The Title of David Fincher's 'Once Upon a Time in Hollywood' Sequel Has Potentially Been Revealed
Image
It was announced at the start of April thatDavid Fincher had been tapped to direct a sequel to Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood, and now the film may have just got a major unexpected update. Deadline recently sat down for an interview with Michael B. Jordan for his new movie, Sinners, and buried in the report was the claim that the Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood sequel will reportedly be titled The Continuing Adventures of Cliff Booth. This news lines up with the initial report that the sequel will be focused on Brad Pitt’s character, Cliff Booth, and would likely only feature Leonardo DiCaprio’s Rick Dalton in a small role, if at all. The sequel is in the works at Netflix and aims to begin filming this summer in California.

The 2019 showbiz drama is the subject of Brad Pitt’s only Oscar win...

Mpse Nominations: ‘Dune: Part Two,’ ‘Wicked,’ ‘Emilia Pérez’ All Sound Off
Image
The Motion Picture Sound Editors (Mpse) have announced the nominations for the 72nd Annual Mpse Golden Reel Awards, honoring outstanding achievement in sound editing, sound design, music editing, and foley artistry in film, television, and video games. While more casual moviegoers (and fans of “The Thrilling Adventure Hour” bits) can easily recognize the creative wizardry in physically producing sound effects via foley, every part of the sound process is crucial to making us feel the physical and emotional reality of the films and shows we watch.

The nominees are very much in line with the frontrunners for the 2025 Best Sound Oscars. The “Dune: Part Two” team was recognized for dialogue editing/Adr, effects/foley, and music editing, as was “Deadpool & Wolverine,” with “Alien: Romulus,” “Wicked,” and “Emilia Pérez” all scoring nominations in feature sound categories as well.

On the television side, there’s a pleasant mix of action-packed juggernauts...

Apple TV+ FYC event honoring Emmy crafts nominees draws overflow crowd to Culver City
Image
They came from all over L.A. on Monday night to spend a languid, balmy August evening on the roof of the iconic One Culver building in the heart of Culver City. The event honored Emmy nominees in numerous crafts categories at Apple TV+’s Summer Soiree FYC party, where some 300 people gathered to talk about the forthcoming awards and chow down on a gourmet buffet. In the main, they were there to take a bow themselves or rise in applause for hairstylists, make-up artists, composers, sound editors and mixers, production designers, set decorators, main title designers, costume designers and casting directors who had earned 2024 nominations for the Apple original series “The Morning Show,” “Palm Royale” and “Masters of the Air.”

The gathering was designed to shine a vivid light on some of those artisans who tend to receive significantly less attention than the above-the-line red carpet talent but are...

Image
Industry heavyweights Atticus Ross (“Shogun”), Michael Minkler (“Masters of the Air”) and Robert Elswit (“Ripley”) were among those who led the Creative Art Emmy nominations on Wednesday morning.

FX’s “Shogun” dominated the Emmy nominations Wednesday morning, landing 25 nods. The drama series based on James Clavell’s epic novel landed musician and composer Ross a nomination for music composition for a series while costume designer Carlos Rosario was also nominated.

Speaking with Variety, Rosario explained how he created over 2300 designs for the series set in feudal Japan.

Elswit, who reunited with directed Steven Zaillian for Netflix’s “Ripley,” earned his first Primetime Emmy nod. The Oscar winning Dp (“There Will Be Blood”) sat down for Variety’s Inside the Frame series and explained how he wanted to get inside Tom Ripley’s (Andrew Scott) mind and give the series a painterly effect.

Atwood was joined by her fellow artisans from the Apple TV+ series: supervising sound editor and re-recording mixer Michael Minkler, composer Blake Neely, director of photography Richard Rutkowski and music supervisor Deva Anderson. The panelists acknowledged the 80th anniversary of D-Day with Neely sharing news. “I just found out that a piece from ‘Masters of the Air’ is what opened the D-Day Normandy event,” he told his fellow department heads.

Why Movie Musicals Often Wind Up With Oscar Wins
Image
Even before an iconic distant whistle opened the first screenings of Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story, it was clear that musicals would factor into this year’s Oscar race.

Hollywood loves musicals, and the classic 1961 West Side Story, directed by Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins, is the most honored in the genre, winning 10 Oscars, including best picture and director, plus crafts awards like cinematography, music and sound. “Look at West Side Story, All That Jazz, Singin’ in the Rain. Those are really good stories, great performances and music — these are well-crafted movies,” says recording mixer Michael Minkler, who is ...

It has been another strange and uncertain year for Hollywood, with the pandemic hitting cinemas hard and streaming services rising to hold the fort. It has also been a year in which we’ve seen a growing diversity in front of, and behind the camera, with an increasing focus on new voices and new stories being told.

