Sad news, as reports have surfaced that actress, Esta TerBlanche, who played Gillian Andrassy Lavery on the ABC soap, All My Children (AMC) has died at the age of 51.

Lisa Rodrigo, TerBlanche’s publicist, confirmed the actress’s passing via Facebook. She wrote, “I cannot believe I am posting this. It’s with a heavy heart that my friend and client Esta TerBlanche passed away Thursday of natural causes. An autopsy report is pending.

I am still processing and in shock. Esta was a beautiful soul in and out. I was proud to know her and work with her. More to come in the days ahead. Thank you for the messages so far. If I haven’t gotten to you, I will soon. May she Rip with the angels that she is.”

Brett Hadley, who starred as Genoa City police detective Carl Williams for more than a decade on the CBS soap opera “The Young and the Restless”, has died. He was 92.

Hadley died Wednesday, according to a Facebook post from his friend, Mary Ann Halpin.

“He has been my friend since I was 19 [y]ears old. We were in an acting class and were the bad kids in the class. It’s been a particularly rough year with over 100 deaths of prominent actors and actresses who were likely members of SAG/AFTRA. Show producers typically are able to include approximately 40-50 people in a tribute. The 2021 segment saluted 55 people because they had responsibility for 14 months instead of 12.

Michael Nader wrote the script for one of the more interesting and overlooked monster films of the last couple of years, Head Count. Now he’s back with The Toll, which he not only wrote but is the first feature he’s directed after several shorts.

The Toll is the latest entry in the “ride share from hell” genre that includes the likes of Spree, Ryde and Driven. And like the last of those films, this one has a supernatural edge to it that separates it from the majority of these films which rely exclusively on all to human monsters.

Described as "supernatural terror and spine-tingling suspense", this is one of the latest "ride-sharing horror thriller" films, but not in the usual way as things get creepy only once they arrive. A socially awkward driver and a weary passenger they try to make it to their destination while being haunted by a supernatural threat. Each of these elements, ably handled, might exude a concrete scary resonance. But what are they all doing in the same horror movie? Originally slated to premiere this month at the 2020 SXSW Film Festival, The Toll from writer/director Michael Nader was able to enjoy a virtual premiere on Sunday night, allowing indie genre fans the opportunity to get to see the film despite everything going on in the world right now. Next month, the 2020 SXSW Film Festival kicks off in Austin, Texas, and this week, we finally have a look at the fest’s killer Midnighter slate, which includes one of this writer’s favorite films from Sundance, Natalie Erika James’ Relic. The 2020 lineup also features another Sundance 2020 title, Run Sweetheart Run, as well the latest from filmmaker Natasha Kermani (who recently helmed Imitation Girl), entitled Lucky, and The Void co-director Steven Kostanski’s latest gore-fest, PG (Psycho Goreman).

After already unveiling its initial roster of films, SXSW has now announced its lineup of Midnighters, Festival Favorites, Shorts, Episodic Pilots, Special Events and more.

SXSW Midnighters section is a favorite among festival-goers as it includes weird, electric, and sometimes terrifying selection of titles. Featuring 10 genre films, the Midnighters slate includes an array of dark comedies, thrillers, sci-fi, mystery and slasher pics with a mix of established and first-time filmmakers. With Midnighters and addition of Festival Favorites as well as 10 additional film, the SXSW Film Festival now has a robust 135 total features on its slate.

This year’s program has 135 Feature Films, including 99 world premieres, nine North American premieres, five U.S. Premieres, 75 films from first-time filmmakers, and 119 short films. The lineup also features music videos, episodic premieres, pilots, special events, and Vr projects.

With Head Count out now in theaters and on digital platforms and On Demand from Samuel Goldwyn Films, we caught up with Callahan again for our latest Q&a feature to discuss the real-life inspirations behind the film, the movie's cinematic influences, how she kept the film's monster a secret from most of the cast, and the potential sequel and prequel to the film.

Thanks for taking the time to catch up with us, Elle, and congratulations on Head Count! When and how did you and writer Michael Nader come up with the idea for Head Count?

Elle Callahan: We came up with the idea about three years ago when we took a trip out to Joshua Tree to that exact same house that we used in the movie.

While most horror movies settle for the usual slasher thrills, recent indie breakouts like “It Follows” and “Hereditary” have reminded that there are few things more pleasurably creepy than outré psychological horror in a credibly ordinary setting. Elle Callahan’s directorial debut feature “Head Count” is another intriguing mindbender in which 10 collegiate types find themselves under insidious assault by a vicious mythological entity. Samuel Goldwyn is releasing it to a sole hardtop — L.A.’s Arena Cinelounge — this Friday, which seems unfair, given the amount of pedestrian genre fodder that gets a better shake week after week. It will no doubt find its real audience in simultaneous home-format release.

After acquiring Head Count for North American distribution, Samuel Goldwyn Films revealed the official trailer for the horror film about a shape-shifting monster terrorizing a group of friends in Joshua Tree.

Directed by Elle Callahan from a screenplay by Callahan and Michael Nader, Head Count stars Ashleigh Morghan, Isaac Jay, and Sam Marra.

The script from Michael Nader centers on Evan (Isaac W. Jay) who joins a group of teens on a getaway in Joshua Tree. While exchanging ghost stories around the campfire, Evan reads aloud a mysterious chant from a website. From that moment, someone — or something — is among them.
