Welcome to another installment of Movies to Show My Son. This is the blog series were I discuss movies I can’t way to show my son in the future. I’ll be covering my own personal experience with the movie, movie and life lessons I hope he will learn, and lastly my concerns about showing said film. This week’s film is The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters.
Personal Memories:
With this movie being only ten years old I do not have the same type of personal attachment to it as something like The Sandlot. It was one of the first movies I remember watching on a streaming service before they completely took over. It was at a time when Netflix only gave you so many movies to stream a month (insane thinking about that now) and one of those months I chose to watch The King of Kong.

After narrowing the Oscar documentary feature shortlist to five at the 87th Academy Award nominations Jan. 15, a number of notable exclusions were featured, particularly Al Hicks‘ Keep on Keepin’ On, which documents the mentorship and friendship of a jazz legend and a blind piano prodigy, and Steve James‘ Life Itself, about the life and career of famed film critic Roger Ebert. (James is no stranger to snubs and the exclusion of his 1994 film Hoop Dreams led to rule reform within the documentary category.) Both films hold 97 percent positive ratings on Rotten Tomatoes.
Some films surprised when they didn’t even land a spot on the shortlist, such as Red Army, which examines the rise and fall of the Soviet Union’s hockey team from the perspective of its coach. That film holds a 100 percent positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

With Danny Dyer coming into Walford as new Queen Vic landlord Mick Carter, the mockney archetype has sparked a lot of opinion from various forum sites and social media. The votes seem to be split 50/50 with some expressing their love for his working-class nature and the rest dubbing him ‘Danny Dire’. To be fair, he has previously been criticized to limiting himself to the same cockney role in TV shows such as Skins or films like The Football Factory. However, this may work in his favour – he certainly won’t be out of his depth as he will be playing the same role he has become famous for – The working-class cockney, with a different angle from the writers of the successful soap of course.
The criticism of Dyer leading quite a narrow career in terms of acting roles overall, could be seen as irrelevant – Eastenders is full of ‘cockney geezers...

Documentaries live and die on the strength of their characters. Think about some of the most memorable docs in recent years; Billy Mitchell in King of Kong, Steve "Lips" Kudlow in Anvil: The Story of Anvil, or the soldiers of Op Restrepo. Each of these movies takes us into the lives of characters so remarkable, in some cases it's difficult to believe they aren't figments of a talented screenwriter's imagination. But it's the capture and vivid depiction of the too-good-to-be-true characters that ignites a narrative and makes a documentary really shine. This is absolutely the case in Josh Greenbaum's youth golf documentary The Short Game. Packed with some of the most charming seven and eight year-olds ever captured, Greenbaum takes us into their lives...

Wreck-It Ralph (now on Blu-Ray and DVD) was one of my favorite movies of 2012, and though talks of a sequel have been brewing ever since its release, Disney is continuing the story in a more unique way first. They've released a thirty minute short online called Garlan Hulse: Where Potential Lives," a fake King of Kong-style documentary about the kid who once held the high score on the arcade version of Fix-It Felix Jr. game before it was overtaken by a Billy Mitchell-type rival. Ralph director Rich Moore hosts this live action tale, and if you're a fan of both Wreck-It Ralph and King of Kong, this is a must-watch. Watch it! Here's the full fake documentary Garlan Hulse: Where Potential Lives, found via Movies.com: Rich Moore (watch our interview with him here) has helmed episodes of "Futurama" and "The Simpsons" and directed Wreck-It Ralph, the story of...

A long standing and highly prestigious record was almost broken this week in the world of video gaming as Quebec gamer, body builder and World of Warcraft aficionado Vincent Lemay came within inches of usurping the current King of Kong Hank Chien’s top score.
With a score of 1,135,900 the 21 year old gamer finished a mere 2,700 points short of Chien’s record making him the second highest scoring Donkey Kong player of all time, way ahead of long time former champion (and alleged cheater) Billy Mitchell.
The highly competitive world of vintage arcade video gaming was brought to the attention of the world following the release of the 2007 documentary King of Kong – A Fistful of Quarters. In the film, then top dog Billy Wilder is treated like a God amongst men as he somewhat questionably defends his crown as the top dog in coin operated gaming.

He is looking to hire a new apprentice from the Square, but whether he will be impressed by any of the candidates remains to be seen. Photo gallery - Lord Sugar visits Albert Square:

If you loved the battle between Steve Wiebe and Billy Mitchell in the documentary King of Kong, and have found yourself clamoring for the two to go head-to-head in another battle for video game supremacy, then yesterday was your lucky day. Disney got the two competitive gaming titans together (Wiebe in Seattle, Mitchell in Miami) for a showdown – but the battle wasn’t waged over Donkey Kong. Instead, these two master gamers fought to become the best Fix-It Felix Jr. player in the world. For those not up to speed, Fix-It Felix Jr. is the game at the heart of Disney’s latest animated feature, Wreck-It Ralph. In the film, the game’s “villain” (John C. Reilly) hops from one game to another after he gets tired of always being the bad guy. He then...

