Like Jaws to shark movies and The Exorcist to possession flicks, any dinosaur-related media will inevitably be compared to 1993’s Jurassic Park. While this makes a lot of sense, with Spielberg’s classic bringing the prehistoric beasts to life in new and exciting ways that previous filmmakers could only dream of (and that future filmmakers would struggle to recreate), it also means that some truly interesting dinosaur stories have been overshadowed by Jp‘s legacy.
In the past, I’ve recommended some fun dinosaur films that aren’t Jurassic Park, but today I’d like to discuss something a little less cinematic – Hallmark and Rtl’s forgotten miniseries adaptation of James Gurney’s Dinotopia. So if you’re in the mood to revisit a quintessentially 2000s yarn about shamanistic reptiles and the naive humans that live alongside them, read on to discover why I think this family-oriented production might also appeal to horror fans.

Stephen King's 1987 novel "Misery" is ideally suited for the stage. The novel is about a celebrity author named Paul Sheldon, who is best known for writing sentimental Victorian romances starring a character named Misery Chastain. Paul has just finished his final Misery novel and celebrates by getting drunk. While drunk-driving through the snowy hills of Colorado, he swerves off the road and injured himself in a crash. Paul is rescued by Annie Wilkes, a woman who lives in a very remote cabin in the woods. Annie lays Paul in bed while his body heals, announcing that she is the world's biggest Misery Chastain fan.
This is, of course, Paul's nightmare. He'd rather be anywhere else than locked in a remote cabin with a super-fan. At first, Annie seems merely a little weird. Soon, though, she proves to be angry and controlling. When she learns that Misery dies in the latest novel,...

(Welcome to Best Action Scene Ever, a column dedicated to breaking down the best, most effective action sequences throughout the genre. In this edition, we dive into the final duel in Sam Raimi's blistering, stylistic, and woefully underrated Western "The Quick and the Dead.")
Who expected Sam Raimi's first appearance in this new weekly column to spotlight one of the many brilliant set pieces in either "Spider-Man" or "Spider-Man 2"? While that would've seemed like the safest bet to make, I couldn't help but find myself drawn to a very different (but no less worthy) entry hidden in the acclaimed filmmaker's holster. 1995's "The Quick and the Dead" feels like one of those quintessential underseen gems that younger viewers were more likely to discover only after Raimi returned to the headlines upon helming "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness", but longtime fans have been singing the film's praises...

During the 1990s, there was a brief moment when directors everywhere collectively decided that they were going to make Westerns popular again. From Tombstone to Unforgiven, nostalgic filmmakers pined for the days of operatic shootouts and sweaty protagonists, but that doesn’t mean audiences agreed with them. With a few exceptions, it seemed like the world had in fact moved on from the glory days of Leone and Ford.
The biggest shame is that there were some legitimately thrilling cowboy movies made back then that would have been insanely successful had they been released in another time. My personal favorite of these misfires was Sam Raimi’s tragically underseen Western The Quick and the Dead, a 1995 Sharon Stone vehicle that deserves to be reappraised not only as a satirical pastiche but as a genuinely great example of a classic Western.

Sony Pictures Animation has always been the red-headed stepchild of studio animation arms. They’ve had a few big hits, a few mid-sized hits, and they’ve done a very good job of squeezing every possible penny out of the direct-to-video market with sequels to some of their titles. In the press release they sent out today, Sony made it clear that they’re doubling down on animation. Kristine Belson is the president of Sony Animation, answering directly to Tom Rothman, and she talked about letting artists drive the films they’re planning to make. It’s a pretty safe list overall, with an emphasis on pre-existing properties, and I have a hard time getting my head around how anyone is even remotely artistically moved by the idea of an Emoji movie. Some of the titles had already been announced, but there are new details on those, and some of the announcements were brand-new.

In a move signaling an expansion of its output and increased year-round production across multiple platforms, Sony Pictures Animation announced today its slate through 2018 which includes five theatrical features, three television series and one direct-to-video movie.
Kristine Belson, President of Sony Pictures Animation, says:
"We are meaningfully stepping up our level of production, while creating an environment that fosters the best talent. Our goal is to enlarge our presence in the animation landscape with a uniquely diverse slate, and our strategy to get there is to let artists drive the movies creatively."
Tom Rothman, Chairman of Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group, adds:
"I could not be more proud of the way Kristine Belson has rebuilt Sony Pictures Animation into the boldest home for animation in the industry."

