Fabula-Fremantle’s “Hot Sur,” The Mediapro Studio’s “El Mal” and “Two Nights in Lisbon,” from Portugal’s Hop Films and the U.K’s Heroes Films, look like potential standouts at next week’s Content Americas Copro Pitch 2024, one of its industry centerpieces.

These series projects will be joined by crime mystery thriller “Delito,” from Barcelona’s Grup Focus TV & Films, behind banner Amazon Original “Reina Roja,” “Iron Woman,” a tumultuous political saga from Brazil-based Jarsom Wayans, two high concept doc series – Argentina’s “Climate Migrants” and Brazil’s “Mystery of the Megafauna” – and bio doc feature “Farraquito, a Flamenco Story,” profiling the famed flamenco bailaor.

Beauty queen, rebellious daughter of the head of Portugal’s secret service, housewife fascinated by Che Guevara, fighter – “Annie” Silva Pais was many, many things. Now, she is also the subject of Portuguese period drama “Cuba Libre.”

“I have been thinking about this story for 20 years,” admits creator Henrique Oliveira ahead of its bow at Berlinale’s Series Market Selects.

“That’s when I first read an article about her in [a local newspaper] Expresso. I fell in love right away. This woman was ahead of her time.”

While Oliveira, who also directs, had to wait decades to realize his dream, it actually worked out for the best, he claims.

“In the past few years, so many things have changed, especially when it comes to streaming. The TV market is completely different now. I had all this time to mature, to [figure out how to] pay tribute to this woman in the best possible way,” he says.

Italian crime drama The Good Mothers is among the seven titles selected for Berlinale (February 16-26) Series strand.

The Disney+ series is directed by the UK’s Julian Jarrold, whose credits include Kinky Boots, Becoming Jane and Brideshead Revisted, and Italian filmmaker Elisa Amoruso. The Good Mothers is a UK-Italy co-production and follows three women trying to bring down the Italian mafia.

The first two episodes of the six-part series is one of five series world premiering at Berlinale.

Exclusive: Keshet International has secured rights to Cuba Libre, a buzzy drama about a follower of Cuban revolutionary Che Guevara that’s being billed as one of Portugal’s most ambitious television series ever. The six-part biopic, based on the life of Ana Maria Silva Pais, will form part of Ki’s slate at Mipcom Cannes next month.

Produced by Hop! Films for Portugal’s public service broadcaster Rtp, the drama follows newcomer Beatriz Gordinho in the lead role of Annie, a young Portuguese woman joined the Cuban revolution and gave everything to Che Guevara. The show debuts on Rtp tomorrow (September 21) and you can watch the trailer below, with English subtitles.

Banijay Rights has taken worldwide distribution on Portuguese-language drama “Vidago Palace,” it was announced Tuesday by Caroline Torrance, head of scripted for Banijay.

It is the first time Banijay Rights, the international distribution arm of Banijay Group, has taken distribution rights on a Portuguese-language drama. Torrance said the move was part of the company’s continuing expansion of its non-English language scripted portfolio.

The six-part series also marks the first drama co-production between broadcasters Rtp in Portugal and Tvg in Spain. It is produced by Spain’s Portocabo and Portugal’s Hop!

Set against the backdrop of a luxury hotel and health resort in 1936, “Vidago Palace” follows the love story between two young people from different classes who must overcome numerous obstacles to be together. It is directed by Henrique Oliveira and stars Mikaela Lupu, David Seijo, Pedro Barroso and Anabela Teixeira.
