Keke Palmer is heading to The Burbs as Peacock is adapting the beloved cult movie! Here's what we know! TV adaptations of movie comedies have been a staple for the business for decades. Most of the time, they go for famous films to try and bring that spirit to TV. There's also been some sequel series to past films and it's good to see TV work these films into a series, often successful.
Peacock, in particular, has been doing this with the Ted series based on the Seth McFarlane films. That's with the sequel series to Saved By the Bell and Punky Brewster and Bel-Air, a darker reboot of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Now, Peacock is getting into it again with plans to adapt the 1989 film The Burbs.
With the show just announced, and no other cast added yet, it's unlikely filming will begin before the end of 2024. It's...

Every town seems to have that one house. The one that children walk by with hushed tones and dare each other to sneak onto the porch or ring the doorbell of. In the movies it’s the Myers House, 1428 Elm (at least in the later movies), or the House on Neibolt Street—usually run down and harboring a frightening history. In my neighborhood growing up, it was not a dilapidated old house, just one that seemed very out of place among the homes of the working class that surrounded it. It was a huge two-story white house, buttressed with gigantic pillars, and surrounded by a wrought-iron fence. I never saw anyone come in or out and I always wondered who lived there. In my mind it was a rich old Mrs. Deagle from Gremlins type, and I wondered, “what’s going on in there?” That question is the engine that...

After the massive success of Airplane! (1980), the horror world decided to try spoofing the hand that feeds; in short order we were dealt Saturday the 14th, Student Bodies, National Lampoon’s Class Reunion, and Pandemonium (all from ’81 to ’82). Mileage may vary of course; comedy is completely subjective—you either laugh or you don’t. Needless to say, there are moments from each of these films that I find entertaining; from smiles to chuckles and sometimes even a laugh or two. But there is another film that no one seems to talk up much, and that’s Greydon Clark’s Wacko (1982). As uneven as the rest, it nevertheless boasts an impressive cast and an energy that wins you over; and now that Vinegar Syndrome has released it on a solid Blu-ray, you can enjoy every groan, titter, eye roll, and yes, laugh, in the privacy of your own home.

Nickelodeon’s Henry Danger will join The Thundermans and iCarly in surpassing the 100-episode mark. The network has ordered an additional 10 episodes of the series, TV’s number-one live-action show with kids 2-11 and kids 6-11. The order brings Henry Danger‘s series’ total to 117 episodes, making it Nick’s longest-running live-action sitcom, currently in its fifth season.
In the 100th episode, titled “Man Cave Self Destruct,” after Schwoz’s family reunion causes chaos in the Man Cave, Captain Man reveals a “Superheroes Only” room in the Man Cave for peace and quiet. Jealous, Charlotte, Jasper and Schwoz make a cooler room to show them up. As the gang fights over who gets the better room, things get blown out of proportion.
Created by Dan Schneider and Dana Olsen, Henry Danger follows the adventures of Henry Hart (Jace Norman) who gets selected by superhero Captain Man (Cooper Barnes) to be his apprentice.

Be it in big cities or small towns, people have spied on their neighbours, and assumed the worst about them, since we traded a nomadic hunter-gatherer society for permanent houses. It was, however, Alfred Hitchcock (and screenwriter John Michael Hayes) who cemented the fine cinematic tradition of snooping on adjacent residents and the suspicion of murder. 1954's New York City set suspense thriller Rear Window saw a housebound photographer with a broken leg, too much time on his hands and a good set of camera lenses peering into windows and assuming the worst. A few decades later, at the tail end of Regan-era conformity, Joe Dante (and screenwriter Dana Olsen) completely re-imagined the concept to comedic effect on the fertile satirical ground of the suburbs. The...

Written by Dana Olsen (Going Berserk) and directed by Joe Dante (Gremlins, The Howling), The ‘Burbs is a comedy-horror hybrid that, for me, was a staple film of my childhood, a movie I was probably too young to be watching, yet couldn’t get enough of. I was very excited to hear that Arrow, a company I am a fan of, were bringing out The ‘Burbs on Blu-ray, for the first time in the UK, with a director’s cut, and a smorgasbord of extras.
A stellar cast, featuring heavyweight acting talent like Tom Hanks, Bruce Dern, Carrie Fisher, Corey Feldman and Henry Gibson, this is a beautifully dark, hilarious and addictive film that deals with themes like cannibalism,...

