After starting off his career by directing independent dramas like George Washington and All the Real Girls, David Gordon Green shifted over to making stoner comedies like Pineapple Express and Your Highness for a while, then made his horror debut by taking the helm of a full trilogy of Halloween sequels: the 2018 Halloween, Halloween Kills, and Halloween Ends. That trilogy turned out to be rather divisive – some fans love what Green did with them, others were disappointed with how the story played out. Then he was planning to direct a trilogy of sequels to The Exorcist… but when The Exorcist: Believer was poorly received, he stepped away from that project. He’s currently doing the press rounds for his latest film, the family holiday comedy Nutcrackers, and during an interview with MovieWeb he shared advice and encouragement for directors who have the chance to work on established franchises like he...

When Cynthia Erivo was announced in the role of the Wicked Witch of the West for the Wizard of Oz prequel, some took it as a personal offense. People began clubbing the actress into the list of race-swapped characters because previously the character was mainly portrayed by White actresses.
However, Wicked‘s performance at the box office is a clap-back to the haters due to one record it broke. Previously, viewers had hoped that the Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga starrer Joker: Folie à Deux would become the highest-grossing musical, but they were left disappointed. Instead, this achievement was won easily by Jon. M Chu’s directorial in a mere eight days.

Jon Chu‘s Wicked was not short of scandals ahead of its release, especially due to the two main actresses.

Making a big-budget musical seems to be the great white whale for any aspiring director. Many have tried, many have failed. Those include names like Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola, and most recently Todd Phillips. Undeterred, Jesse Eisenberg, fresh off the success of his breakout hit A Real Pain, has signed on to direct his third movie which – wait for it – is set to be a musical comedy.
Indeed, according to Deadline, Julianne Moore and Paul Giamatti are set to co-star in the film which, is about “a shy woman who is unexpectedly cast in a local production of an original musical. Under the spell of the strong-willed and enigmatic director, she loses herself in the role and the high-stakes world of this community theater production.”
Sounds good, right? Given how A Real Pain is, it may well be, but, the non-musical/musical genre has humbled some truly great directors before,...

Pop megastar turned actress Lady Gaga has emerged as one of Hollywood's most in-demand talents since her Academy Award-nominated performance in A Star is Born, and it seems most of the major studios are keen to work with her.
Despite the movie's frosty reception, Gaga received high praise for her turn as Harley "Lee" Quinn in the recent Joker: Folie à Deux, and we have heard that James Gunn wants her to play a different character in the Dcu. Gaga has been rumored to have met with Lucasfilm about a potential Star Wars role, and there are also whispers that she could be lining up a Marvel Studios gig.
Now, scooper Mttsh is reporting that Kevin Feige is interested in bringing Gaga into the MCU fold as a specific character: Dazzler!

I’ve seen many reviews of Joker: Folie A Deux that say the same thing: it has nothing to say. Whatever your thoughts are on the movie, claiming that the movie has no message or is not making a statement is blatantly wrong. Maybe you just missed the message, and that’s fine as it was hidden behind layers of irony and musical numbers.
***Spoilers for Joker: Folie A Deux below.***
Before we dive into the message of the movie, I want to state my thoughts on the movie as a whole. There were parts I thought really worked and parts I felt fell completely flat. The musical numbers felt strange and awkward even when the message of the movie is considered. The scene in which Arthur is dragged into the showers and raped by the guards was disturbing and unnecessary to the plot. I actually really liked the ending,...

The new Dcu kicks off with Creature Commandos this December, but the inaugural movie, James Gunn’s Superman, will be coming next year. While the new shared universe revamps the DC continuity, the brand doesn’t shy away from side stories either, with bonus Batman projects like the Todd Phillips Joker movies and Matt Reeves’ The Batman movies with The Penguin spin-off. However, there’s another director who is interested in telling his own side story with the famous Caped Crusader.

