Hong Kong immigrant filmmaker Wayne Wang is best known for films like his indie breakout “Chan Is Missing” or his break into Hollywood filmmaking with Amy Tan’s “Joy Luck Club” adaptation. But he stoked controversy in 1990 when his crime drama “Life Is Cheap… But Toilet Paper Is Expensive” earned an X rating from the then-mpaa.
Its distributor rejected that rating and released it unrated, with critics including Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert applauding that decision and praising its merits as greater than the sum of its controversies. Still, the film’s graphic footage, while politically motivated, subverts audience expectations of sex and violence.
Structured around a neo-noir set-up — smoky rooms, mob bosses, and a femme fatale abound — “Life Is Cheap” melds guerrilla docu-fiction with political urgency. Not to mention the vivid imagery courtesy of Dp Amir Mokri, who has since worked on films including the “Transformers” and “Bad Boys” franchises.

‘Feel the Beat’s’ Wolfgang Novogratz with Elissa Down.
Elissa Down’s teen dance movie Feel the Beat premieres worldwide on Netflix this week. Sofia Carson stars as April, a self-centred dancer who, after blowing a Broadway audition, reluctantly returns home and agrees to coach a squad of young misfits for a big competition.
The director tells If how she landed her first Netflix gig, which was produced by What Women Want’s Susan Cartsonis; collaborating with fellow Aussies, composer Michael Yezerski and editor Jane Moran; and how her career has ebbed and flowed since her debut film The Black Balloon.
Q: How did you get the gig?
A: I met with producer Susan Cartsonis to discuss the project and we connected right away. Susan responded to the vision I had for the movie and she then presented me to Netflix to pitch – which had to be done over Google...

Loosely inspired by true events, and particularly an article by Michael Dorgan, which was first published on Official Karate in 1980, “Birth of the Dragon” attempts a recreation of the events that led to the infamous fight between Bruce Lee and Wong Jack Man in San Francisco, in 1964.
Birth of The Dragon is being released in UK cinemas from Altitude Film Entertainment, starting February 23rd
At the time the film takes place, 24-year-old Bruce Lee owns and operates a martial arts school, and is on the verge of making a break into the show business, with “Green Hornet”. He is hip, cocky, and willing to go to extremes to introduce himself and kung fu to the world. However, everything changes when Wong Jack Man, a Buddhist monk who is also a martial arts master and a man, who, according to Lee, can unravel everything he has accomplished, arrives in town. Lee...

Biopics never have a firm grasp on the truth, and any reasonably intelligent moviegoer understands this. Often, it’s obvious (merely by watching) what’s fact and what’s fantasy and it doesn’t hinder our enjoyment. In George Nolfi’s Birth of the Dragon, facts are kicked into the dirt of gangster-ridden Chinatown.
Set nine years before the release of Enter the Dragon, a young Bruce Lee (Philip Ng) is a martial-arts teacher (known as a sifu) in San Francisco. He is performative and egotistical, eager to introduce kung-fu to the Western world. But when Wong Jack Man (Xiu Yu) arrives in San Francisco, as penance for a sin committed in China, he threatens Lee’s aspirations – believing kung-fu shouldn’t be taught to Westerners. This builds to the famous (real) fight between the two of them – the results from which remain ambiguous.

Just a couple of days back, we had reported that the Azhar star Emraan Hashmi would soon be turning producer. Well now we hear that Emraan who has already commenced work on his debut production venture has roped in the Fast & Furious cinematographer Amir Mokri for his film. While there were reports that the acclaimed Iranian cinematographer, Amir Mokri who has worked on films like Fast & Furious, Transformers: Dark Of The Moon and Man Of Steel (2013), to name a few, was to join Tony D'Souza's Azhar, he dropped out citing date issues. However, considering that Emraan is setting up his production banner Emraan Hashmi Films in collaboration with Tony, the duo approached Mokri to come on board for their maiden venture. Though Emraan is in the process of finalizing two scripts, the actor is currently gearing up for his next release as an actor. As for the production venture...

Ethan Hawke stars in Good Kill, a drama-thriller from Gattaca director Andrew Niccol. Here's Ryan's review of a gripping film...
Writer-director Andrew Niccol is best known for his contribution to the sci-fi genre: In Time, the classic Gattaca and the elegant script for Peter Weir’s The Truman Show to name a few.
Good Kill isn’t a science fiction film, but its premise could easily come from a dystopian novel - or a darkly prophetic story by Philip K Dick.
Ethan Hawke plays Major Thomas Egan, a veteran pilot who controls unmanned aerial vehicles (or drones, as they’re often dubbed by the media) as they circle the skies of the Middle East. At the orders of those higher up the command chain, these drones can strike targets from 10,000km in the air - so high that someone on the ground could look up and not even see the craft gliding above them.

