Standing on the shoulders of Oscar-bothering British boffin dramas such as The Theory of Everything and The Imitation Game, Ben Taylor's (Sex Education) big-screen debut is a gentle proposition that would fit snugly into the Christmas TV schedules. It follows young nurse/embryologist Jean (Thomasin McKenzie), scientist Dr Robert Edwards (James Norton), known as Bob, and obstetrician Patrick Steptoe (Bill Nighy) from 1968-1978 as they create the first “test-tube baby” through painstaking — and often painful — trial and error.
While the script serves up a few clunkers — “You truly are impossible, aren’t you?” Jean tells Bob with an indulgent smile; “We’re making the impossible possible!” he marvels — it always has the ring of emotional truth about it. Screenwriter Jack Thorne (Enola Holmes) and his wife Rachel Mason, who developed the story with Emma Gordon and Shaun Topp, went through IVF themselves, so they know how brutal even a...

Netflix’s animated holiday film That Christmas, directed by Simon Otto, brings together heartwarming storytelling and a festive soundtrack that amplifies its holiday charm. Based on the trilogy by Richard Curtis, the film is set in the picturesque coastal town of Wellington-on-Sea, where a blizzard threatens to disrupt Christmas. With Santa Claus (voiced by Brian Cox) and his loyal reindeer Dasher (Guz Khan) braving the storm, the film weaves multiple narratives of resilience, connection, and holiday spirit.
Beyond its engaging plot and stellar voice cast—including Fiona Shaw, Bill Nighy, and Jodie Whittaker—That Christmas boasts a diverse soundtrack that captures the holiday cheer, blending classic Christmas tunes, pop anthems, and an original track by Ed Sheeran. Here’s a breakdown of every song featured in the film.

Netflix’s fifth and final original Christmas movie for 2024 is now streaming, and this one is animated. But you’re still going to recognize a whole lot of the cast.
Written and directed by Richard Curtis, who brought fans “Love, Actually,” the film centers on a group of people in a small town in the UK, getting ready to celebrate Christmas. Like “Love, Actually,” the story is told via vignettes, jumping around between different groups and pairings.
And as you meet those groups and pairings, you’re definitely going to recognize some of those voices. Here’s who we have.
Netflix/Getty Images Santa (Brian Cox)
The big man himself is voiced by Brian Cox, who you likely know from his time on “Succession,” or films including “X2: X-Men United,” “Troy,” “Red,” “Zodiac” and “Trick ‘r Treat,” among many others.

From director Simon Otto, the animated feature That Christmas is based on a trilogy of books by the writer of Notting Hill, Love, Actually and more — Richard Curtis.
The title recalls a particularly memorable Christmas for Santa Claus (voiced by Brian Cox) as he recalls having to brave a blizzard with only one of his reindeer Dasher (Guz Khan) in order to deliver some much-needed gifts to the residents of Wellington-on-Sea, who become separated in many ways partially due to the storm. An ensemble cast weaves together in the Christmas story that also features the voices of Fiona Shaw, Bill Nighy, Jodie Whittaker and more.
Ed Sheeran wrote a new original song for the film “Under the Tree,” not to be confused with another festive needle drop, Kelly Clarkson’s “Underneath the Tree.” Find the full That Christmas soundtrack below.

Based on Richard Curtis’ childrens’ book trilogy, That Christmas tells the tale of a heartwarming animated Christmas memory set in the small town of Wellington-on-Sea. A big blizzard that challenged everyone’s normal Christmas routine marked Santa Claus’ (Brian Cox) memory of the holiday, but despite its initially separating families, the storm brought them together in a way too.
Bill Nighy, Fiona Shaw, Jodie Whittaker and more also feature in the voice cast of the new cozy Christmas film, which arrived on Netflix Dec. 4 and was directed by Simon Otto.