How Does Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker: Folie A Deux Solve A Mystery About Heath Ledger’s The Dark Knight (Photo Credit – Instagram)
For over 16 years, fans have been trying to crack the mystery behind Heath Ledger’s Joker scars in The Dark Knight. The iconic villain’s backstory—especially how he got those ghastly Glasgow smiles—was deliberately left vague. Some theories hinted at an abusive father. Others suggested the Joker did it to comfort his wife. But it wasn’t until Joker: Folie à Deux hit theaters in 2024 that the mystery was finally (and maybe controversially) solved.
In Joker: Folie à Deux, Joaquin Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck—who has already carved out his own dark path in Joker (2019)—never truly wanted to be the Joker. But the sequel flips the script, with Fleck renouncing his chaotic persona and confessing his crimes. Meanwhile, Ledger’s Joker in The Dark Knight fully embraced the villainous role,...

When it was announced that Dwayne Johnson’s next flick, Red One, will be a Christmas movie, with a stellar $250 million budget, and the likes of Chris Evans, Jk Simmons, and Kiernan Shipka playing the leading roles, fans thought that they had a masterpiece on their hands.
A week since the movie hit theatres, these hopes have been dashed to the ground. For many, the movie looks all set to pass into oblivion even before the Christmas spirit officially sets in. And if its dismal run at the box office is any hint, it is headed down that road.

On the heels of the recent news that Lady Gaga is set to make a cameo appearance in the second season of Netflix's Wednesday, we're hearing that the pop megastar turned actress might be planning a trip to the galaxy far, far away.
According to scooper My Time To Shine Hello, Gaga has met with Lucasfilm about a mysterious role in an upcoming Star Wars project.
That's about all we have to go on for the time being, but Gaga has emerged as one of Hollywood's most in-demand actors since her Academy Award-nominated performance in A Star is Born, so it wouldn't be at all surprising if she's been lining up some major franchise roles.
We recently learned that Disney and Lucasfilm are hoping to get the theatrical side of the Star Wars franchise back on track after the disappointing box office performance of The Rise of Skywalker. Though...

When the internet first caught wind of Gigi Hadid dating Bradley Cooper, many were intrigued by this seemingly unexpected pairing. They were first spotted together on October 5, 2023, sharing a ride after dining at Via Carota, a nice and quaint Italian hotspot in New York City’s West Village.
Gigi donned a tan miniskirt, white crop top, and leather jacket, while Bradley went with a relatively more casual vibe in a blue T-shirt, plaid jacket, and cap. They then hopped into an SUV together and zoomed off. Not much, however, was made of this sighting then.

Though the movie does have its share of defenders, Joker: Folie à Deux has been the subject of a lot of ridicule over the past few weeks - but we weren't expecting someone that was actually involved with bringing film to the screen to take such scathing shots.
During an appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience, actor and comedian Tim Dillon - who has a small role as an Arkham security guard - shared his blunt, unfiltered take on Todd Phillips' highly-divisive sequel.
“It’s the worst film ever made,” Dillon said. “I think what happened, after the first Joker, there was a lot of talk like, ‘Oh, this was loved by incels. This was loved by the wrong kinds of people. This sent the wrong kind of message. Male rage! Nihilism!’ All these think pieces. And then I think, ‘What if we went the other way,’ and now...

The criticism of Joker: Folie à Deux continues a month into its theatrical run, and this time, the call is coming from inside the house.

Comedian Tim Dillon, who has a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it role in “Joker: Folie à Deux” as an Arkham Asylum security guard, recently appeared on “The Joe Rogan Experience” and trashed Todd Phillips’ controversial “Joker” sequel as “the worst film that has ever been made.” The sequel earned mostly negative reviews and flopped at the box office with $58 million domestically and $204 million worldwide, a far cry from the 2019 original’s $1 billion gross.

Warner Bros. must have had every confidence in Joker: Folie à Deux director Todd Phillips to deliver a hit after his first film became the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time (only recently surpassed by Deadpool and Wolverine), but the highly divisive sequel didn't come anywhere close to matching its predecessor's success.
The studio was hoping to see Folie à Deux recoup at least some of its costs when it arrived on Digital platforms late last month, but the movie failed to make much of an impact and only managed to reach fourth place on both the iTunes and Fandango charts.
It would be foolish of the studio to even attempt to put a positive spin on this, and Wbd CEO David Zaslav has now acknowledged that Joker 2 was "disappointing."