Last year saw Bong Joon-ho ‘s Parasite achieve Oscar greatness and, for a brief pre-covid moment, it seemed that the world of cinema was beginning to embrace a wider world. The 2021 BAFTAs showed signs this was continuing with Minari, Another Round and Promising Young Woman taking home a clutch of awards each.

This year’s American Academy Awards will be a strange affair, certainly one to remember.

Here is the full list of nominations with Winners in bold.

Oscars 2021 Winners: The Complete List
Image
The biggest night in Hollywood has brought a new crop of Oscar Winners, with the 93rd Annual Academy Awards happening at Union Station in Los Angeles and the Dolby Theatre at the Hollywood & Highland Center earlier tonight. It was a much different year for the legendary awards ceremony, following a prolonged lockdown during a pandemic that shut down most theaters in America. That didn't stop some excellent movies from being released over the course of the past twelve months. And they were celebrated accordingly.

ABC and Disney celebrated movie theaters and moviegoing throughout the telecast, with talent from impending releases sharing their favorite moviegoing experiences, while also debuting trailers for big releases such as Steven Spielberg's West Side Story remake, Lin-Manuel Miranda's summer musical In the Heights and Questlove's Hulu documentary Summer of Soul.

But what movie fans really came for was the big Oscars categories, to...

2021 Oscars: Best Sound nominees include 2 past champs, 7 veterans and 10 rookies
Image
Ahead of this year’s Oscars, the academy made the decision to merge the Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing categories into one: Best Sound. The films in contention for this new award are “Greyhound,” “Mank,” “News of the World,” “Soul,” and “Sound of Metal.” Our current odds indicate that “Sound of Metal” (31/10) will take the prize, followed in order by “Soul” (39/10), “Mank” (9/2), “Greyhound” (9/2), and “News of the World” (9/2).

The individuals included in the current lineup have amassed a total of 34 nominations for their sound work in 30 films. “Sound of Metal” is the only film of the five that does not include any previous Oscar nominees on its sound team. Its first-time contenders are: Jaime Baksht, Nicolas Becker, Philip Bladh, Carlos Cortés and Michelle Couttolenc.

“Sound of Metal” and “Mank” now hold the distinction of being the first films recognized in a sound category with five credited team members each.

Oscars 2021: Best Sound Predictions
Image
For the first time in decades, the Academy has merged sound editing and sound mixing into a single category because of persistent overlap, and this season offers five exemplary nominees: the experimental “Sound of Metal,” “Mank,” and “Soul,” the rugged western soundscape of “News of the World,” and the explosive sounds of World War II battleships in “Greyhound” (the latter two starring Tom Hanks).

But Darius Marder’s “Sound of Metal,” in which Riz Ahmed portrays Ruben, a heavy-metal drummer losing his hearing, is the favorite to win the Oscar for its complexity and detail. Although the film was snubbed at the Mpse Golden Reel Awards, it rebounded to take the Cas sound mixing prize. This is a film about sound because of the way it explores deafness as a way of experiencing sound and vibration. Getting inside Ruben’s head creates the dichotomy between “omniscient sound and perspective sound,...

‘Sound of Metal’ and ‘The Trial of the Chicago 7’ Split the Mpse Golden Reel and Cas Sound Awards
Image
Darius Marder’s experimental “Sound of Metal” — the Oscar favorite for Best Sound — was surprisingly snubbed at the 68th annual Mpse Golden Reel Awards for sound editing on Friday, but it rebounded on Saturday to take sound mixing honors at the 57th annual Cas Awards. The sound editors presented a three-way split between Aaron Sorkin’s multi-layered courtroom drama, “The Trial of the Chicago 7” (dialogue/Adr), “Greyhound,” the World War II battleship action/adventure (effects/foley), which is an Oscar sound nominee, and Christopher Nolan’s time-inverted “Tenet” (underscore). Pixar’s “Soul,” which took the Golden Reel for animation, is also in the Oscar hunt for sound. However, the other two Oscar nominees — “Mank” and “News of the World” — were completely shut out.

Ironically, the primary reason the Academy consolidated sound editing and mixing into one category this season was due to increased overlap in recent years. However, despite...

John David Washington in Tenet (2020)
‘Greyhound,’ ‘Tenet’ Win at Motion Picture Sound Editors’ Golden Reel Awards
John David Washington in Tenet (2020)
“Tenet,” “Eurovision Song Contest,” “The Trial of the Chicago 7” and “Greyhound” have won feature-film awards at the Motion Picture Sound Editors Mpse Golden Reel Awards, which took place on Friday evening in a virtual event.

The Mpse divides the art of sound editing into several different categories, with “Tenet” winning for underscore, “Eurovision Song Contest” for music, “The Trial of the Chicago 7” for dialogue/Adr and “Greyhound” for effects/foley.