“That Christmas” is an animation movie directed by Simon Otto. With the voices of Bill Nighy and Brian Cox.
Netflix’s latest addition to the holiday movie roster, “That Christmas”, arrives with the pedigree of Richard Curtis, the mind behind romantic comedy classics like “Love Actually” and “Four Weddings and a Funeral”. This animated feature attempts to modernize Christmas while simultaneously harking back to its essence, a balancing act that yields mixed results.
The film’s premise revolves around a Christmas celebration turned upside down when the adults find themselves stranded on a ferry, leaving the younger generation to forge their own holiday traditions. Meanwhile, Santa Claus, voiced by the inimitable Brian Cox, embarks on his annual gift-giving journey with his trusty reindeer.
Curtis’s trademark sentimentality is on full display, weaving multiple storylines into a tapestry of holiday cheer. The animation is undoubtedly a strong point, bringing a vibrant and festive atmosphere to life.

Journalists from The Guardian and The Observer have gone on strike for 48-hours in protest over a potential sale of the latter.
The Observer is The Guardian’s sister paper, which comes out weekly on Sundays. First published in 1791, it now has around 70 journalists working on it and includes magazine supplements such as The Observer Magazine and The Observer Food Monthly.
It emerged earlier this year that the Scott Trust is considering a sale of The Observer to the relatively nascent Tortoise Media, which was founded in 2019 by editor James Harding as a longform journalism and podcast platform.
The news has caused consternation in the U.K., with leading figures including Bill Nighy, Hugh Grant and Ralph Fiennes signing an open letter decrying the deal, which they described as “disastrous.”

What is a Christmas movie? There’s two possible answers to that question. It can be a Christmas-themed movie—with all the merriment of the festival. But it can also be a movie that is set around the time of Christmas, say a Die Hard, for example, or the very recent Terrifier 3. We are, of course, here to talk about That Christmas, Netflix’s latest Christmas offering—perhaps the first of this season. Directed by Simon Otto (known for his remarkable work as the animator in the How to Train Your Dragon franchise), it does fall under the Christmas-themed movie category, and despite being primarily for kids, it does boast of a stellar voice cast that has names like Brian Cox, Fiona Shaw, Jodie Whittaker, and Bill Nighy. Thanks to someone like Otto at the helm of it, the animation is vibrant and colorful, just the kind of thing...

Richard Curtis may be a rom-com staple auteur, but that doesn’t mean the writer/director thinks all his films belong on the nice list. Curtis, who makes his animated film debut with “That Christmas,” told IndieWire that another of his anthology Christmas films actually set the stage for his Netflix children’s feature: “Love Actually.”
While Curtis co-adapted “That Christmas” with Peter Souter from his own bestselling book series, it’s Simon Otto (“How to Train Your Dragon”) who directs (“I’m very much not number one here”); for “Love Actually,” Curtis pulled double duty back in 2003. Both films center on an ensemble cast with holiday-centric stories intersecting between characters. As Curtis told IndieWire, it was the “catastrophe” of editing “Love Actually” that helped bring “That Christmas” to the screen.
“The strange thing about ‘Love Actually’ is, when we finished the movie, it was a catastrophe,” Curtis said of...

As the Christmas season approaches, you're probably ready to get into the holiday spirit with some on-brand movies — and if we're putting aside all but one streaming service, there are some pretty great selections on Amazon's Prime Video. I'm just as susceptible to holiday cheer as anyone else, and whether they're from my childhood or new discoveries, I like to settle in on a chilly early winter night with a holiday-themed movie. So what are some great selections on Prime Video?
This list obviously excludes anything that requires a secondary subscription — looking at you, movies available on Prime through Max and Starz — as well as anything you have to pay to rent, but there are still some pretty solid holiday movies to choose from on the online retailer's proprietary streamer. From dramatic family Christmases to a sprawling British ensemble comedy to one of the most famous (and emotional) Christmas movies in cinematic history,...

