Jim Carrey's career has taken some interesting turns over the years. After becoming a box-office juggernaut in the mid-1990s with the blazing blockbuster streak of "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective," "The Mask," "Dumb and Dumber," "Batman Forever," and "Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls," he found the ditch with the commercial and critical wipeout of Ben Stiller's darkly comedic curveball "The Cable Guy." The thoughtful actor reestablished his commercial connection with mainstream moviegoers the following year with "Liar Liar," then took another risk with Peter Weir's "The Truman Show." The result was one of the best films of 1998, one that received a curious smattering of Oscar nominations for Weir (Director), Supporting Actor (Ed Harris), and Original Screenplay (Andrew Niccol). That a film as acclaimed and successful as "The Truman Show" could be denied Best Picture and Best Actor nods in a weak year felt like a rebuke of its star.

It was recently reported that last year would be the start of location filming for Andrew Niccol’s sequel to Lord of War. The sequel’s producer, Karim Debbagh of Kasbah Films, has expressed his zeal to start production. Debbagh told Variety, “We’re trying to cover four or five African countries, such as Libya, Egypt, Senegal and Mali and several countries in the Middle East, and we’ve almost found everything in Morocco. Casablanca itself is so diverse that you find areas that look like Senegal and others that are very luxurious like a California neighborhood, and if you’re looking for places that look similar to Libya, Yémen or Syria, you can find them in and around Marrakech.”

Lord of War has gotten a major sequel update. The 2005 movie, which was written and directed by Andrew Niccol, stars Nicolas Cage, Jared Leto, Bridget Moynahan, Ian Holm, and Ethan Hawke. The Lord of War story is based on true events, following Yuri Orlov as he goes from being a restaurant owner to an arms trafficker. The sequel Lords of War has been announced, with Nosferatu's Bill Skarsgård reportedly set to executive produce the movie and star opposite Cage as Orlov's son, but it missed its planned Fall 2023 filming date.
Josh Horowitz recently interviewed Bill Skarsgård on an episode of Happy Sad Confused. During their wide-ranging conversation, the topic turned to Lords of War, which Skarsgård said is probably "happening next year," referring to 2025, as the interview was conducted in late 2024 during the Nosferatu press tour. January 2025 could mark a bleak month for very specific reasons, but in that month one can watch a nicely curated collection of David Bowie’s best performances. Nearly a decade since he passed, the iconic actor (who had some other trades) is celebrated with The Man Who Fell to Earth, Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence, The Linguini Incident, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me, and Basquiat. (Note: watch The Missing Pieces under Fire Walk with Me‘s Criterion edition for about three times as much Phillip Jeffries.) It’s a retrospective-heavy month: Nicole Kidman, Cameron Crowe, Ethan Hawke, Paulin Soumanou Vieyra, Paolo Sorrentino, and Sean Baker are given spotlights; the first and last bring with them To Die For and Take Out‘s Criterion Editions, joining Still Walking, Hunger, and A Face in the Crowd.

The 2011 release, directed by Andrew Niccol and starring Cillian Murphy, Justin Timberlake, Amanda Seyfried and Olivia Wilde, will reach Fortnite via Epic Games’ Unreal Editor. Death Row’s Good Game Champ division is handling the effort.
Fortnite has hundreds of millions of registered users and several million generally play at the same time. Some are there for straightforward game play but the platform has also become a wide-reach venue for a range of other activities, including concerts and movie premieres. The acronym Uefn, short for Unreal Editor for Fortnite, is an increasingly common one in the gaming world, where increasing numbers of projects are migrating to the space.

