- Before the age of five, Tracy had a film credit to her name. The daughter of singer Ricky Nelson and Kristin Harmon, she appeared as one of Henry Fonda's daughters in the movie Yours, Mine and Ours (1968). In 1982, she became the popular Valley Girl "Jennifer DeNuccio" on the television series Square Pegs (1982) which ran from 1982-83. This show made Tracy's name well known in Hollywood. She made a few small appearances in movies while continuing to pursue television roles, and returned in series Glitter (1984). Two years later, she was in the Nick Nolte/Bette Midler movie Down and Out in Beverly Hills (1986). In 1987, Tracy was very sick and one month after her marriage to William R. Moses, she was diagnosed with Hodgkin's disease, but later cured. In 1989, she returned to television as "Sister Stephanie 'Steve' Oskowski" in Father Dowling Mysteries (1989). - Nelson has survived three kinds of cancer. She was diagnosed with stage 2 Hodgkin's Lymphoma a month after her 1987 marriage to William R. Moses, and one year after her father was killed in an aircraft crash on New Year's Eve in DeKalb, Texas. Nelson went into remission after surgery, chemotherapy (ABVD) and radiation at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles, California. Having suffered trauma from radiation, Nelson was diagnosed with thyroid cancer in 2005 and breast cancer in 2010. She is currently fully recovered from a bilateral mastectomy and complete reconstruction. Nelson is active in cancer research advocacy and was the spokesperson for The Lymphoma Research Foundation of America. She received the "Lifesaver Award" from that organization and the "Jill Ireland Award" from the Amie Karen Cancer Fund for Children.
- Paternal grandparents are Ozzie Nelson and Harriet Nelson. Maternal grandparents are football great (and later sport broadcaster) Tom Harmon, and the 1940s "B"-movie actress Elyse Knox. She is the niece of Kelly Harmon, Mark Harmon and David Nelson.
- She and her younger brothers, Matthew Nelson and Gunnar Nelson, have always maintained that their father's 1985 plane crash death was the result of a malfunctioning heater and not of alleged drug use on board the plane.
- Two of her brothers are twins Matthew Nelson and Gunnar Nelson of the band Nelson. Her third brother is Sam Nelson.
