'Matlock' Showrunner Made the Great 'Jane the Virgin' 10 Years Ago
Image
CBS has been celebrating its massively popular 2024 reboot of the classic show Matlock. With a gender-swapped lead role, played by the formidable Kathy Bates, and a legendary series to pull from, it's a recipe for success (and has already been renewed for a second season). However, knowing the woman behind the magic, it's unsurprising the new Matlock is thriving. Showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman has a lengthy history of writing and producing for television, having worked on shows like Hope & Faith, Gilmore Girls, Charmed, and several others, but perhaps the golden egg of her career so far is the hit CW show Jane the Virgin, which aired from 2014 to 2019, and was loosely adapted from a Venezuelan soap opera from 2002.

Peyton List on Playing Different Ghosts in School Spirits & Girl Haunts Boy
Image
Megastar Peyton List has somehow found herself living in the spirit world. The charming Disney Channel regular became an even bigger hit with Cobra Kai, but she got arguably the most attention from playing someone who has disappeared Maddie Nears (but so far away) in the Paramount+ series, School Spirits. In that show, she's a high school student who lives in the spectral realm, a place she is revisiting with the newly released movie, Girl Haunts Boy.

In Girl Haunts Boy, she plays another ghostly student, Bea, except this time, she died in the 1920s and has been stuck inside one house ever since. That is, until the sweet Cole (played by Michael Cimino) finds the other half of her ring and can suddenly communicate with her and take her outside. In an interview with MovieWeb, List tells us that while both Maddie and Bea may be spirits of a sort,...

Girl Haunts Boy starring Peyton List and Michael Cimino coming to Netflix in October
Image
It looks like we finally have a streaming release date for the upcoming fantasy romance movie Girl Haunts Boy. It will reportedly be released on Netflix this October. The exact date is Thursday, Oct. 10, 2024, so make sure to save the date!

We first learned of this movie back in May 2022. However, it wasn't titled Girl Haunts Boy back then, nor was it billed as a movie. In fact, Netflix wasn't involved with the project in any way. Max, which was called HBO Max at the time, had greenlit the project, which was originally titled B-Loved. And instead of it being a movie, it was going to be a two-part television special event premiering on Max in time for Valentine’s Day 2023.

It's unclear what happened, but the special didn't end up being released on Max in February 2023. It didn't even come out this February. Now, we've just learned that Netflix...

10 TV Shows Whose Penultimate Episodes Were Better Than Their Finales
Image
Warning: This article discusses topics of violence and suicide.

TV show finales were always a big event, but for some titles, the penultimate episode was actually better. Second-to-last episodes were typically to build anticipation for the shows ending, but many hit their peak before they reached the finale. Even some of the best TV shows of all time had better penultimate episodes. However, this didnt mean that their finales were bad; several were critically acclaimed and incredibly memorable, but their predecessor still stood as a better story.

Just because these episodes were better than the last, it didnt mean that they were a replacement for the conclusion. However, some final episodes werent great, and there was a far better option to serve as its ending. Certain TV finales ensured a revival would never happen, whereas others left the door open to be revisited in the future. Regardless of whether their finale was perfect or terrible,...

10 Massive Plot Twists That Ruined Their Shows
Image
Unexpected plot twists can detrimentally impact a show, nullifying seasons of investment and betraying viewer trust. Contrived plot twists that disregard established character arcs and violate narrative principles sacrifice substance for mere shock value. Betraying characters through unrealistic twists and shallow surprises compromises the integrity of the show and frustrates invested fans.

A well-executed TV show plot twist should shock and impress, highlighting ingenuity and talent to enhance the viewing experience. Unfortunately, there are instances where an excessively large and unexpected plot twist can detrimentally impact a show, nullifying seasons of investment and rendering it no longer worth watching. When done right, twists like The Red Wedding episode in Game of Thrones electrify, driving intrigue and acclaim. However, poor narrative turns can also retroactively damage goodwill, especially if they seem to betray core characters or dynamics. Dedicating years to a show, reckless plot detours can sabotage the emotional journey.

15 Biggest Plot Twists In Sitcoms, Ranked
Image
Sitcom plot twists can be unexpected and surprising, even though comedy is their main focus. Not all plot twists in sitcoms are lighthearted, as they can include darker themes such as death and affairs. Sometimes sitcoms throw off their audience by introducing unexpected plot twists, like sudden pregnancies or characters coming back to life.