Cage won the Academy Award for Best Actor in recognition of his starring role in 1995's Leaving Las Vegas, which is widely considered Nicolas Cage's best 1990s' movie. The 1990s also saw Cage starring in several action movies, including The Rock, Con Air, and Face/Off.
The quality and reception of his movies varied significantly through the 2000s and 2010s, ranging from the popular National Treasure films to the critically panned Ghost Rider movies. Jude Law is having a December to remember. The two-time Oscar nominee is currently the star of two critically acclaimed works on the big and small screens, and he is again proving that he’s among a select few actors who can bring a sense of authenticity to roles as disparate as a battle-weary FBI agent in The Order and a Force-using pirate on Star Wars: Skeleton Crew.
In the former, Law’s composite character, Terry Husk, is relocated by the FBI to a sleepy field office in Idaho after a punishing career opposing the likes of the Sicilian Mob and the KKK. Written by Zach Baylin and directed by Justin Kurzel, the 1980s-set true story instead positions Terry for his most notable case yet in taking on Bob Mathews (Nicholas Hoult), the real-life leader of a white supremacist group known as the Order.

This post contains spoilers for "Gattaca."
Despite its tight budget, Andrew Niccol's "Gattaca" has always felt prescient, with its near-future storyline about genetic determinism undertaking an exploration of root-level societal discrimination in a world devoid of meaningful privacy. Here, technological advancements in genetic studies have prompted a genetic registry database -- a rule book that classifies humans into problematic categories, deciding who is more "valid" in terms of their value to societal development and scientific advancement. Naturally conceived individuals are prone to be termed as "in-valids," as they are considered susceptible to genetic disorders or aberrations. Vincent Freeman (Ethan Hawke) is one such man, who can only dream of being an astronaut but never actualize such ambitions ... unless he resorts to unconventional means, like identity theft.
While the society in "Gattaca" does not legally condone genetic discrimination, those branded as "in-valids" face discrimination at every turn, as their births...

Few filmmakers can claim to have helped shape an entire era of cinema, but the boom in 1990s indie cinema is impossible to imagine without producer Stacey Sher.
“If you say, U.S. independent cinema of the ’90s, whatever film touched your feelings, your emotions and your memory, most probably, it has Stacey involved in it,” says Locarno film festival artistic director Giona A. Nazzaro, on the reason Locarno is honoring Sher with its 2024 Premio Raimondo Rezzonico, or best independent producer, award.
After a six-year mentorship under legendary producers Deborah Hill and Linda Obst, making such films as Chris Columbus’ debut Adventures in Babysitting and Terry Gilliam’s The Fisher King, Sher joined the Danny DeVito and Michael Shamberg’s newly-founded indie shingle Jersey Films, soon becoming a partner. At Jersey, she was instrumental in championing a new generation of directors — Quentin Tarantino, Steven Soderbergh, Andrew Niccol, Ben Stiller — whose films would define a decade.

Ethan Hawke goes back behind the camera for Wildcat, and here are details of his new film – plus a trailer.

Plus, films as diverse as Dead Poet’s Society, Training Day, The Purge, Predestination and Lord Of War – the sequel to the latter is currently in development, with writer and director Andrew Niccol and star Nicholas Cage on board. Laura Harrier is ready to go to war with Nicolas Cage and Bill Skarsgård for the Andrew Niccol-directed sequel Lords of War. Harrier will star opposite Cage and Skarsgård for a follow-up to the filmmaker’s 2005 thriller, Lord of War.
Andrew Niccol directs from a script he wrote, with Cage reprising his role from the 2005 original, arms dealer Yuri Orlov. The plot includes a father-son twist, with Skarsgård playing Orlov’s son, Anton. In the Lord of War sequel, Anton “tries to top his father’s wrongs instead of stopping them as he launches a mercenary army to fight America’s Middle East conflicts.” The details of Harrier’s role remain a mystery.

