It’s been 10 years since David Oyelowo made his U.S. breakthrough portraying Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in “Selma.” Playing the awe-inspiring civil rights leader was an opportunity for the British-Nigerian actor to live up to his surname, which translates to “a king deserves respect.”

Oyelowo has been reflecting on that time in his life a lot more lately, thanks in part to “Becoming King,” a documentary directed by his wife, Jessica Oyelowo, that captures the seven-year journey to bring “Selma” to the big screen.

“It was a big year,” he says of 2014. “There was no way you could know the sheer amount of things that would happen, because at the beginning of it, nothing was happening. ‘Selma’ felt dead. I was in the middle of shooting ‘A Most Violent Year,’ having a good time with that, but just feeling in a state of limbo and then—”

Apple Studios and MacRo Television Studios have added three new actors to Government Cheese, the upcoming Apple TV+ dramedy with David Oyelowo starring in the lead role as well as serving as executive producer through his company Yoruba Saxon.

Created by Paul Hunter and Aeysha Carr, Government Cheese follows Hampton Chambers (Oyelowo), a man recently released from prison who struggles to keep his criminal past at bay and win back his family, all while processing moments of divine intervention that seem to happen with increasing frequency.

The streamer has struck a first-look deal with director Matthew Hamachek.

It is the latest first-look deal for the tech company following similar deals with the likes of David & Jessica Oyelowo, The Morning Show’s Mimi Leder and Black Bird co-creator Dennis Lehane.

In addition to The Dynasty, Hamachek directed HBO’s Tiger Woods documentary Tiger, which won a sports Emmy in 2022.

He started his career working on the Oscar-nominated documentary Street Fight before working on Racing Dreams and If A Tree Falls before co-producing docs including Cartel Land, Amanda Knox, City of Ghosts and The Trade. The dramedy follows Hampton Chambers (played by Oyelowo), a man recently released from prison who struggles to keep his criminal past at bay and win back his family, all while processing moments of divine intervention that seem to happen with increasing frequency.

Missick will play Astoria, Hampton’s wife.

David Oyelowo, who stars in Apple TV+’s series Silo, is expanding his relationship with the streamer.

The actor and his wife and producing partner, Jessica Oyelowo, have signed a first-look deal with Apple TV+ via their Yoruba Saxon banner. Under the multi-year deal, the company will develop both series and feature film projects that Apple will have the first shot at buying.

Yoruba Saxon is a producer of Paramount+’s Lawmen: Bass Reeves (along with MTV Entertainment Studios and 101 Studios); Oyelowo plays the title role, for which he earned a Golden Globe nomination on Monday. The Oyelowos’ company has also produced Nightingale, Captive, A United Kingdom and Come Away, among other titles, and will produce Apple TV+’s forthcoming series Government Cheese along with MacRo Television Studios. The latter is a dramedy based on a short film by Paul Hunter, who co-created the series with Aeysha Carr. Oyelowo is set to star.

Apple has landed a multi-year, first look deal with David and Jessica Oyelowo’s Yoruba Saxon banner.

As part of the deal, Yoruba Saxon will exclusively develop and produce both features and series for Apple TV+ on a first-look basis.

The creator of Lawmen: Bass Reeves is setting the record straight about whether the show is a spinoff of 1883.

When the show was initially ordered, it was billed by Paramount+ as a spinoff of the first Yellowstone prequel.

Chad Feehan, the creator and showrunner of the highly-anticipated new drama, is opening up about what changed to TV Line.

Making the show a spinoff of the critically-lauded 1883 "was an idea we briefly talked about," Feehan explained to the outlet.

"But for me, once I learned some of the things I didn't know about Bass' life, and decided where we wanted to start the story and where we wanted to end the story, it preceded 1883," he added.

In a separate interview with TV Insider, Feehan said the idea to make it a spinoff was talked about before he was hired.

The western series comes from Paramount+’s resident hit-maker Taylor Sheridan as he executive produces alongside David Oyelowo, who stars in the show as the titular lawman, Bass Reeves. “Lawmen: Bass Reeves” has added Dale Dickey, Mo Brings Plenty, Tosin Morohunfola and Margot Bingham in recurring roles. The upcoming anthology series comes from “Yellowstone” creator Taylor Sheridan and will be a Paramount+ original.

Dickey, a character actress best known for her roles in “Hell or High Water” and “My Name Is Earl,” will star as Widow Dolliver, an old woman a press release for the series describes as someone “who has seen it all, and who does not waste time suffering fools.” Brings Plenty (“Yellowstone”) will portray one of Bass Reeves’ friends, a Choctaw Native American by the name of Minco Dodge. Morohunfola will play a former Union solider-turned-prisoner known as Jackson “Jackrabbit” Cole. Finally, Bingham will play Sara Jumper, “a black Seminole Native American whom Bass will owe a debt of gratitude toward.”

The “Bass Reeves” series from Taylor Sheridan starring David Oyelowo has added two new series regulars, Variety has learned exclusively.

Forrest Goodluck and Lauren E. Banks are both set to star in the show alongside series lead Oyelowo and previously announced cast member Dennis Quaid. The series is based on the true story of the titular lawman. Per the official description, “Reeves, known as the greatest frontier hero in American history, worked in the post-Reconstruction era as a federal peace officer in the Indian Territory, capturing over 3,000 of the most dangerous criminals without ever being wounded.”

Banks will play Jennie, described as “the strong and fiercely loyal wife of Bass Reeves.” Goodluck will play Billy Crow, said to be a “young Cherokee man with an affinity for dime store books and gaudy style.”

It’s impossible to predict how any title will fare on the streaming platform, but I’ll be surprised if this one isn’t quickly lost in the algorithms.