While a TV sitcom's main purpose is not to shock or surprise audiences with plot twists, there have been some completely unexpected moments in the sitcom format. A big shock in any television show is often foreshadowed, although this isn't exclusively, and when it isn't, it makes the moment even more surprising. Even in between laughs and giggles, sitcoms still have the power to completely throw off an audience.

It's worth noting that even in comedies, their plot twists aren't always light-hearted. Sitcoms have had their darker moments, even if they are underplayed with humor. Whether it is a death,...

Oz Rodriguez's "Miguel Wants to Fight" Provides New Definition of Latino Masculinity
Image
:When it comes to teen coming-of-age movies, the premise of Hulu's "Miguel Wants to Fight" sounds pretty formulaic. Our hero Miguel wants to get into a fight before moving out of town and is helped by his group of loyal friends. Think "American Pie" but violence - rather than sex.

Director Oz Rodriguez's "Miguel Wants to Fight" is about trying to fit yourself into the mold society says you should be in. In this particular case, it's a physically aggressive male, which isn't true to who our protagonist is.

"This kid lives in a town where fighting is a big deal. Where boxing is a huge deal and his dad is a fighter," Rodriguez tells Popsugar, "Miguel would rather not. He just wants to watch movies and watch dudes beat up themselves."

Still, that's where Miguel finds himself, butting up against cultural norms that can be pretty limiting for Latino boys.

‘The Royal’ Review: A Humbled Baseball Hero Takes a Second Swing After a Drug Arrest Derails His Life
Image
In 1980, the auspiciously named first baseman Willie Mays Aikens made baseball history when he hit two home runs in two World Series games, a feat that wasn’t repeated until 2009. That year, the Kansas City Royals player was second in home runs and RBIs only to teammate, friend and future Hall of Famer, George Brett.

Directed by Marcel Sarmiento, “The Royal” isn’t obsessed with Aikens’ on-the-field triumphs. Instead — with a script by Gregory W. Jordan, based on the 2012 book he co-wrote with Aiken, “Willie Mays Aikens: Safe at Home” — the movie recounts what happened to the major league slugger after he served 14 years for crack cocaine possession and distribution.

In 1994, under the inequitable federal sentencing guidelines, Aikens was sentenced to more than 20 years for possession with intent to sell 50 grams of crack cocaine. (He’d have had to be in possession of five kilos of powdered coke to receive a similar sentence.

And now, friends, we’ve come to the end of “Jane the Virgin,” and in classic telenovela fashion, the story closed with our titular heroine, played by Gina Rodriguez, getting her happy ending: marrying Rafael (Justin Baldoni), the father of her son Mateo and the man destiny has been pushing her toward since the pilot.

Actually, everyone close to Jane got what they wanted. Petra (Yael Grobglas) reunited with J.R. Emmy spotlight: Give Gina Rodriguez all the awards for that epic 7-minute ‘Jane the Virgin’ monologue
Brett Dier
“Jane the Virgin” answered most of your burning questions as how the eff Michael (Brett Dier) is alive in its fifth and final season premiere on Wednesday. But that wasn’t the episode’s big moment. Nah, that honor goes to Gina Rodriguez, who as Jane delivered a seven-minute (!) monologue (watch above) so good we’re just trying not to be sad thinking about the Emmy she won’t win for it but very much deserves to.

Requisite spoiler alert warning if you don’t want to know what happened with Michael. Last chance. Ok.

It turns out Rose (Bridget Regan) had faked Michael’s death and used electroshock therapy on his hippocampus and temporal lobe to erase all memory of who he was before. So for the past four years Michael has been living a quiet Montanan life as Jason (as in Bourne), a laconic ma’am-addressing fellow who is now a dog,...

Justin Baldoni, Gina Rodriguez, and Brett Dier in Jane the Virgin (2014)
‘Jane the Virgin’ Review: That 7-Minute Epic Monologue Is Everything That’s Great About the Series
Justin Baldoni, Gina Rodriguez, and Brett Dier in Jane the Virgin (2014)
[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers from “Jane the Virgin” Season 5 premiere episode, “Chapter Eighty-Two.”]

