- Started his formal film education at Emerson College in Boston and later graduated from the American Film Institute (AFI) with a Master of Fine Arts in Cinematography in 1982.
- Member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences since 1994.
- Has been known throughout his long career for refusing to do any interviews about his work. Many trade magazines featuring articles about the cinematography of movies he has shot have either been run without his input, or have had to be canceled altogether because he would not participate. One of the few exceptions to this came in April 2015, when he was interviewed by Seth Kelley of Variety about Pixels (2015).