A dream that is kept alive by the slimmest of hope. “Joy” (2024) starring Bill Nighy, Thomasin McKenzie, and James Norton is a conventionally crafted, gently stirring search for that joy regarding motherhood. The Netflix drama, directed by Ben Taylor and scripted by Jack Thorne, sifts through the historical events that precede the birth of the world’s first ‘test-tube baby,’ Louise Joy Brown. The formulaic yet nuanced approach works well for the film as it manages to tug the right kind of heartstrings.
Thorne’s breezy script does not take time to jump into the proverbial action. It is the late 1960s, and we have Jean Purdy (McKenzie) meet visionary physiologist Robert Edwards (James Norton) right away. Jean gets pulled into Robert’s ambitious dream, which would eventually pave the way for IVF (In vitro fertilization). All...

Our top pick this week, “Blitz,” is a serious Oscar contender in many categories, including Best Picture, Best Sound, and Best Supporting Actress for Saoirse Ronan, who could be a double nominee this year for this and “The Outrun.” Steve McQueen — a Best Picture winner for “12 Years a Slave” — directs this World War II drama, his first feature in six years, which follows a boy (Elliott Heffernan) as he tries to reunite with his mother (Ronan) during the Blitz of London.
“Blitz” is a sweeping, old-fashioned British WWII movie — perhaps a little too old-fashioned to be a top-tier modern awards contender, as it’s tracking outside of the top five in many of our predictions categories, including Best Director and Best Original Screenplay. Reviews have been positive but not effusive, especially compared to McQueen’s earlier work. But you can expect it to pick up a few noms. It...

“Joy, The Birth of Ifv” is a Netflix drama movie starring Thomasin McKenzie, James Norton, and Bill Nighy. It is directed by Ben Taylor.
In 1978, Louise Joy Brown entered the world as the first “test-tube baby,” a groundbreaking moment in medical history. This achievement was the result of immense effort, overcoming substantial criticism and numerous ethical dilemmas. At its core, it was a fight to help women conceive children.
“Joy” narrates the determined endeavor of three individuals who made this monumental advancement possible. Their work has enabled countless women to fulfill their dreams of motherhood through scientific assistance, marking one of the most significant breakthroughs in recent times.
About the Film
Classic, melodramatic, and imbued with noble intentions and deep human sentiment. Is it sophisticated and revolutionary in its aesthetic ambitions? No, it does not strive for that.

The Wild Robot is an animated film starring Lupita Nyong’o as the voice of Roz, an abandoned robot who must learn to adapt in the wilderness. The film debuted to mostly positive reviews and despite some hype had a modest start at the box office. However, several weeks later the heartfelt animated drama has emerged as a silent hit.

The film’s success lies in one key aspect that many studios, especially those producing animated films have forgotten in recent times. The same lesson was previously hinted at by the silent success of a 2023 Disney animated movie, but studios do not seem eager to capitalize on it. Here is why The Wild Robot emerged as a box-office success despite a slow start.

It’s a unique feeling to be both mostly won over by and ultimately disappointed by a film. Yet cinema, even when it lets us down just as it builds us up, is often beautiful precisely for the sense of emotional limbo it creates. In the case of Netflix’s “Joy,” this stems from the sturdy yet rather standard execution of what is far from a standard moment in still relevant history. Not to be confused with the largely forgettable 2015 Jennifer Lawrence film of the same name, this more heartfelt historical drama centers on the creation of the first in vitro fertilization (IVF) baby, the years of research that went into the achievement and the lives of those working tirelessly to make such treatment possible. It’s also an unfortunately timely work as body autonomy and choice over birth, including IVF, again face an uncertain future.

There is no happiness on this Earth more primal or profound than having a baby, and yet the expectation to do so has forever been wielded against women as a misery; it’s been a cross to bear for the people who get pregnant, a pariah-level sin for the people who choose not to, and — perhaps most unfairly of all — a curse from God for the people who can’t.
I trust you’re not hearing about this for the first time in a review of a pleasantly forgettable Netflix film starring Bill Nighy, but the fact remains that “society” has been content with that arrangement for much of the last few millennia, and science’s best efforts to amend it have invariably been met with scorn. Indeed, the work of developing in vitro fertilization was so controversial that it had to be hidden from the church and the tabloids alike.