“Jane the Virgin” returned in top form Wednesday night for the premiere of its final season and resolved two cliffhangers: Who Jr (Rosario Dawson) shot and the apparent return of Jane’s husband Michael (Brett Dier) from the dead after four years. Both of these sensationalized stories stay true to the show’s telenovela roots, but the latter is this season’s pièce de résistance, through which the show explores how Jane (Gina Rodriguez) has grown and the ways that one forms a sense of self.

It turns out that this man is indeed Michael, but through an elaborate scheme, someone faked his death and gave him amnesia with electroshock therapy. He now calls himself Jason — after Jason Bourne — and has built a life for himself in Montana. Jason isn’t anything like Michael; he lacks humor, speaks in a slow drawl,...

‘Jane The Virgin’ Cast And Creator Reveal Final Season Details, Talk Bringing Joy Through Authentic Representation – PaleyFest
Gina Rodriguez in Jane the Virgin (2014)
As the final episode of Jane the Virgin is upon us, the cast got super emotional at the start of their PaleyFest panel. Star and executive producer Gina Rodriguez shed some tears as she and co-star Justin Baldoni remembered when they first started the show and how they had the opportunity to share their gifts with the world. The emotional moment soon turned into a fun lovefest and moderator Leanne Aguilera from Entertainment Tonight attempting to pull spoilers for the fifth and final season the cast. Show creator Jennie Snyder Urman and the cast kept tight-lipped, but they did spill some details.

Rodriguez, Baldoni and Urman were joined on stage by Andrea Navedo, Yael Grobglas, Elias Janssen, Jaime Camil, Anthony Mendez and Brett Dier. Missing from the panel was Ivonne Coll who was working on the spinoff Jane the Novela but was certainly there in spirit. Nonetheless, no time was...

‘Jane The Virgin’ Team Talks Importance of Representation, Taking Final Season Back to Series Roots
Justin Baldoni, Gina Rodriguez, and Brett Dier in Jane the Virgin (2014)
After five years, multiple time jumps and a number of timely storylines, in addition to takes on telenovela tropes, “Jane The Virgin” is coming to an end on the CW. While there may be some pressure to end the show on a positive and powerful note, it’s not a pressure that is completely foreign to series creator and showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman.

When she was first developing the show, Urman shared at the show’s final farewell Paleyfest panel in Hollywood, Calif. Wednesday, she felt “pressure to make sure the representation felt good to the actors and the writing team.”

“I just wanted to authentically represent these characters and tell a lot of stories [that] women can be different in so many ways. There’s no right or wrong,” Urman continued. “It’s all been so much more than I could have expected.”

For series stars Gina Rodriguez and Andrea Navedo,...

‘Jane The Virgin’ Team Talks Creating ‘Really Big Family Moments’ and ‘Closure’ for Final Season
“Jane The Virgin” is coming to an end on the CW with a fifth and final season but series creator and showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman and series star Gina Rodriguez have known this would be the end for quite some time.

“Around the second year Mark Pedowitz said to me that the show will go as long as the story goes. That is a gift, if you work in TV, that you don’t always get, and I was really grateful to that because it let me plan,” Urman said at the CW’s Television Critics Assn. press tour panel for the show Thursday.

Urman said she told Rodriguez around the third season that they had two more years worth of story “if you’re good.”

“Gina and I are real partners. She’s the one I come to with any and everything. We’re a team,” she explained.

Jane the Virgin: Spinoff of CW Series Being Developed
It's not over 'til it's over, and sometimes not even then. Although it's not technically "cancelled," the Jane the Virgin TV show will finish its original run on The CW with the upcoming fifth season, but the story may not end there. The network is developing a Jane the Virgin spinoff, which is still untitled. The current idea is for an anthology series featuring characters from Jane's novel, and Jane Villanueva herself (i.e. Gina Rodriguez) may narrate the new series.

A satirical CW telenovela, Jane the Virgin stars Gina Rodriguez, Andrea Navedo, Yael Grobglas, Ivonne Coll, Jaime Camil, and Justin Baldoni. Although saving herself for marriage, Jane (Rodriguez) gets pregnant, thanks to accidental artificial insemination, which turns her life upside down. Although no premiere date has been announced, the fifth and final season of Jane the Virgin...
