John Palmer entered the entertainment industry over forty-five years
ago as a performer on the original Walt Disney production of the Mickey
Mouse Club. He came back to the film industry in the early 80s when he
joined WonderWorks. Late in the 1990s, along with several other
Hollywood professional he formed a production company, now called
Tranquility Base Pictures to develop, finance, produce and distribute
movie and television properties. In addition John is a graduate of the
University of Southern California with a Masters Degree in Finance, and
so brings a powerful business foundation as well as practical
background to any film project. He has contributed to the fields of
museums, expositions/fairs, theme parks, motion picture and television.
John has been involved in every aspect of concept origination, ride,
show and display design, set-model construction,
fabrication-coordination, special & visual effects, production
management, financial administration and, of course, day-to-day
management. As production supervisor, for years he oversaw the creation
of an endless number of show designs, sets, rigs, ships, buildings,
planes, trains and automobiles tra la! A talent, which showed up early
in his carrier, was an ability in special and visual effects. He has a
natural talent for tricks, rigs and gags, stop motion and motion
control and has originated a number of special tools to enhance these
film elements. It was gratifying for him to work again with Disney in
the mid 80s, supplying many of the sets for the then cutting edge 3D,
live special effects driven entertainment spectacular, "Captain EO".
His most memorable project was the film, "The Abyss," where he was in
charge of over all production of special effects ocean going ships, as
well as both "wet" and "dry-for-wet" ship models for this $80 million
production. Finally in mid 1995, he worked on MCA/Universal's award
winning film "Apollo 13." he also worked on "Deep Impact",
"Armageddon", "Space Cowboys" and ending in 2004 with "The Day After
Tomorrow" to mention but a few. During the last ten years he has
written several screen plays, created a barrel full of treatments and
produced a number specialty films for them parks and museums. In 2000
he co-wrote "Rocket's Red Glare" with a Tranquility Base colleague. The
company produced the film in association with Fox Family Channel, and
in 2005 completed "Deep Rescue" as an executive producer. 2009 he
completed TRUNK as executive producer and it hit the market early 2010.
In addition in late 2009 John went to work with Ilya Sulkind (best
known for the "3&4 Musketeers", "Superman I, II & II", "Santa Clause",
"Christopher Columbus" and other tent pole films) to produce his next
big $100 million film titled "The Abominable Snowman". As Executive
Vice President of Production, John will handle all development and
production for the company.