Exclusive: Laura Harrier (White Men Can’t Jump) has been tapped for a major role opposite Bill Skarsgård and Nicolas Cage in Lords of War, the sequel to 2005 crime thriller Lord of War, which Andrew Niccol (Anon) wrote and is directing for Vendôme Pictures (Coda), sources tell Deadline.
Lords of War picks up the story of Yuri Orlov (Cage), the world’s most notorious gunrunner, watching as he discovers he has a son, Anton (Skarsgård), who isn’t trying to right his father’s wrongs — he’s trying to top them. Not only selling guns but the “trigger pullers” too, Anton is amassing a mercenary army to fight America’s Middle East conflicts. This is the story of Yuri and Anton’s bitter rivalry — even at odds over the same woman. Who will prevail when father and son go to war?
Specifics as to Harrier’s part are under wraps.

The Monopoly movie adaptation has been in development for over a decade, switching studios and directors multiple times. Lionsgate recently confirmed that Monopoly is still in development after acquiring the global content platform eOne from Hasbro. It remains unclear if Tim Story and Kevin Hart are still involved in the project, but Lionsgate is eager to move forward in the wake of Mattel's success with Barbie.
The Monopoly movie adaptation is still in development at Lionsgate despite a lack of updates over the past four years. The project has actually been in development hell for over a decade now, having first been announced in 2008 that an adaptation was in the works at Universal Pictures. While it switched studios and directors several times, by 2019, an exciting update arrived that Kevin Hart would star in the movie, reuniting him with Think Like a Man and Ride Along director Tim Story. Although Nicolas Cage has been known to star in just about any kind of project when attempting to pay off his now-infamous expensive tastes, he has also starred in some great movies that have gotten overlooked. These films include some dramedies of the early 2000s, such as Matchstick Men, The Weather Man and Lord of War. 2005’s Lord of War came from writer and director Andrew Niccol, who had previously penned the Jim Carrey movie The Truman Show and told the story of Yuri Orlov, played by Nicolas Cage, who became a gun runner and quickly rose to become a wealthy and notorious illegal arms dealer of worldwide conflicts.
Variety has revealed that a planned sequel from Niccol is now set to start filming in Morocco locations next March. The sequel’s producer, Karim Debbagh of Kasbah Films, has expressed his zeal to start production now that the writers’ and...

Nicolas Cage and writer/director Andrew Niccol are returning for Lord Of War 2, which is going to start filming later than originally planned.
It came as something of a surprise earlier this year when it was announced that the excellent 2005 movie Lord Of War, from writer/director Andrew Niccol, was in line for a sequel.
If you’ve not seen the terrific original, it stars Nicolas Cage and – yes – Jared Leto, and for a start boasts one of the best opening credits sequences of that decade. It follows a rogue arms trader, where inevitably things go awry. And the $50m-ish production returned some $72m in cinema takings.
Over time, though, its reputation has grown, and thus the sequel news perhaps shouldn’t have been the surprise it was.
Nicolas Cage will be reprising the role of Yuri Orlov in whatever Lord Of War 2 ends up being called. Bill Skarsgard is also on board.

Peter Chernin’s North Road Company has hired Amy Israel in the role of president of television.
Israel was most recently the head of scripted for Showtime, though it was announced in September she would be stepping down from that role by year’s end. In her new role, Israel will oversee all of North Road’s scripted television development and production. The role reunites her with fellow Showtime alum David Nevins, who currently serves as North Road’s CEO and to whom Israel will report.
“Amy is among the best in the business, the driving force behind a long list of the most impactful shows in our time,” Nevins said. “I know first-hand the value of her unique combination of creative leadership and producorial drive, and I am fully confident she will make a fantastic addition to North Road’s leadership and the ongoing expansion of our industry-leading content portfolio.

Every year, dozens of science-fiction films hit theaters but only a few feature enough intelligence and power to leave a mark. The best ones challenge our minds with captivating ideas and cause us to rethink the world and our place in it. Think Steven Spielberg's "Close Encounters of the Third Kind," Stanley Kubrick's "2001: A Space Odyssey," or John Carpenter's "The Thing," all drastically different tales with unique perspectives on the universe. Or, for a little more fun, hit up Spielberg's "E.T.," George Lucas' "Star Wars," or Luc Besson's "The Fifth Element," then explore the darker nature of life with Ridley Scott's "Blade Runner" and Andrew Niccol's "Gattaca."
The point is that science fiction caters to all crowds—even those needing a good twist. Luckily, the genre features several pictures designed to make heads explode with stunning third-hour revelations. Often, these plot...

