Ryan Reynolds Reveals His Favorite Lines From ‘Deadpool & Wolverine,’ Accepts Screenwriting Honor and More From Hamilton’s Behind the Camera Awards
Image
While many “Deadpool & Wolverine” quips have become fan favorites, like Gambit’s “I’m boutta’ make a name for myself here,” star and screenwriter Ryan Reynolds has a more sentimental take on which lines were his favorite to write.

“The thing I’m probably most proud of was the Wolverine speech in the van where he just tears Deadpool a new one,” said Reynolds. “To me, it’s one of the most beautiful scenes in the movie because you see what a raw, visceral, powerhouse of an actor Hugh Jackman is. But you also see the roles reversed. You see a character who is never verbose, who is a Clint Eastwood archetype, suddenly going, ‘Oh yeah, man? Well, I can talk too.'”

Reynolds was one of the 25 people honored at Hamilton’s 13th annual Behind the Camera Awards, presented by Variety, which celebrates and recognizes the work of below-the-line filmmakers.

Image
Epic sandworm rides across the desert of Arrakis, a thrilling gladiator battle involving a rhino and a display of the unmitigated feeling of pure Anxiety —those are just a few scenes and characters that have entertained audiences this past year, none of which would be possible without the artisans who make the magic happen behind the scenes.

This year, the Hamilton Behind the Camera Awards Presented by Variety will celebrate the visionary artists who help tell stories through their crafts. “Since we introduced the award in 2006, we have been highlighting the tremendous work happening behind the scenes and all the passionate people who

bring these films to life,” says Hamilton CEO Vivian Stauffer.

“We are honored to present the Hamilton Behind the Camera Awards,” says Variety chief operating and marketing officer Dea Lawrence. “The people working behind the scenes are crucial to film production, and this event will shine a well-deserved spotlight on them.

Will ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ Be a Crafts Contender This Awards Season?
Image
Todd Phillips adds a dark musical twist to “Joker: Folie à Deux” (which premiered at the Venice Film Festival to mixed reviews), giving Joaquin Phoenix’s delusional Arthur/Joker a partner in crime with Lady Gaga’s equally disturbed Lee/Harley Quinn and an escape valve through song and dance.

The “Joker” sequel picks up several years later with the failed comedian and anarchist facing the death penalty for multiple murders and meeting soul mate Harley while incarcerated in Arkham State Hospital. The film plays as surreal musical noir, taking some visual inspiration from Francis Ford Coppola’s “One From the Heart.” There are courtroom histrionics, rioting at Arkham, and bedlam in the streets, wrapped around Arthur’s musical romance with Harley. He croons “When You’re Smiling” and “For Once in My Life,” she encourages him with “Get Happy,” and they host a demented “Sonny & Cher”-inspired variety show together.

‘The Creator’ sound team members Erik Aadahl, Ethan Van der Ryn, Ian Voigt and Tom Ozanich: ‘It was grueling, but very rewarding’ [Exclusive Video Interview]
Image
You get the feeling from talking to four of the Oscar-nominated members from the sound team of the sci-fi action thriller “The Creator” – supervising sound editor/sound designers Erik Aadahl and Ethan Van der Ryn, sound mixer Ian Voigt and rerecording mixer Tom Ozanich – that they have never been through anything quite like the adventure they just experienced providing the sonics for this feature. It was shot on location in many countries throughout Southeast Asia, including Thailand, Nepal, Cambodia, Vietnam and Laos, the director Gareth Edwards eschewing backlot and green screen while recreating the vibe of a small indie production. “We shot it guerilla style, but then fuse all of this technology into what looks and sounds like a $300 million movie but isn’t,” stresses Aadahl.

“Sonically, Gareth wanted to combine this sort of realism using the actual sounds of nature in all of these different countries with the very...

2 Twentieth-Century Giants, 1 Sound Designer — Inside the Explosive ‘Oppenheimer’ and Musical ‘Maestro’
Image
Oscar-winning sound designer/supervising sound editor Richard King has two frontrunners this season with Christopher Nolan’s explosive “Oppenheimer” and Bradley Cooper’s musical “Maestro.” While each offers very different soundscapes, they capture the essence of these two 20th-century giants of quantum physics and music.

For the sound design of the biopic thriller about the father of the atomic bomb, J. Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy), King, Oscar-winning music and sound effects mixer Kevin O’Connell (“Hacksaw Ridge”), and dialogue mixer Gary Rizzo got to create the horrifying sound of the Trinity test explosion along with the sounds of the subatomic world of particles and waves that stirred Oppenheimer’s troubled mind.

For the sound design of the complicated love story between legendary conductor-composer Leonard Bernstein (Cooper) and actress wife Felicia Montealegre (Carey Mulligan), King worked with the Oscar-nominated team from the director’s “A Star Is Born”: production sound mixer Steve Morrow,...

How the Crafts of ‘Joker’ Tell Arthur Fleck’s Story
Joaquin Phoenix
The phenomenon that is “Joker” continues to break records, as Oscar buzz grows for Joaquin Phoenix and several other categories. It is a film filled with visual and sonic clues to help tell the story of his emotional journey – wherever it takes him.

From the squeaking of the apartment door to the single cello becoming a full orchestra, to the costume design. It’s all there to tell you the story, to complement the story and aid with the emotional journey we go on with Fleck as he descends and transforms into Joker. Watch closely as he ascends the stairs: He ascends as if he’s carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders, as he heads up those stairs, home. By the end, it’s a different demeanor entirely. The clues are all there.

Editor Jeff Groth says “The first goal of the editing was to stay out of the way.

Lady Gaga, Bradley Cooper Perform Emotion-filled “Shallow” at 2019 Oscars
Lady Gaga (Ally) and Bradley Cooper (Jackson Maine) have now taken to the 91st Annual Academy Awards (Oscars) stage to perform their chart-topping single “Shallow” from the ‘A Star Is Born’ Soundtrack. The single “Shallow” has been conquering the charts, flooding radio stations across the U.S. and is a high demand fan favorite song. Gaga perform the song in a rock version on the 2019 GRAMMYs awards earlier this month and the rendition was fabulous but nothing compares to when actor Bradley Cooper belts out the lyrics to “Shallow” with Gaga live on a televised awards show just as it was within the ‘A Star Is Born’ movie.

This award show performance of “Shallow” is Gaga and Cooper’s first time performing the song live together with the exception of Gaga’s solo GRAMMYs performance or their joint performance at Gaga’s Enigma residency in Las Vegas, so this Oscars...

Inside ‘A Star Is Born': Watch Bradley Cooper Sing a Cappella to Achieve Film’s ‘All-Encompassing’ Sound (Exclusive Video)
Bradley Cooper
So can Bradley Cooper really sing? Or is his vocal performance with Lady Gaga in “A Star Is Born” the result of a lot of movie magic?

Well, you can see for yourself in this exclusive clip obtained by TheWrap. It’s well known that Cooper and Gaga recorded their vocals live from on-stage performances in front of real crowds, but Cooper explains in this clip that, in terms of what was actually captured, everything you’re hearing is Cooper and Gaga’s isolated vocals mixed together with the dozens of layers of other sounds.

“Because we jumped on real stages with live audiences, we recorded all the vocals live, but we’re literally singing a cappella in terms of what Steve Morrow is recording,” Cooper says in the video clip.
