Beta Film has taken world sales rights to drama series “Other People’s Money,” which will make its world premiere next month in the Berlinale’s Panorama section.

The series centers on Europe’s biggest tax fraud ever. It tells the story of how a criminal network of megarich investors, bankers and lawyers stole €146 billion from European taxpayers.

The showrunner and creator is Jan Schomburg. The producers are Michael Polle at X Filme Creative Pool (“Babylon Berlin”), Ole Søndberg (“Millennium” trilogy) at True Content Entertainment, and Epo-Film. The show is backed by broadcasters Zdf, Dr and New8, which is a group of public broadcasters from northern and western Europe.

“Other People’s Money” is the latest addition to Beta’s Berlinale lineup, headed by the Berlinale’s opening film “The Light” by Tom Tykwer, starring Lars Eidinger and the Panorama world premiere “Cicadas” by Ina Weisse (“The Audition”), starring Nina Hoss.

After several acclaimed shorts, Katrine Brocks’ feature film debut “The Great Silence” (“Den Store Stilhed”) is set to premiere at the San Sebastian Film Festival in competition at the New Directors strand.

The film follows Alma who is about to take her vows as a nun in a Catholic convent, when her estranged brother Erik arrives. His presence unearths a tragedy from their past and with the ceremony approaching, Alma is increasingly haunted by resurfacing trauma.

The cast includes Kristine Kujath Thorp (“Ninjababy”), Elliott Crosset Hove (“Godland”) and Karen-Lise Mynster (“C4”).

The film’s central themes stem from Brocks’ upbringing in a Christian community, where Jesus was the ultimate role model.

The family drama flick will star Morten Hee Andersen in the role of a young man who sells fireworks illegally. The cameras are rolling on Christian Bengtson's debut feature, a family drama entitled Krysantemum. Before working on this film, Bengtson attended the National Film School of Denmark and made several shorts, all of which garnered nominations at the Danish Film Awards. Krysantemum follows a young man called Anders (played by Morten Hee Andersen), who is involved in illegal firework sales. Anders must make amends with his father, Thomas (Henrik Birch), whom he hasn't spoken to for years following a tragedy, as they try to save their family farm. The film has been described as an “explosive” family drama that presents an emotional and thrilling look at a family involved in illegal transportation and sales, and their search for forgiveness. Exclusive: Bankside will launch sales at this week’s virtual AFM on Danish drama Rose from BAFTA-winning director Niels Arden Oplev (The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo). The film is currently shooting in Paris and eastern Denmark.

Starring BAFTA winner Sofie Gråbøl (The Killing), the Danish-language film is set over the course of one week and follows two sisters, Inger and Ellen, and how their relationship is challenged on an anticipated coach trip to Paris.

When Inger announces her struggles with mental health to the group, the sisters are faced with pity from some but discrimination from others. On arrival in Paris, it soon becomes clear that Inger has a hidden agenda concerning a figure from her past, ultimately involving the entire group in her hunt for answers.

Walter Presents has acquired U.K. rights to “When The Dust Settles,” the hit Danish psychological drama series, from Dr Sales.

“When The Dust Settles” tells the story of eight strangers whose lives intertwine in the aftermath of a shocking terrorist attack in a Copenhagen restaurant.

The ten-part series was created by Ida Maria Rydén and Dorte Høgh, the duo behind “Dicte,” for Dr Drama, and directed by up-and-coming helmers such as Milad Alami (“Follow The Money III”), Jeanette

Nordahl (“Wildland”), Iram Haq (“What Will People Say”).

Produced by Stinna Lassen, Jacob Lohmann (“Follow The Money”), Henning Jensen (“The Killing”) and Peter Christoffersen (“The Bridge”).

The Norwegian Film Institute has joined the project with funding.

The new adaptation of Swedish period drama The Emigrants is set to be directed by Erik Poppe who will replace long-attached filmmaker Daniel Espinosa, who left the project because of schedule conflicts.

Espinosa was first announced as the director of the literary adaptation in 2015. But the Swedish director, who wrapped shooting on Marvel superhero film Morbius in June, has since stepped down.

He has been replaced with Norwegian director Poppe, whose credits include The King’s Choice and Utoya - July 22.

Goteborg, Sweden — After “Borgen” and “Ride Upon the Storm,” Dr Drama’s next ambitious show is a fictional-character driven drama set against a terror attack in a Copenhagen restaurant. Penned by “Dicte” co-creators Ida Maria Rydén and Dorte W. Høgh, the series explores the lives of eight characters before and after the attack, and how their lives and fates interweave.

“When the Dust Settles” will be pitched at Göteborg’s TV Drama Vision (Jan. 30-31) as a work in progress.

Inspired by Altman’s “Short Cuts,” “When the Dust Settles” is among the first multi-plot structured Danish shows. “The Team”’s Stinna Lassen is producing for Dr Drama. Conducting the show is concept director Milad Alami.

“First I found the story to have believable characters; they felt like real people you pass on the street, with diverse social background, sexual orientation, race and age. Alami told Variety, explaining why he was on board.

“That Time of Year” refers to Christmas, and it is a given in Danish thesp Paprika Steen’s third directorial feature that the togetherness holidays force on us are a holy pain in the arse, with or without Baby Jesus. That “Families are the best… and the worst!” stance feels more than a bit pat in a dramedy whose crises and insufferable behaviors have a well-made-play calculation even as they’re meant to capture emotional messiness. Nevertheless, this mix of sour comedy and default sentimentality should have some appeal in Scandinavia, where the actors’ familiarity will be a lure. Farther afield, it may stir lesser interest as a foreign-language piece too mainstream, and not original or subtle enough, for art-house audiences.
