The freshman multi-cam comedy has been picked up for five more episodes, bringing the total episode order to 18. The series debuted in the Friday 8 p.m. timeslot on Oct. 18. Per NBC, the series premiere has pulled in 14 million viewers across all platforms since its debut, while the series itself has improved on its timeslot average by 90% among total viewers and 88% in the key adults 18-49 demographic.

Reba McEntire stars in the series along with fellow cast members Belissa Escobedo, Melissa Peterman, Pablo Castelblanco, Tokala Black Elk and Rex Linn.

Per the official logline, “Bobbie (McEntire) inherits her father’s tavern and is surprised to discover that she has a new business partner, Isabella (Escobedo), a twentysomething half-sister she never knew she had.”

The network has ordered five additional episodes of the first-year comedy starring Reba McEntire. The extra shows will bring the show to a Peak TV-era full season of 18 episodes.

The full-season order comes after Happy’s Place has performed well out of the gate. The series is the most watched of NBC’s four comedies so far this season, averaging 3.49 million on-air viewers for its initial airing, according to Nielsen, and growing substantially with streaming and other delayed viewing. NBC says the Oct. 18 series debut has hit 14 million viewers across all platforms.

The multi-camera comedy stars McEntire as Bobbie, who inherits her late father’s tavern — the Happy’s Place of the title — and discovers she has a partner in Isabella (Belissa Escobedo), a twentysomething half sister Bobbie never knew she had. In terms of streaming, the episode is currently NBC’s best new comedy launch ever on Peacock, based on the three-day average minute viewership.

If streamers are increasingly looking for shows with wide appeal — and they are — it stands to reason that TV networks’ best hope for success is making shows for audiences that aren’t just broad, but whose sensibilities are closer to hyper-normie. The few sitcoms that are even still being made to be broadcast over the air can’t be genre-straddling tone poems like The Bear: premise-wise, less is more. Happy’s Place fits the brief.

The show — which premieres on NBC today — should get extra credit for fitting nearly all its action on a single set: the titular Tennessee tavern. Happy, for whom said tavern was named, died just before the events of the series pilot, leaving the business to his daughter Bobbie (Reba McEntire), who’s already been running the place for many years. But her hopes for seamless continuity in the tavern’s management are scuttled when Happy...

Just over 15 years after “Reba” closed out its six-season run, “Happy’s Place” creator Kevin Abbott reunited with the sitcom’s team to explore a potential “Reba” reboot series.

“I had actually come up with where the characters were at, where their lives were at [and] what was going to be the dynamic was some new characters,” Abbott told TheWrap, noting that executives were initially “very interested” in the idea. However, he added that as time went by and the industry consolidated further, the reboot didn’t move forward “for various financial reasons and rights reasons,” per Abbott.

“I’d spent six months doing this thing and been working on it and Reba [McEntire] was like, ‘well, let’s just do another one … we’ll do something else. I was like, ‘I don’t have another one in my back pocket,'” Abbott recalled. “So I called my wife [Julie Abbott] to complain...

I’m not even a particularly huge Reba McEntire fan, but I know that we don’t deserve Reba McEntire. We, as a society, have not done anything to be worthy of somebody who was one of the all-time great country singers, then became one of the all-time great sitcom actors, then dabbled in being an all-time great award show host and reality show panelist. In her free time, I can only assume that Reba McEntire bowls regular 300 games, prepares a perfect Beef Wellington and has constructed an entirely Nazi-free social media site composed exclusively of substantive conversations and sparkling personalities.

So when I say that Reba McEntire’s new NBC series Happy’s Place is not worthy of Reba McEntire’s talents … well … get in line, Happy’s Place.

Let’s change the unreasonable parameters, then.
