s “Labyrinth” was the one film critics wanted us to forget about, which we never did. But we loved them all.
The reason for mentioning those particular film classics is that “The Great Yōkai War” has the retro feel both in terms of the costume design and make-up, and by its extensive use of the stop-motion animation. It also doesn’t care being labelled childish instead of being just a film for children, leaning completely on the fantastic world of the Japanese supernatural...

Of course, we can shrug off these expectations. Drinking beers with your buddies while you are at university, you may express your ironical distance towards these stages...

The jury of the Tokyo International Film Festival expressed warm greetings and happy feelings about a week of movie-watching in the Japanese capital. “If we can call this a problem or an issue of women being the minority among filmmakers that is because women are the minority everywhere,” said Alidoosti.
Minami referenced Cate Blanchett, and the Women’s Day activities at Cannes this year, but it was unclear whether her comments about the Tokyo festival were criticism or encouragement. “This year (in...
