Nexstar revives Las Vegas New Year’s Eve countdown special

Nexstar Media Group is reviving its annual New Year’s Eve countdown special and fireworks show from Las Vegas, the company said on Tuesday.

The special, called “Coast-to-Coast Countdown to 2025,” will be produced by Klas-tv (Channel 8), Nexstar’s CBS affiliate in Las Vegas, and will feature guest appearances and performances, a countdown to midnight and a fireworks show over the iconic Las Vegas strip.

In addition to the countdown in Las Vegas, the show will spotlight New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day festivities from throughout the United States, fronted in large part by coverage from Nexstar-owned or operated stations in major markets like New York, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Honolulu, Denver and Tampa.

These savvy prognosticators from major media outlets have chimed in with their first round of predictions, and they say the race is between Paul Giamatti (“The Holdovers”) and Cillian Murphy (“Oppenheimer”). The other three Oscar nominees are Bradley Cooper (“Maestro”), Jeffrey Wright (“American Fiction”) and Colman Domingo (“Rustin”).

If you’re hoping for drama at this year’s Academy Awards, we suggest looking somewhere other than the Best Director race. Gold Derby’s Oscar Experts from major media outlets unanimously predict that there’s a “near zero” chance Christopher Nolan (“Oppenheimer”) won’t be taking home this trophy. The filmmaker has already claimed precursor prizes at the Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards, and is also the favorite at the upcoming BAFTAs and DGA Awards.

For the record, Nolan’s fellow nominees in the director category are Yorgos Lanthimos (“Poor Things”), Jonathan Glazer (“The Zone of Interest”), Martin Scorsese (“Killers of the Flower Moon”) and Justine Triet (“Anatomy of a Fall”). Not making an appearance in this race is Greta Gerwig (“Barbie”), who was shockingly snubbed on nominations morning — though she is nominated as a screenwriter.
