The new poster for The Monkey promises that the Stephen King adaptation is “pretty fucking funny.”
As the artwork bluntly states, “It’s a movie about twin brothers who discover a toy monkey that likes killing their family. There is outrageous violence, shocking gore, and unspeakable tragedies.”
Produced by James Wan, the new trip from writer-director Osgood Perkins (Longlegs) opens in theaters on February 21 via Neon.
Theo James, Tatiana Maslany, Elijah Wood, Christian Convery, Colin O’Brien, Rohan Campbell, and Sarah Levy star.
When twin brothers find a mysterious wind-up monkey, a series of outrageous deaths tear their family apart. 25 years later, the monkey begins a new killing spree forcing the estranged brothers to confront the cursed toy.
Meagan Navarro wrote in her review, “With brisk storytelling efficiency and a playful spirit, The Monkey delivers a Stephen King adaptation like no other. Perkins pushes back against logic in favor of entertaining midnight madness,...

2025 is in full swing and a majority of America is probably looking for a means of escape from the literal and figurative flames engulfing their nation. A new entry in the “Zachary Levi only gets kids movies now” canon that’s from the producer of Wonder but not “A Wonder Story” like White Bird (The Unbreakable Boy opens February 21) and the latest installment in England’s beloved marmalade saga (Paddington in Peru opens February 14) should provide families that reprieve.
Something tells me Marvel’s bid to join the fight with Captain America: Brave New World (opens February 14) might not fit the bill for a vocal minority of our citizenry. Heck, I’m surprised an executive order hasn’t come down preventing it from opening. That’s where it seems we’re headed.

Led by Marvel’s “Captain America: Brave New World” (Disney), February will continue the three-month trend of improved box office compared to the previous year. By the end of February, we might be 25 percent of 2024.
Nobody expects that to continue for the full year. If it did, grosses for U.S./Canada theaters would reach $11.5 billion. In 2018 we saw about $12 billion — at current ticket prices, that equates to $15 billion.
January rose 10 percent from last year, but more than two thirds of that gross came from holdovers. “Den of Thieves 2: Pantera” (Lionsgate) was the best of a weak group with $33 million in January, but Universal’s “Dog Man” and Sony’s One of Them Days” will each far exceed that total.
A total of around $550 million in February looks doable; last year was an abysmal $375 million. In the lead will be the new “Captain America,” which is also the first...

Not even a year ago, Osgood Perkins unleashed the devilishly creepy "Longlegs" and set stratospheric expectations for whatever he might have up his sleeve next. Seamlessly blending occultist scares with a skill for finding the dark comedy in hidden corners, the filmmaker's assured direction left many wondering — okay, maybe just me — how he might tackle another horror flick that switched gears entirely. Instead of a freakish deep dive into the most unsettling depths of the human id, how about a horror-comedy that used gruesome kills and over-the-top violence to find the humor in the absurd?
That expectation-defying encore comes sooner than we might've thought with "The Monkey," a breezy adaptation of the Stephen King short story of the same name. It won't take long, however, for viewers to realize this feature feels as loosely connected to its source material as it does to "Longlegs." Having little to no connection to King's story,...

Thanks to our fine friends at Neon, Bloody Disgusting is beyond thrilled to give their Midwestern fans a very early chance to see Osgood Perkins‘ delectably violent Stephen King adaptation The Monkey! Even better, the maestro behind the madness will be there in person!
Join us this Saturday, February 8th at 9:00 Pm for an exclusive screening and a post-film Q&a with Osgood Perkins at Chicago’s historic Music Box Theatre (3733 N Southport Ave). This is one of the most anticipated horror movies of the year, so plan to arrive early as seats aren’t guaranteed. This is first come, first serve.
The hype is real and the beat is strong with this monkey’s drum. Within the first 24 hours, the recent red band trailer passed 43 million views and hit 100 million in the first 72 hours, which Deadline cited as “arguably a record for a non-mpa studio independent horror movie.

In the ’70s and early ’80s, perhaps the only thing that Stephen King liked more than a child with a psychic gift/curse was an inanimate object that becomes possessed by evil. A car, HGVs and even a laundry press lurched into life to wreak destruction, and all of these mechanical menaces made their inexorable way from page to screen, directed by John Carpenter (Christine), King himself and Tobe Hooper (The Mangler).
The Monkey, first published by Gallery magazine in 1980 and revised to feature in King’s 1985 collection of short stories Skeleton Crew, located genuine revulsion and terror in a wind-up toy. Eyes shining with “idiot glee” and lips pulled back in a “carnivorous” grin, the hirsute curio shuddered to life to clap its cymbals… and Death danced. The monkey was, in short, evil incarnate.
The main sustenance is course after course of ketchup-covered set-pieces...
So who better to adapt...