The Hurt Locker producer gives ten tips for producing award-winning films at the right budget.
Voltage Pictures president Nicolas Chartier, producer of The Hurt Locker and executive producer of Dallas Buyers Club, used his keynote speech at the Zurich Summit to offer ten tips for ‘producing award-winning films at the right budget’.
The tongue-in-cheek speech, which went down a storm, included plenty of sage advice.
Chartier agreed to share the speech with Screen and below is the near-entire transcript…

Traveling back from the Toronto Film Festival meant spending a fair amount of time in airports, and in each of those airports, the same revolving barrage of news went by, including discussions of new drone missions over Syria. It made it very unsettling as I had "Good Kill" still bouncing about inside me, one of the last movies I saw at the fest this year, and as timely a film as I could imagine seeing. Written and directed by Andrew Niccol, the film is a close-up character portrait of Tommy Egan, a former fighter jet pilot who has been relocated to a Las Vegas suburban neighborhood. Every day, he reports to a local base where he and his crew file into a small trailer and then spend their shift watching and occasionally killing people on the other side of the world. At the end of their shifts, they get to...

‘Transformers: Age of Extinction’ review: Michael Bay’s latest ‘Transformers’ movie is ‘the least aggravating of a very aggravating lot’ (photo: Nicola Peltz and Jack Reynor in ‘Transformers: Age of Extinction’) Suffice it to say, there are many special effects in the Transformers movies of which Transformers: Age of Extinction is the latest and, get ready for some high praise, the least aggravating of a very aggravating lot. In fact, its greatest special effect, much like the previous three films, is its ability to deflect all criticism; these movies are not just critic proof, they’re quality proof. As long as the Autobots or Decepticons or emoticons or Comic-Cons or whatever they’re called keep laying waste to cities and brain cells, its target audience of global fanboys and Viacom shareholders will be sated and the rest of us can go down with the ship watching some arthouse limited release.

When "Man of Steel" was released this past summer, it didn't feature a key member of director Zack Snyder's creative brain trust: cinematographer Larry Fong, a contemporary of J.J. Abrams' (they grew up together) who furnished Snyder with the almost plastic visuals for "300," "Watchmen" and "Sucker Punch." Fong was replaced by "Transformers: Dark of the Moon" cinematographer Amir Mokri, but that appears to have been a blip: Fong is back for the still-untitled "Man of Steel" sequel that will pit Batman against Superman in a no-holds-barred superhero rumble. And if you like superheroes coming together, wait for the story about how Wolverine was almost in "Spider-Man." Yes, it seems Snyder is in the process of assembling his creative team for the superhero sequel, which begins shooting next year in Detroit. The shoot should last from February until August (good lord), with Snyder directing from another script by David S. Goyer.

According to Super Hero Hype, director Zack Snyder will be reuniting with an old friend for the still-untitled "Man of Steel" sequel. It looks like Larry Fong, cinematographer on previous Snyder films "300," "Watchmen," and "Sucker Punch," will once again turn his eye towards superheroes with 2015's Superman and Batman slug-and/or-hugfest.
This marks one of the first major changes for the sequel, considering that both "Man of Steel's" director (Snyder) and screenwriter (David Goyer) are back for more. Fong, who also acted as director of photography for J.J. Abrams' "Super 8" and this summer's big surprise hit "Now You See Me," replaces "Man of Steel" cinematographer Amir Mokri. Mokri is currently working on "Transformers: Age of Extinction," which could be taking up the bulk of his schedule at the moment.
Whatever your thoughts on "Watchmen," you have to admit that it did look really really good.

It seems Amir Mokri (Transformers: Dark Of The Moon) won't be returning to shoot Man Of Steel 2, as cinematographer Larry Fong's resume at Worldwide Production Agency has been updated to include his involvement in Zack Snyder's Superman Vs Batman themed sequel to this year's Supes reboot. Fong has previously worked with Snyder on 300, Watchmen, and Sucker Punch, and most recently shot Now You See Me and Super 8 for J.J. Abrams. Plot details are still unknown, but Man Of Steel 2 will see Henry Cavill reprise the role of Clark Kent/Superman, with Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne and Diane Lane back on board too. Oh and they'll be joined by some dude from Boston as Batman. Production is expected to begin in February of 2014 in Detroit.

Of the many, many blockbusters due to hit screens next summer, Transformers 4 is, without a doubt, one of the biggest.
Having got the green light from Paramount to helm this year’s hit, Pain & Gain, Michael Bay has in turn returned to the helm for the fourth instalment in the franchise, and he’s assembled a stellar new cast to do it with.
Mark Wahlberg is reuniting with his Pain & Gain helmer for the upcoming Transformers 4, and Bay took to his site last week to share the first official photo from the set, sharing a glimpse at Wahlberg alongside co-star Jack Reynor and a handful of the crew, including Bay himself.
Little is known about the plot, but it is known that the sequel will take place four years on from the events of Transformers: Dark of the Moon, and that it will be the launching point for a new trilogy.

If Pacific Rim didn’t feature enough giant robot action to fill the hole in your heart left by the absence of a Michael Bay special-effects extravaganza this summer, you’ll be gratified to know that the next entry in Bay’s massively successful Transformers franchise is on the way.