Israel’s formal title is executive vice president of global programming. She will remain with Showtime through the end of the year in a transitional role. The announcement of her departure was made by Paramount’s Chris McCarthy and Nina L. Diaz.
“For the past 12 years, Amy has been an integral part of the creative team and the driving force behind some of Showtime’s most iconic franchises,” McCarthy and Diaz wrote in a memo to their staff. “From the beloved ‘Billions’ to the bold hit ‘Yellowjackets,’ Amy’s love for mentoring staff as well as her ability to nurture and foster talent toward realizing their vision is nothing short of inspiring. In Time, a 2011 sci-fi movie set in a world where time is a form of currency, has become an unexpected hit on Netflix after 12 years. The film, directed by Andrew Niccol and starring Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried, follows a society where the rich can live unnaturally long while the poor struggle to afford a normal lifespan. I remember going to the movie theater in 1998 to see “The Truman Show” for the first time and being blown away. It was the scariest non-horror film I’d ever seen up to that point (and maybe still), showing us a world of utter consumerism and commodification and its horrific impact on a man who didn’t know he was born to literally be a reality show. It seemed inconceivable that something like what happens to Truman Burbank (Jim Carrey) could really occur. This was, after all, the era before we started carrying around smartphones and mini computers in our pocket, before anything called Facebook and Twitter and Instagram and years before even MySpace came into being – and before we were all deputized as amateur filmmakers thanks to the still camera and video we keep with us and use to publish sometimes hourly.

25 years ago, The Truman Show star Jim Carrey proved to the world that he was somehow even more than just a generational comedic talent. Combined with the Oscar-nominated screenplay of Andrew Niccol and the direction of honorary Oscar winner Peter Weir, Carrey showcased his gifted dramatic chops by way of Truman Burbank, the unknowing star of the world’s most popular reality television show. On day 10,909 of his life’s 24/7 broadcast, Truman gradually begins to recognize that there’s something off about his seemingly idyllic existence on Seahaven Island, which, unbeknownst to him, is actually the world’s largest soundstage in Burbank.

With the popularity of Jim Carrey's original movie, fans have been waiting for any The Truman Show 2 updates for a number of years. 1998's The Truman Show starred Carrey as the mild-mannered Truman Burbank — an unassuming Average Joe living in a seemingly idyllic town and leading a normal life. However, unbeknownst to Truman, his entire life has been a reality TV show. Every moment, from his birth to his first kiss to his serene life at the start of the movie, is staged. The Truman Show's unique premise — years before reality TV shows like Big Brother — made for a funny, compelling, and thought-provoking movie that won Carrey a Golden Globe and was nominated for three Oscars. By modern standards, The Truman Show 2 would seem like a sure thing — but, of course, there's no Truman Show 2.

After just a few months of being in development, Showtime has officially scrapped plans for a Gattaca TV show adaptation. Written and directed by The Truman Show's Andrew Niccol, the dystopian sci-fi movie was set in a near future in which society is split between those conceived naturally and those created via genetic selection, following Ethan Hawke's Vincent as he poses as the latter in the hopes of fulfilling his dreams of deep-space travel. Also starring Jude Law, Uma Thurman and Gore Vidal, Gattaca scored critical acclaim, though proved a box office failure.