We are halfway through November, Thanksgiving is coming sooner rather than later, and Netflix has a bunch of new movies and shows coming to their lineup. It's a busy week! The new additions include a new Christmas movie, a based-on-a-true-story movie about IVF, and a movie based on an August Wilson play.
First up this week is The Merry Gentleman. It hits Netflix on Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2024 and stars Britt Robertson, Chad Michael Murray, Marla Sokoloff, and Marc Anthony Samuel. The holiday movie tells the story of a young woman who stages an all-male Christmas-themed show in order to save her parent's small-town venue. You know... the usual tale. I cannot wait to watch this. It's like Christmas-themed Magic Mike!
Check out the trailer below:
Joy is also headed to Netflix this week! It hits the streaming service on Thursday, Nov. 21 and follows the story of the creation of in vitro fertilization (IVF) in the UK.

Gregor Fisher and Greg McHugh star in Scottish sitcom Only Child, and the BBC has released a first trailer. More here.
Gregor Fisher will always be inextracably intertwined with Rab C. Nesbitt, the permanently plastered Glaswegian festering in squalor alongside long suffering wife Mary Doll, played by Elaine C. Smith. The show became so popular that writer Ian Pattison adapted it into a stage show, and stars like Sylvester McCoy, Stanley Baxter and Richard E. Grant appeared in the show. Series 3 episode Touch features a very early television appearance by David Tennant, who guest stars as barmaid Davina.
As we approach the festive season, Fisher also features in arguably the sweetest story in Richard Curtis’ Love Actually, about the friendship between his character Joe and Bill Nighy’s rock star Billy Mack.
Now though? Gregor Fisher is returning to the small screen for sitcom Only Child.

A topical historical drama depicting the creation of IVF; a paranoid thriller series starring Colman Domingo; a bracingly original crime musical, and awards contender, from Jacques Audiard; the second part of the final season of Cobra Kai; and a reverential big-screen adaptation of a Pulitzer-winning August Wilson play are some of the highlights among the new films and series hitting Netflix in November.
On Nov. 7, action and mystery drama Outer Banks returns to Netflix. The first half of season four ended with several cliff-hangers for the Pogues, many of which should be resolved, to some degree, in the second half of the season. Over on Kildare Island, Rudy Pankow’s JJ probably gets the biggest bomb dropped on him when he learns that he’s not the son of his alcoholic and abusive father, Luke. The cast have promised “craziness” so expect some more jaw-dropping revelations.

Amazon’s head of Pan-English scripted originals Rola Bauer is exiting her role at the tech giant.
Bauer, who was elevated to the position in 2022 as part of a restructuring following Amazon’s $8.5 billion acquisition of MGM, previously served as MGM’s president of international TV.
An individual familiar with the matter tells TheWrap that the decision was made by Bauer, who is looking to “return to her entrepreneurial roots” and pursue options outside the company. The separation was a mutual decision with Amazon and her official date of leave remains to be determined.
During her tenure over the past two years, the Pan-English division has produced six projects, including “Harlan Coben’s Lazarus” starring Sam Claflin and Bill Nighy, “Haven” with Sophie Turner, “Quarter Life” with Riz Ahmed and “The Girlfriend” with Robin Wright and Olivia Cooke.

International TV veteran Rola Bauer is stepping down from her role as Amazon MGM Studios’ head of English-language global original series produced outside the U.S.
The parting is amicable and instigated by Bauer. The seasoned producer and creative executive joined MGM in 2020 as president of international TV production. The scope of her role changed after Amazon’s 2022 acquisition of MGM to focus on a specific type of content that Amazon MGM Studios dubbed Pan-English global originals — projects produced in English but outside the U.S. The team put an emphasis on glossy event series that can travel well across territories and cultures.
As Amazon and MGM fine-tune the company’s hierarchy and strategy, Bauer decided it was a good time to return to producing and entrepreneurial content packaging and development efforts. Bauer’s executive team will be absorbed into the larger Amazon Studios structure. Bauer will help steer the...
