- Son of a Baptist minister. Graduated from the University of Michigan, where he later taught English. Studied drama and playwriting at Yale University. Created a singular reputation for successful adaptations of novels into plays and screenplays, notably 'A Bell for Adano' and 'The World of Suzie Wong'.
- Made his first mark on Broadway with his comedy play 'The Vinegar Tree', which ran for 233 performances at the Playhouse Theatre from November 1930.
- Suffered from a degenerative eye disease from the early 1970's, which effectively curtailed his writing.
- The cast of "Morning's at Seven" at the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles, California was awarded the 2002 Back Stage Garland Award for Outstanding Ensemble Performance.
