- Son of Maurice 'Lefty' Flynn and Blanche Shove Palmer.
- Attended private schools Le Rosey in Switzerland and Phillips Exeter in New Hampshire before attending Princeton University. Left school in his junior year to serve as a B-26 bomber pilot in WWII.
- Played for three years with the NY Knicks averaging 11.7 points per game in the regular season and 14.4 pts. in the playoffs. He was the team's first captain as well as its highest paid player.