In the past, the last of those categories has most closely corresponded to the Academy Award for Best Sound Editing — but that Oscar category was merged with the Best Sound Mixing category into a single Best Sound category this year. “Greyhound” is nominated in that category, along with “Soul,” “Mank,” “News of the World” and “Sound of Metal.”

“Soul” won for sound editing in an animated feature, while “The Eight Hundred” won for a foreign-language feature and “The Reason I Jump...

BAFTA Film Awards 2021: ‘Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom’ Picks Up Two Awards on Opening Night
Image
“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” was the big winner on the opening night of the 2021 BAFTA Film Awards, taking home two golden masks from a possible two.

Night 1, hosted virtually by radio and TV presenter Clara Amfo, was a mostly craft-centered affair which also yielded wins for “Mank,” “Tenet” and “Sound of Metal.”

The first show was originally scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. local time, but according to sources the BBC made a late decision to push the broadcast by an hour. Amfo opened the show by reading a tribute to Prince Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh, who died Friday at the age of 99.

“On behalf of BAFTA, we are extremely saddened by the passing of His Royal Highness Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, on Friday. The Duke was BAFTA’s very first president over 60 years ago and was the first of a line of royal patronage all...

How the ‘Greyhound’ Team Layered the Sounds of Propellers, Guns and Spraying Surf for a Key Battle Scene
Image
World War II adventure “Greyhound,” now streaming on Apple TV Plus, takes place on a battleship in the chill of a North Atlantic winter. Tom Hanks wrote the screenplay and stars in the film about a captain whose ship comes under attack by German U-boats as it crosses what is known as the black pit of the ocean — an area not covered by anti-submarine aircraft.

For rerecording mixer Michael Minkler, supervising sound editor Warren Shaw and sound mixer David Wyman, who have been Oscar-nominated for their work on the film, the job was to put the audience in the middle of the action and give the actors a work-friendly environment in which to perform.

In a third-act climactic sequence, the destroyer, code-named Greyhound, comes close to a U-boat and has to make a sharp turn to avoid being hit by torpedoes while defending another ship. The sequence runs five minutes long,...

Tom Hanks at an event for Larry Crowne (2011)
What Does a Torpedo Sound Like? Watch a ‘Greyhound’ Scene With 3 Different Audio Tracks
Tom Hanks at an event for Larry Crowne (2011)
The taut Tom Hanks action film “Greyhound” is set in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean in 1942, as a convoy of battleships dodge enemy torpedos. Practically the entire movie was filmed on sound stages or aboard the docked U.S.S. Kidd in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Visual effects provided the aesthetic reality — but sound effects deliver the visceral, you-are-there quality that makes the scenes whizz and whoosh.

“Greyhound” was rewarded with an Oscar nomination for Best Sound, the first film released by Apple TV+ to receive Oscar attention. (The company’s “Wolfwalkers” was also nominated in the Animated Feature race.) The four sound mixers, Warren Shaw, Michael Minkler, Beau Borders and David Wyman, talked to TheWrap about the aural design of one specific scene, which you can watch below in three different sound versions.

The scene finds Hanks anxiously navigating his gargantuan ship as it is fired upon by two simultaneous torpedos.

‘Greyhound’ Oscar-nominated sound team: ‘The peril never stops’ [Exclusive Video Interview]
Image
“The whole movie was about keeping it moving. The peril never stops,” reveals “Greyhound” supervising sound editor Michael Minkler. Sound mixer David Wyman adds, “So much of it was in the undertow of getting the performances from the actors.” The sound duo joined us recently for an exclusive webchat (watch the video above).

The Apple TV+ film is set in World War II, telling the story of Navy Commander Krause (Tom Hanks) on his first wartime mission. Being hunted by Germans, his ship gets entangled in the Battle of the Atlantic. Minkler explains, “These people had a relatively small amount of time to get across the sea in the zone without any air cover, while being stalked by dozens of U-boats. It was a terrifying experience. The music is driving the intensity and fear, then you turn over the sound effects; something that changes the amount of danger. In the midst of battle,...

Cas Sound Mixing Nominations Include ‘Sound of Metal,’ ‘Mank,’ ‘News of the World’
Image
The live-action feature nominees for the 57th annual Cas Awards for sound mixing (presented virtually on April 17) include “Greyhound,” “Mank,” “News of the World,” “Sound of Metal,” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7.” Darius Marder’s innovative “Sound of Metal,” the frontrunner, also split the Motion Picture Sound Editors nominations with Paul Greengrass’ “News of the World,” with three nods.

Not making the cut, though, was Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet,” the time inversion spy thriller, which was roundly criticized for mixing its dialogue way too low. Also overlooked was George Clooney’s sci-fi drama, “The Midnight Sky,” though the director will be honored as Cas Filmmaker.

In terms of the Oscar race, the Academy has consolidated sound editing and mixing onto a single category for the first time this season.