The other night, Joel McHale hosted the 52nd Saturn Awards, which are dedicated to honoring the best in sci-fi, fantasy and horror on the screen, big or small. The big winner of the night was Dune: Part Two, which won five awards, including Best Science Fiction Film, where it beat out the likes of Furiosa: A Mad Max Story and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. And while Dune director Denis Villeneuve may have once again been snubbed at the Oscars, he was rightly lauded at the Saturn Awards.

One recurring line in writer/director Osgood Perkins’ The Monkey cuts right to the heart of the film’s plot and tone: “Everybody dies, and that’s life.” Like Longlegs, Perkins centers his latest around the suffocating, inescapable inevitability of death, only this time, the filmmaker mines that for absurdist laughs instead of chilling dread.
The adaptation of Stephen King’s short story uses its source material as a loose framework for a Final Destination-style, gory comedy romp filled with a nonstop onslaught of over-the-top, Rube Goldberg machine-like elaborate deaths. All of it is a comical, carnage-fueled reminder of the film’s core thesis: Death comes for us all, and it’s quite silly to presume you can stop it.
The first sign that Perkins’ The Monkey won’t be an exact retelling of King’s story comes from a whimsically gnarly opening sequence that introduces a blood-drenched pilot (Adam...

Take what you know about Oz Perkins' filmmaking and set those signatures ablaze. The Monkey is unlike anything Perkins has helmed thus far (complimentary). It's morbidly hilarious, high-energy, and smothered in an avalanche of gore. Perkins' adaptation of Stephen King's short story (included in Skeleton Crew) is a comically bleak confrontation of Death that notches spectacular kill scenes at a brisk clip. Imagine a Twilight Zone episode influenced by Final Destination and an 80s-sized mountain of cocaine — that's The Monkey. I would never have guessed Perkins had this midnighter mentality in his arsenal, holstering his penchant for slow-burn thrills and lingering, whispering dread.

With Sundance wrapped up, much of February’s attention toward the world of cinema will be on Berlinale. This month certainly isn’t stacked for new releases, but there’s a handful of gems and highlights worth having on your radar.
11. Bring Them Down (Christopher Andrews; Feb. 7)
Premiering at TIFF last fall, the Barry Keoghan- and Christopher Abbott-led gritty revenge thriller Bring Them Down marks the directorial debut from Christopher Andrews. Christopher Schobert said in his TIFF review, “It’s occasionally compelling thanks to its haunting, almost otherworldly locations in Ireland. Mainly, though, what stands out are performances of the ever-intense Christopher Abbott, Nora-Jane Noone, and, most notably, Barry Keoghan. But the actors serve a drama that is relentlessly violent and thoroughly unpleasant. It’s a testament to these performers that they make so much of so little.”

After shocking the horror world last year with box office juggernaut Longlegs, director Osgood Perkins returns with a gonzo adaptation of one of Stephen King’s most nihilistic short stories in The Monkey. Revamping the story from a morose, chaotic, paranoid chiller to a balls-out gory black comedy, Perkins continues his movement from slow-horror icon to alt-populist crowd-pleaser with this darkly hilarious tale of a wind-up monkey with a mind of its own. Hal seems like kind of a loser. Having survived a chaotic youth with shitheel twin brother, Bill, Hal has cut himself off from anyone who might care about him, including his estranged son Petey (Colin O’Brien). It’s hard to blame him, though. Hal lived through the deaths of both parents...

Stephen King is quite the prolific author. In addition to countless short stories, the man tends to publish at least one book a year, churning out high-quality stories that terrify readers on a regular basis. That's a wealth of tales for Hollywood to adapt, and they have indeed come knocking at King's door many, many times. His stories are the basis for some absolute classic horror films, including "The Shining" and "Misery," but he's also the writer behind the iconic coming-of-age film "Stand By Me." In the past few years alone, we've gotten great films like "The Boogeyman," "Gerald's Game," "1922," and "Doctor Sleep."
As a result, at any given time, there are tons of King adaptations currently in the works. Some are being planned as films, others as television shows; some of those shows are limited in scope, while others might go on for years. While a handful of...