Documentary and video game fans alike were already on the edge of their seat watching King of Kong, a chronicle of the competition between gamers Steve Wiebe and Billy Mitchell to achieve the world record high score on the original Donkey Kong arcade game. That battle still continues to this day, but Wiebe took some time away from Donkey Kong to do battle with a soon-to-be-famous video game. Farrell Uses Donkey Kong Champ For Horrible Bosses Inspiration
Colin Farrell had an odd inspiration for his new role as a terrible boss - a Donkey Kong videogame champion.
Horrible Bosses director Seth Gordon sent the Irishman a copy of his hit documentary King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters, which chronicles the lives of die-hard gamers who compete for world records, to get into character as obnoxious Bobby Pellitt.
Gordon admits he wanted the character to look like Donkey Kong champion Billy Mitchell.
He tells WENN, "I think not only the wardrobe, the posture and the confidence, and being stuck in the '80s were influenced in some way by Billy. It was wonderful that Colin was open to the role and really breathed life into it.
"At the first meeting, we talked about giving him a belly and a clubbing enthusiasm - and Colin wanted a comb-over. As soon as we saw the first attempt at that I knew it was right. You should have seen all the takes that Colin did. It was like channelling a demon."...

Danielle Harold joins Eastenders. Co BBC
Up and coming actress Danielle Harold is set to join the cast of Eastenders as the long lost, or rather – never before heard about – granddaughter of Billy Mitchell. It was inevitable that Executive producer Bryan Kirkwood would find a long lost relative to join the Mitchell clan after introducing a bunch of estranged relatives to the Square in recent months. First came Anne Mitchell as Tanya’s Mum, then David Essex as Aflie’s uncle and only two weeks ago we heard that Polly Perkins is set to join the cast as Dot’s sister. Ian Beale is in need of some loving so maybe his long lost fair Godmother will be next to arrive in the square.
18 year old Danielle will play 15 year old Lola, who is living in care when she is found by her grandparents Billy and Julie. The character is described as sharp and cocky.

Lars von Trier has caused quite the stir over controversial comments he made at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival. He's been condemned by Cannes officials and now he's getting similar abuse from film industry peers on Twitter, with a heaping amount of tongue-in-cheek jabs coming from Eli Roth.
In more pleasant news, the world got its first look at Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen in "The Hunger Games" yesterday, and one of her co-stars — Elizabeth Banks, who plays Effie Trinket — was especially blown away by Lawrence's new look.
I'm @roundhoward and there's all that and more in today's Twitter-Wood for May 19, 2011.
Lars Von Trier, Part 1: @sutterink Dear Lars Von Trier, we appreciate your honesty, but Fyi, "i'm a nazi and i'm proud"... still too soon.
-Kurt Sutter, writer ("Sons of Anarchy")
Lars Von Trier, Part 2: @ebertchicago If Kirsten Dunst's looks could kill, Lars von Trier would now resting in the Cannes mortuary.

If you've ever wanted to eat a bunch of dots while running through a maze, you may soon have your chance. Merv Griffin Entertainment, the company behind Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy, has teamed with Namco Bandai Games America to develop a reality game show based on the popular video game [1] Pac-Man. Incidentally, did you know the original name for Pac-Man was Puck-Man? Read more after the jump. Roy Bank, Merv's head of Television described the show to Deadline as follows [2]: A big, crazy Wipeout-type event with a lot of energy. The idea we have is to take what Pac-Man is and bring it to life, to bring what is essentially the world's biggest game of tag to television. This won't be Pac-Man's first trip to television. He actually did make it to TV once before, in 1982 and 1983 as an animated cartoon series. Here's what the opening of the show looked like.

"If I was in public seven days a week, six out of seven days people came up to me, they recognized me, asked me for autographs...and now the movies have been out it's seven out of seven days."
I guess in the mind of Billy Mitchell, King of Kong needed him more than he needed King of Kong to raise his celebrity status. I've never heard of this guy before the movie so maybe I'm the seventh out of the week, though I'm not sure if I would go up to him for an autograph.

Nintendo recently released "Donkey Kong Country Returns" for the Wii and apparently included an Easter Egg in world 3-2 of the game to honor Billy Mitchell. Mitchell appeared in the 2007 documentary "The King of Kong: Fistful of Quarters" in which he battled Steve Wiebe to become the champion of the original "Donkey Kong" game. He is known for being cocky and patriotic and is often seen wearing an American flag tie. So in the game, one of the ruins is made to look like his tie. Check out the photos below.