Seven-time Oscar-nominated sound mixer William B. Kaplan is this year’s Cas Career Achievement Honoree.

Rob Zombie Shares New Three From Hell Photos As The Film Nears Completion
In recent months, Rob Zombie has been taking to Instagram on a pretty regular basis to share images and updates for his next movie, Three From Hell. In just this last week, however, the director has seriously upped the frequency of his posts, bringing us one image for every day of the sound mixing process.

The fresh wave of photos started last week, with a pic from the mixing room that showed a fictionalized news report up on the screen. “Day 2” then followed with a photo offering another glimpse at Sheri Moon Zombie, who reprises her role as Vera-Ellen “Baby” Firefly from House of 1000 Corpses and The Devil’s Rejects. After that, Day 3 brought us an image of Zombie regular Richard Brake as Winslow Foxworth Coltrane, followed on Day 4 by a shot of Jeff Daniel Phillips as Warden Virgil Dallas Harper. Lastly, a still of Do the Right Thing star Richard Edson dropped yesterday,...

Three From Hell Is Not Being Released On Halloween
Rob Zombie has been consistently active on social media in recent months to offer updates and photos from the making of his next movie, Three From Hell. So while the director has yet to announce a release date for his upcoming Devil’s Rejects sequel, he was at least quick to shoot down the rumor that it was set to hit theaters on October 31st.

As the director of two Halloween movies and the Halloween-set horror flick 31, Zombie is arguably overdue to release a film on the actual day, but sadly, it doesn’t sound like Three From Hell will be doing the honors, despite a recent report saying otherwise. Taking to Instagram with another pic from the mixing room, the filmmaker offered the following update:

“Day 2 : mixing 3 From Hell. And on it goes! Fyi the release date is not October 31st. Don’t know who started that rumor.

Three From Hell director Rob Zombie has taken to Instagram once more with another update on his long-awaited sequel to 2005’s The Devil’s Rejects, and it seems that the team has now moved on to the sound mixing stage.

The Lords of Salem helmsman’s latest post includes a behind-the-scenes photo, along with a caption teasing the involvement of a three-time Oscar-winner:

“Day 1 – mixing sound on 3 From Hell. Getting closer to finishing this monster. Fyi our mixer is a triple Academy Award winner who has mixed everything from Star Wars to Inglorious Basterds! So it will definitely sound killer.”

Presumably, Zombie is referring to Michael Minkler, whose more recent jobs have included A Star Is Born and Quentin Tarantino’s next film, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

In the photo, meanwhile, you’ll notice that a fictional news report is being shown up on the screen with a...

Three From Hell Reportedly Set For Halloween Release Date
In the eleven-plus months since principal photography wrapped on Three From Hell, director Rob Zombie has been offering a steady stream of updates and images via social media, but one reveal he’s continued to hold back on is the film’s release date.

But while the Lords of Salem helmsman has yet to make the announcement, Dark Universe: Horror Database has now reported that Zombie’s sequel to 2005’s The Devil’s Rejects is aiming to hit theaters on October 31st, 2019. That’s right, the director of two Halloween movies may finally be releasing one of his horror films on the actual day.

So far, we’ve yet to receive any official confirmation that this is the case, so perhaps it’s best not to mark your diaries just yet. Still, given how active Zombie has been on Instagram these days, surely he can only go so long before...

Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga in A Star Is Born (2018)
Oscar Voters Are Sure to Go Gaga for Bradley Cooper’s ‘A Star Is Born’
Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga in A Star Is Born (2018)
It might seem like an impossible feat, but with his version of “A Star Is Born,” Bradley Cooper both puts a fresh spin on a decades-old movie staple and transcends its very place in cinema history by fixing the story, turning a classic role, finally, into a tragic figure you actually care about.

Cooper is that good as the kind-hearted but haunted Jackson Maine, and the screenplay — from Cooper, Will Fetters, and Oscar winner Eric Roth — finely tunes his story, serving the character far better than any previous version of the tale has for Fredric March and James Mason’s Norman Maine, or Kris Kristofferson’s John Norman Howard.

That you can get two paragraphs into spelling out the virtues of this film...

Oscar Winner Michael Minkler Partners With Pace (Exclusive)
Michael Minkler
Sound vet Michael Minkler — who won Oscars as a rerecording mixer on Dreamgirls, Chicago and Black Hawk Down — has become a partner in production services firm Pace. This first order of business: an expansion in sound by designing the company's first Dolby Atmos mixing theater, which is now operational.

It's part of a larger growth strategy for Pace and its production service partner IgnitedSpaces. In early 2017, Heath Ryan-led Pace moved its operations (it previously has small spaces in Westwood and Studio City) to IgnitedSpaces’ now 45,000 sq. foot facility, which is a stone’s throw from Hollywood & Highland. The...