Michael Bay has delivered the first official image from Transformers 4 (via Michael Bay.com). And from the Irish point of view its rather special because it features the first image of Jack Reynor (next to Mark Wahlberg). Not much is known of the plot besides this bit on IMDb A mechanic and his daughter make a discovery that brings down Autobots and Decepticons - and a paranoid government official - on them. It is known that Reynor plays a character called Shane, and Wahlberg plays Cade. I’d hazard a guess they’re related in some one! James Mangold’s The Wolverine is the first X-Men movie I can heartily recommend without any major reservations.
Given the sheer magnitude of this series in modern popular culture, I am surprised to see myself writing those words, but when I look back at everything the film franchised has produced thus far, I see myself frequently on the edge of satisfaction, without ever once going all the way over. The original Bryan Singer films are good, X2 in particular, but every time I revisit them, I find they hold up less and less; they were absolutely revolutionary for their time, and no one can deny the iconic excellence of the ensemble, but Singer’s movies are uneven and overstuffed, and that only becomes more obvious with the more terrific superhero films we have now to compare them to.
But The Last Stand is, of course, where the real trouble started.

Before Man of Steel, the most interesting non-comics Superman stories have been told in animation. They capture his essence, the magnificence, and power of the character without the limitations of live-action. Even though there was a Warner Bros. television series about his childhood in Smallville and his exploits at the Daily Planet with Lois & Clark, the versions of Superman in both were written to reach a mainstream audience. Thankfully, Man of Steel ditches these aspects of the lore and the compromises made in this reboot help keep the focus on Superman’s emergence and determining how best to take that route, since mankind does not take kindly to anything it doesn’t know or understand. The purpose of this re-imagined origin is to tell the story of an alien attempting to live up to becoming the man his two fathers (and two mothers) believed he would be.

I have seen the future of blockbuster cinema, and the future is Man of Steel.
When audiences flock to theatres this Friday, they will be treated to an experience absolutely unlike anything they have ever seen before. This is not hyperbole. On every level, in every way, by every critical criterion I have to judge the effectiveness of film, and every benchmark of spectacle and wonder I have experienced in my time reviewing movies, Man of Steel is completely, utterly singular. I have never seen anything like it. At once vaster in scope than any superhero movie yet produced, and as intimately, crushingly emotional as any other entry in the genre, Man of Steel speaks in a fresh cinematic language viewers will be largely unaccustomed to. The scale of its action is completely unprecedented, an enormously, viscerally powerful shock to the system, yet in its narrative design and treatment of character,...

From Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures comes “Man of Steel,” starring Henry Cavill (“Immortals,” TV’s “The Tudors”) in the role of Clark Kent/Superman, under the direction of Zack Snyder (“300,” “Watchmen”).
A young boy learns that he has extraordinary powers and is not of this Earth. As a young man, he journeys to discover where he came from and what he was sent here to do. But the hero in him must emerge if he is to save the world from annihilation and become the symbol of hope for all mankind.
The film also stars four-time Oscar nominee Amy Adams (“The Master”) as Daily Planet journalist Lois Lane,...

Don't expect the Dark of the Moon to shed light on any of your car-burning questions about the Transformers plot
Transformers 3 – or Transformers: Dark of the Moon to use its official title – looks set to be one of this year's most successful blockbusters. And now, thanks to the 30-second TV spot that aired during Sunday night's Super Bowl, we've finally got some idea of what it'll actually be about.
The good news is that Transformers 3 won't just be a cynically thoughtless rehash of the previous two outings designed explicitly to pander to the basest desires of teenage boys. On the basis of the Super Bowl spot, it'll actually go out of its way to answer as many questions as possible. Questions like these ...
1) What happened between Transformers 2 and Transformers 3?
Fans of the Transformers franchise will remember that, after a mighty struggle at the end of the last film,...

When Iranian cinematography legend Amir Mokri saw Blue on Oct 9 on the ‘Clint Eastwood Recording Sound Stage No 6’ at the Warner Brothers Studios in Los Angeles, director Anthony(Tony) D’Souza, a huge self-confessed and unabashed fan of Mokri’s work played a little game with Mokri.
Tony quietly let his precious film unfold for his favorite cinematographer and waited for him to recognize the sequence that Tony had shot as per instruction from Mokri in La. Of course Mokri immediately recognized the sequence whose shots were copied from Bad Boys 2 which Mokri had photographed.

Director: Justin Lin

Cinematographer: Amir Mokri
Starring: Paul Walker, Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster
Studio/Run Time: Universal, 106 mins.
Ah, the mysterious soul of the buddy-action movie
At times it’s hard to comprehend the baffling idea that some new, unspoken trend in American culture created the “bromance” as it exists today. Somewhere in between decades of buddy-action movies and that part in 2 Fast 2 Furious where Paul Walker and Tyrese roll around on top of each other in a cloud of dust, there would seem to be a long history of such movies, albeit ones that avoid uncomfortable questions with explosions rather than queasy jokes. If there was ever a doubt, the latest, Fast & Furious, supplies a helpful exchange: “Are you one of those guys who prefers cars to girls?” a nominal female love interest asks one of the heroes. “I appreciate a fine body,...