Stephen King’s The Monkey trailer was so excessive, it was banned from TV (Photo Credit – Instagram)
A new Stephen King adaptation has taken the horror genre to an entirely new level, with a trailer so shockingly violent that it was outright banned from airing on TV.
King’s adaptations, which are well known for pushing boundaries, are never short on controversy, whether it’s the chilling child murders in ‘It,’ the disturbing scenes in ‘Gerald’s Game’ that caused viewers to pass out, or the intense moments from ‘Pet Sematary.’ But the trailer for ‘The Monkey,’ directed by Osgood Perkins, has managed to top them all.

Steven Spielberg is one of the most beloved directors in the history of cinema. Stephen King is one of the most prolific writers in all of popular literature. A big collaboration between these two titans has always felt like a wonderful idea. Spielberg has tried hard to make it happen, as the "Jurassic Park" and "Lincoln" director has long held the rights to King and Peter Straub's book "The Talisman." Despite 40 years of trying, no movie ever materialized. Why not?
King was recently a guest on the latest episode of "The Kingcast," co-hosted by Eric Vespe and Anthony Breznican. In the episode, the author discussed Spielberg's never-realized film adaptation of the 1984 epic. Here's what King had to say about it:

Last March, we heard that production had wrapped on the Stephen King adaptation The Monkey, which is coming our way from the team of producer / genre regular James Wan and director Osgood Perkins, whose credits include The Blackcoat’s Daughter (a.k.a. February), I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House, Gretel & Hansel, and the recent Nicolas Cage horror film Longlegs (you can read our review Here). Longlegs was released by Neon – and they’ll also be giving The Monkey a theatrical release on February 21, 2025. In anticipation of the film’s release, Perkins was interviewed by SFX magazine, and during that interview he discussed the darkly comedic tone he brought to the material, the story’s setting, and the fact that he had to replace the cymbals-playing monkey from King’s short story with a drum-playing monkey.

Update: Neon has sent out a press release to confirm that the distribution deal has closed and they have acquired the worldwide rights to Together.
The original article follows:
JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray had the chance to see the body horror film Together at the Sundance Film Festival and said that “horror fans are going to have a blast” with this one when it makes its way out into the world. (You can read his full 8/10 review at This Link.) Now, it’s looking like Neon will be the distributor to bring this good time to horror fans, as Deadline reports that, after “a days long bidding battle,” Neon is close to securing the worldwide rights to the film. WME Independent has been fielding offers from interested distributors ever since Together‘s premiere screening on the 26th, and Deadline reports that all of the major buyers of indie fare were in the mix.

Fresh off its premiere at Sundance, the horror movie Together has been acquired by distributor Neon in a massive deal estimated to be somewhere in the ballpark of $10 million. It’s the first major deal out of Sundance this year, and Variety was the first to report the news.
Neon will release Together in theaters everywhere on August 1, 2025.
Real-life spouses Alison Brie and Dave Franco star in Together, which comes from first-time writer/director Michael Shanks. The film “puts a meta spin on the body horror film,” and “follows a codependent couple that moves to the remote countryside to become even closer. And they do, on a nightmarish physical level, thanks to a supernatural force.”
Variety details the Sundance bidding war, “A24 was also in the running at other point, with other studios, including Mubi, kicking the tires. It’s not clear what the final price tag is, but sources...

Just six months after Neon’s Longlegs became the highest grossing indie horror movie in the past 10 years, the distributor continues to dominate the indie horror space by breaking another massive record with their next offering. Again directed by Osgood Perkins, the trailer for upcoming Stephen King adaptation The Monkey just passed 109 million views!

Here’s All We Know About Stephen King’s The Monkey So Far (Photo Credit – YouTube)
Stephen King is among the most acclaimed horror writers of the late 20th and early 21st centuries, and his works have been adapted into film and television many times. His short story, The Monkey, was one of the most recent stories to be announced for a film adaptation in 2025. The movie is being produced by James Wan and directed by Osgood Perkins (Longlegs).
The original horror story was published in 1980, during the early days of Stephen King’s career. During that time, he made freelance submissions to Gallery, an erotic magazine founded by Ronald L. Fenton. Alongside Stephen King’s stories, the magazine also published the works of Isaac Asimov and L. Flecther Prouty. The Monkey was subsequently republished in King’s short story collection Skeleton Crew, where it can still be purchased as of writing.