Showtime has passed on developing a previously announced live-action episodic TV series based on writer/director Andrew Niccol's 1997 ‘dystopian’ sci-fi thriller, “Gattaca”:
‘…a future society is driven by eugenics where potential children are conceived through genetic selection to ensure they possess the best hereditary traits of their parents. ‘Vincent Freeman’ conceived outside the eugenics program struggles to overcome genetic discrimination to realize his dream of going into space…”
The film draws on concerns over reproductive technologies that facilitate eugenics, and the possible consequences of such technological developments for society. It also explores the idea of destiny and the ways in which it can and does govern lives. Characters in Gattaca continually battle both with society and with themselves to find their place in the world and who they are destined to be according to their genes.

Nicolas Cage's true-story-based arms dealer is returning in Lords of War with a twist. Cage led the cast of the original 2005 crime drama as Yuri Orlov, loosely inspired by real-life smuggler Viktor Bout, as he finds himself confronted with the complicated morals of his work by his wife as well as an Interpol agent keen on bringing him down. The Truman Show became a classic soon after its 1998 release, but it has only grown in thematic relevance in the 25 years since. The movie stars Jim Carrey as Truman Burbank, a man unaware that his life is playing out on a television set populated by paid actors and watched by millions of audiences at home. Reality television continues to hold a fascination for modern society, and social media has made people-watching ubiquitous, making it the perfect time to bring the film that started it all back into focus. There’s a little moment in The Truman Show which I think about a lot. Truman and his college pals are at a ‘50s-style dance in their tuxes, twisting to a twangy, yee-haw version of T Rex’s ‘20th Century Boy’ which sounds like it was recorded at Sun Records. It is, as a guy who’s very much not Marc Bolan sings, just like rock ‘n’ roll.
But it only clicked the second time I watched the film that it was a snapshot of the weirdness which bubbles underneath the surface of The Truman Show. Jim Carrey’s Truman couldn’t possibly be exposed to actual rock ‘n’ roll in case it fired up a spirit of rebellion and mistrust of authority. The shadowy forces behind his life-as-entertainment couldn’t possibly risk their asset becoming a fan of the Beatles and deciding to turn off his mind, relax and float downstream,...

Fifteen minutes and three Geniuses later, I was informed that numerous attempts had been made to restore my MacBook to its factory settings, all of which had inexplicably failed. “It just didn’t want to die,” said one of the Geniuses, directing me toward the newer models available for purchase. “It must have loved being yours.” I walked home in a state of devastation—and surprise at my devastation, too. At my desk I unboxed the machine, which I knew was in many ways identical to my former MacBook but for now felt uncanny. Powering up the screen, I was reminded...

Given how far reality television has come in the last 25 years, it’s hard not to think about how director Peter Weir’s 1998 film The Truman Show prophesized the TV format’s commercial prosperity. Nowadays, cameras are ubiquitous and with the prevalence of social media platforms and everyone’s persistently online existence, ordinary citizens can feel like the star of their own show broadcast publicly 24/7.
The Truman Show deserves at least some credit, some might even say blame, for ushering in the addictive spectacle of watching people’s lives unfold in real-time, day after day, as a popular form of 21st century entertainment. The big difference, of course, is that most reality show and social media stars are willing participants in their recorded stories.
But in the days before “Survivor” and “Big Brother” and the entire reality genre were omnipresent, how did The Truman Show itself become a reality?

Clearly not content with already gearing up a sequel to his 2005 Nicolas Cage-starring Lord Of War (with Cage back and Bill Skarsgård. joining the fun), writer/director Andrew Niccol is setting up another film. And he has quite the cast aboard, nabbing a pack of New Zealand talents including Melanie Lynskey, Karl Urban, Jemaine Clement and Thomasin McKenzie ready for I, Object.
With Niccol writing and directing, the film follows 10-year-old Tom, who’s grieving the loss of his father and, unable to relate to the people in his life, takes refuge in the everyday objects around him. Drinks can lids, suitcases and untold numbers of everyday objects reveal their true faces and speak to Tom, helping him on his healing journey.
It all sounds quite Pixar in nature, but we're expecting Niccol to give it a twist. It'll also be a blend of live-action and CG, so not a straight animated adventure.
