Whether you know her as Tatum Riley from Scream, Pam from Death Proof, Paige Matthews from Charmed, or her work behind the camera on her short film, Dawn, Rose McGowan is a creative force in the horror genre, and her latest starring role, as paranormal investigator (and skeptic) Kelly in The Sound, is no exception. The Sound trailer shows the unusual team-up of Rose McGowan and Christopher Lloyd as paranormal investigators.
While The Conjuring films may have rejuvenated the box office viability of the paranormal horror genre, a smaller scale movie, called The Sound, comes to the table with something unique: Rose McGowan and Christopher Llloyd teaming up to battle a malevolent spirit.
Video of The Sound Official Trailer
The Sound trailer centres on McGowan’s Kelly Johansen, a passionate skeptic of the paranormal who, armed with an expertise in acoustics, utilises soundwaves as the primary tool of reports that she posts online. However, the debunking activities lead her to a case in an abandoned subway – built on a graveyard – in which a purportedly hoaxed suicide occurred 40 years earlier.
Ironically, the case not only uncovers paranormal proof, but makes Kelly the target of a malevolent spirit, forcing her to see disturbing imagery and memories.

Another title just added to the 2013 Toronto Film Festival is Denis Villeneuve's Enemy based on "The Double" by Nobel Laureate Jose Saramago and the first picture has just been sent over featuring star Jake Gyllenhaal. Enemy explores the troubled psyche of a man who is torn between his mistress and his wife and as the picture above shoes, Gyllenhaal plays dual roles in this one, both Adam and Anthony -- a man and his double. Melanie Laurent, Isabella Rossellini, Sarah Gadon, Stephen R. Hart and Jane Moffat co-star. You can get more information on the plot if you read the Wikipedia entry for Saramago's 2002 novel. This is the second film for Villeneuve and Gyllenhaal in the festival as the thriller Prisoners will also be premiering at the fest, which is already set for a September 20 release from Warner Bros. and co-stars Hugh Jackman.

Like most horror fans, I await any film with Guillermo del Toro's name attached to it. The man knows and loves the genre and has a deep respect for its fans. So, because del Toro is "presenting" the new film Mama, I went in wanting to love it. But the flick is so bloated with pointless scenes, superficial characters and cheap jump scares, it never generates any sense of suspense or fear.
Mama is set during the recent stock market collapse, after Jeffrey (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau), whose firm is suffering heavy losses, shoots several people at his office. He flees to the home of his estranged wife, kills her and drives off with their two daughters, Victoria and Lilly.
On an ice-covered mountain pass, Jeffrey loses control of the car,...

From The Wild Child to Nell, the movies have long told stories of children found in the woods raised by animals but the title creature that rears the little girls in the new horror film Mama is meaner than a snake and uglier than Martin Lawrence in drag. Moviegoers looking for a scary time at the movies without the gore could do worse than Mama, a PG13 shocker from producer Guillermo del Toro. It’s an engrossing, if modest exercise in thrills that works hard to present an intelligent and unique premise. Mama opens strong but falls apart in its underdeveloped second half with scares manufactured from cliches and an overdramatic climax.
Mama is a throwback fairy-tale style horror film with a less-is-more approach to its violence, yet it opens ugly with a man abducting his two young daughters and preparing to shoot them in the back of their heads.

Title: Mama Directed By: Andrés Muschietti Starring: Jessica Chastain, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Megan Charpentier, Isabelle Nélisse, Daniel Kash, Jane Moffat The short that inspired “Mama” is an impressive piece with chilling imagery and a good deal of suspense, but it isn’t a story. It’s more of a single scare and while writer-director Andrés Muschietti and his team do honor that single scare, their attempt to expand upon it results in a handful of less successful permutations connected by a clunky narrative. In the midst of a financial crisis, Victoria and Lilly’s father whisks them away from their quaint suburban home and takes them to a remote cabin the woods, a place [ Read More ]