Prince William warned on Tuesday that there will be no African elephants and rhinos left in the wild by the time his daughter Princess Charlotte is 25. The passionate prince, who unveiled a ground-breaking multinational agreement to counter the illegal trafficking of animal parts, said he feared for the future during a stirring speech at Buckingham Palace. "If we allow current trends to continue, there will be no African elephants or rhinos left in the wild by the time my daughter Charlotte reaches her 25th birthday," he said. "The poaching crisis is bringing violence, death and corruption to many vulnerable communities.

Only one of this year’s adapted screenplay nominees isn’t adapted from a book, and that’s Damien Chazelle’s Whiplash, which is adapted from his short film of the same name that took home the jury prize for short film from the 2013 Sundance Film Festival. The other four adaptations all come from books, three non-fiction and one fiction.
American Sniper is based on Chris Kyle’s (portrayed in the film by Bradley Cooper) autobiography of the same name, which he wrote with Scott McEwan and Jim DeFelice.
The Imitation Game is adapted from Alan Turing: The Enigma, written by Andrew Hodges, a mathematician and author. Turing is played by Benedict Cumberbatch in the film.

The new Premier League season will prove to be an interesting challenge to both of these sides. West Ham subverted all expectations last year and finished in an unprecedented 10th position which garnered praise and admiration for Sam Allardyce and the Irons. However, due to the demands of the West Ham faithful, this season will be a tough one for the Hammers as they will be expecting more than last season which could make it very difficult for “Big Sam” to hold on to the hotseat for this season.
As with Cardiff, Malky Mackay’s reputation is currently very respectable after guiding Cardiff who had become the “nearly men” of the Championship to the promised land of the Premiership and will be looking to secure the safety of the Welsh side and follow in the footsteps of bitter rivals Swansea.

A preview of Cardiff’s Premier League season including ‘player to watch’ and position prediction.
Cardiff City
The priority for any promoted club in their first season is consolidation, and of the three promoted clubs, Cardiff are best equipped to maintain their Premier League status. During the close season, they have broken their transfer record twice with the capture of Danish striker Andreas Cornelius for £7.5 million, followed by the arrival of England international, Steven Caulker from Spurs for more than £8 million. They are still in the market for a midfielder and have been credited with an interest in French international Etienne Capoue from Toulouse, having come close to signing Tom Ince from Blackpool.
This kind of investment shows Cardiff are intent on staying at the top table having waited so long to get there and expect further signings before the transfer window slams shut. Steven Caulker is seen as a major coup for the Bluebirds,...

Before you drive across the country, here's a handy formula for building a playlist that won't have you zooming like a maniac:
"The optimum tempo of a song for safe driving should mimic the human heartbeat. This is around 60 to 80 beats per minute."
That's the clinical advice given by Simon Moore, a psychiatry professor in London who was involved in a recent UK study designed to pinpoint which music makes you gun it ("Hey Mama," by the Black Eyed Peas, apparently), and which keeps you remembering to check your blind spot (an innocuous mix of Coldplay, Norah Jones and Bruno Mars singles).
The study, published at Confused.com, tracked four men and four women on solitary 500-mile drives, with the help of a phone app that monitored their driving behavior. After a quiet 250 miles, the drivers spent the second half of the trip listening to playlists representing a specific genre (e.

The Quick and the Dead on Blu-Ray
Main Feature (1H 47M 46S)
Since the first time I first saw this film I have felt that it’s under-rated, not to mention misunderstood. The Quick and the Dead is directed by none other than Sam Raimi, famous for his wonderful gore-filled yet tongue-in-cheek Evil Dead trilogy, so it should come as no surprise that this, too, brings together a variety of genres.
This is of course a Western film and the core of the film stays true to the more common themes found in that genre. There is no doubt which of the characters are the goodies and which are the baddies and even the reformed bad guy causes no upset because you know he is a good guy at heart. This clear-cut approach comes from the earlier and more common Western films from the likes of John Ford in which everything is black and white.

Watchmen—Director’S Cut (Warner Bros.) Director Zack Snyder’s film of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ landmark graphic novel is as worthy an adaptation of a great book that has ever been filmed. In an alternative version of the year 1985, Richard Nixon is serving his third term as President and super heroes have been outlawed by a congressional act, in spite of the fact that two of the most high-profile “masks,” Dr. Manhattan (Billy Cruddup) and The Comedian (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) helped the U.S. win the Vietnam War. When The Comedian is found murdered, many former heroes become concerned that a conspiracy is afoot to assassinate retired costumed crime fighters.