Memoirs of an Invisible Man
Directed by John Carpenter
Written by William Goldman and Robert Collector
1992, USA
Chevy Chase is something of a mystery. In the mid-1970s through the late-1980s, the quirky comedian starred in a number of well-known films. Many of said films highlighted Chase’s strongly unique comedic style. Cynicism and goofy charm were the actor’s best attributes and this very appealing personality even seemed to inspire actors today like Jason Lee and Ryan Reynolds. This suave funnyman persona suited Chase well, but as the 80s started winding down, audiences and critics seemed to have grown tired of the actor’s predictability and somewhat stale brand of humor. He did manage, however, to squeeze out one fun little performance in 1992’s Memoirs of an Invisible Man.
Based loosely on H. F. Saint’s 1987 novel of the same name, Memoirs tells the harrowing story of Nick...

Nickelodeon is fortifying its live-action comedy slate with series orders for three new shows, including series from “iCarly” creator Dan Schneider. Shnedier's series, “Henry Danger,” is a crime-fighting comedy centered on 13-year-old Henry, who scores a part-time job as a sidekick-in-training to super crime fighter Captain Man (plaed by Cooper Barnes of “The Perfect Host”). Their colorful adventures throw Henry's otherwise ordinary life absurdly out of balance, yet he must keep his new job a secret from his best friends. Schneider created the series, which has received a 20-episode order, with Dana Olsen (“George of the Jungle”). Also read: ‘Escape From.

Get ready to feel old. It’s the 25th anniversary of Joe Dante’s The 'Burbs, starring Tom Hanks as a suburbanite who tries to uncover the truth about his mysterious new neighbors. It’s one of those underrated gems from the 1980s, full of Dante’s signature black humor. Screenwriter Dana Olsen’s approach sums up the movie best: “As a kid, it was fascinating to think that Mr. Flanagan down the street could turn out to be Jack the Ripper. And where there's fear, there's comedy. So I approached The 'Burbs as Ozzie and Harriet meet Charles Manson.” We don’t want to spoil the ending of the movie for you, but things get a little crazy for Hanks’ Ray Peterson. The Playlist has spotted the...

Some movies will always make me laugh, but let’s face it; the same movies might make others yawn. Comedy is tricky business, the hardest genre to pull off form script to screen. I’ve put together a list of 10 underrated or dismissed comedies that deserve a first chance or even a second chance at recognition. Humor is subjective, but gives these flicks a chance and I promise you will enjoy yourself.
Take a look at the list and let me know what you think and what your list might look like.

Let’s face it. We can’t hide it. We all have those movies that we like that others would shun. These are guilty pleasures: the ones that aren’t that great but we love for some reason or another. Here are mine. Be sure to list yours in the comments, if you’d like.
Last Action Hero (1993)
Rotten Tomatoes: 38%
Actors: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Austin O’Brien, F. Murray Abraham, Art Carney, Charles Dance
Director: John McTiernan/Writers: Shane Black and David Arnott
Here’s the thing: I will defend this movie’s concept till Doomsday. A movie about a kid with a magic ticket that gets pulled into an Arnold Schwarzenegger movie? Genius concept. Yes, the kid is annoying. Yes, the movie doesn’t reach the heights of a McTiernan/Black team-up as well as one might think. It’s interesting to note that McTiernan isn’t working as much...

Joe Dante taught us to fear our neighbour in comedy horror, The ‘Burbs. Charlotte takes a look back at an 80s classic…
When you think about classic 80s films, maybe The ‘Burbs isn’t the first to jump to mind. But on closer inspection, this funny, smart, creepy tale, directed by Joe Dante, has pretty much everything you could want from an 80s film and, most importantly, it stands the test of time. Not only in the way it looks and its style of humour, but its subject matter is still relevant today.
How many of us don’t speak to our neighbours? How many of us are wary of the people that live right next to us? There’s always one house on the street you’re not too sure about. There’s always one slightly odd person that does weird things at night. That’s what The ‘Burbs deals with: paranoia,...
