In 2005 she appeared as a maidservant who died to save the world in an episode of Doctor Who (2005) and so impressed the writer Russell T. Davies that he cast her as the female lead in the spin-off series Torchwood (2006).

Along with Freema Agyeman, John Barrowman, Naoko Mori and Gareth David-Lloyd, she is one of only five actors to play the same character (Gwen Cooper) in both Doctor Who (2005) and Torchwood (2006).

Gave birth to her 1st child at age 31, a daughter Matilda Myles Freegard on November 10, 2009. Child's father is her boyfriend (now husband), Bradley Freegard.