There have been a lot of movies and TV shows based on the works of author Stephen King, but there are also still a good number of King stories that have slipped through the cracks and never received an adaptation. For example, the short story The Monkey has been around for over forty years, but it’s only just now getting the big screen treatment, with Neon planning to give a film based on The Monkey a theatrical release on February 21, 2025. With that date just a few months away, we figured this would be a good time for us to put together a list of Everything We Know About The Monkey.
Story
King’s short story was first published in 1980, in the pages of the adult magazine Gallery, giving subscribers something to read amidst the pictures of nude women. The story was later revised and included in King’s 1985 short story collection Skeleton Crew.

The Monkey director Osgood Perkins reveals why he changed Stephen King's story into a comedy and what the author's reaction was. Based on King's 1980 horror short story, the upcoming movie stars Theo James as twin brothers Hal and Bill, following the characters as they experience a series of shocking deaths after they discover their father's toy monkey. As is revealed in The Monkey's trailer, Perkins has added a great deal of dark comedy to the original King story, in addition to an abudance of blood and gore.
In a recent interview with Empire, Perkins breaks down his approach to The Monkey, affirming that his take on the story is very different from the source material. "I took liberties like a motherf--ker," he says. He reveals that James Wan's production company, Atomic Monster, optioned the rights to King's story several years ago, and that they approached him to direct it.

Presence is an upcoming supernatural horror thriller film directed by Steven Soderbergh from a screenplay by David Koepp. The upcoming film revolves around a family who move into a suburban neighborhood and soon believe their house is haunted. The first reactions to The Monkey are finally here, and the response has been almost universal. Based on Stephen King's short story, the movie revolves around a toy monkey with a thirst for blood. Elijah Wood (Lord of the Rings), Theo James (Divergent), Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black), and more serve as The Monkey's stars. Directed by Osgood Perkins, it is currently preparing for its upcoming February 21 release.
Though the premise is somewhat absurd, The Monkey's early reviews are near-unanimously glowing. Critics adore the movie's sense of humor, shocking brutality, and performances. Theo James (Hal) earned praise, but the majority of the acclaim is directed at Perkins, who appears to have developed a laugh-out-loud critical darling. Many reviewers compared the movie to Final Destination, though it features a far more humorous look at those deaths. Check out some of the reactions below:
I just had the Best time watching The Monkey!

We all know that those little cymbal-crashing toy monkeys are some of the creepiest items to ever hit the market. They just look evil, so it’s no wonder that Stephen King was drawn to them as a source of terror. Now, Osgood Perkins is hoping to do justice to King and the source, with The Monkey arriving in theaters next month. As it turns out, the movie screened just this week. So, did Perkins deliver on the simian scares?
Fortunately for fans of both Stephen King and Osgood Perkins, it looks like The Monkey is just the level of horror fun that will be a crowd pleaser, with those that caught the screening praising it for combining blood and laughs. Check out some of the first reactions to The Monkey below:

Stephen King's delightfully screwed-up stories have been getting the big screen treatment since 1976, but not a single adaptation over the past 49 years looks quite like "The Monkey." That's likely because none of those other movies had Oz Perkins, the creative horror mastermind behind movies like the trippy Nicolas Cage-starrer "Longlegs" and the terrifying slow-burn "The Blackcoat's Daughter," behind the camera. Perkins is clearly suited to the absurdity of the King short story, which was featured in his 1985 book "Skeleton Crew." In the latest issue of Empire magazine, the filmmaker draws direct parallels between the story's cursed toy and his own strange, tragic family life.
Perkins tells the outlet that "The Monkey" actually already had a "very serious script" when he joined the project, one provided by James Wan's Atomic Monster production company. "I felt it was too serious, and I told them: 'This doesn't work for me,...

It’s a toy monkey?
It’s evil, it’s basically the devil.
When twin brothers find a mysterious wind-up monkey, a series of outrageous deaths tear their family apart. Twenty-five years later, the monkey begins a new killing spree forcing the estranged brothers to confront the cursed toy.
Based on the Stephen King short story, and produced by James Wan (The Conjuring, Saw), The Monkey is a new trip from Longlegs writer/director, Osgood Perkins.
Buckle in and check out the crazy trailer below.
The Monkey stars Theo James, Tatiana Maslany and Elijah Wood.
The film hits theaters on February 21st.
In an interview with Empire, the filmmaker says of the gore, “All the death set-pieces were hard to do,” Perkins says. “They all have a Rube Goldbergian connectivity — this happens, then this happens, then this happens…”
The result might not be exactly what audiences are expecting after Longlegs.