Joker: Folie à Deux will go down as one of the biggest failures at the 2024 box office after its dismal earnings and speedy debut on PVOD. Todd Phillips’ musical sequel earned $204M worldwide, paling compared to the original’s staggering $1B+ blockbuster performance. Opinions differ significantly about the film’s quality (depending on who you talk to). However, most say they feel betrayed by the follow-up, saying it lacks the spirit of the original. Regardless of how you think about the film, money talks in Hollywood, and right now, the Joker sequel comes off like a bad joke. When the film failed to launch above expectations (or remotely close), WB announced a digital release date less than a week into the drama’s theatrical run. Unfortunately, Fandango says sales for Joker: Folie à Deux match the underwhelming performance of its cinematic showing.

Warner Bros. Discovery gave up on Joker: Folie à Deux shortly after its disastrous opening weekend and quickly announced a Premium Video On Demand (PVOD) release mere weeks after it hit theaters.
However, if the studio was hoping people would watch the Joker sequel at home, executives are likely to be disappointed all over again.

Robert De Niro has a reputation for greatness. Looking back at his entire filmography, there are plenty of examples of how excellent of an actor he is. From Goodfellas to the Godfather franchise, Taxi Driver, and even The Intern, versatility is just one of his many talents.

When an actor is as talented as De Niro, it is only natural that they would have peculiar ways to prepare for their roles. However, sometimes, these methods of getting into character end up clashing with the methods of other actors. During an interview, it was revealed by the director of The Joker that De Niro and Joaquin Phoenix ended up having quite a clash on the set of the film.

Well, at least Hideo Kojima agrees with Quentin Tarantino: “Joker: Folie à Deux” just might be considered the film of the year…in a decade or two.
The “Death Stranding” video game creator Kojima praised Todd Phillips’ critically panned box-office disaster sequel on X, formerly known as Twitter, saying that in the next 10 to 20 years, “Joker: Folie à Deux” could be considered a classic film.
“Over the next 10 or 20 years, this film’s reputation will likely change along with the permeation of hero movies to come. It may take some time for it to become a true ‘folie à deux,’” Kojima wrote. “But there is no doubt that everyone in the audience loved Joaquin and Gaga in this film.”
Kojima’s full statement is as follows:

Kojima also noted that there was “no doubt that everyone in the audience loved Joaquin [Phoenix] and [Lady] Gaga in this film.”
In his lengthy post, Kojima made a point that the Joker‘s sequel starts off with an animation sequence “depicting a story of Joker and Joker’s shadow.” The film moves on to a trial that poses the “question of his multiple personality,...

The Paddington franchise got its next installment Paddington in Peru with early critics raving about the film’s success. Although the new movie didn’t surpass its predecessors, it did manage to impress reviewers and maintain the series’ fan following.
However, the surprising factor is that the upcoming movie’s Rotten Tomatoes score managed to overtake not only Joker 2, but also Venom 3. Considered the weakest out of the famed animated franchise, the new film still managed to do what both Joker: Folie à Deux and Venom: The Last Dance couldn’t.

“Death Stranding” creator and video game auteur Hideo Kojima is joining the likes of Quentin Tarantino in defending “Joker: Folie à Deux” amid the sequel’s disastrous theatrical release. The movie bombed with critics and has earned just over $200 million at the worldwide box office after one month in theaters, a far cry from the $1 billion gross of the 2019 original. Kojima wrote to his 3.9 million X followers that he predicts the film’s reception is likely to change over the next decade or two.
“I watched ‘Joker: Folie à Deux.’ The beginning of the film is an animation sequence, reminiscent of the nostalgic ‘Looney Tunes,’ depicting a story of Joker and Joker’s shadow,” Kojima wrote. “In the trial that follows, the question of his multiple personality is argued from beginning to end. Is the Joker Arthur? Is the Joker another personality (his shadow)? Who exactly is Arthur? This revelation eventually transforms into a meta-perspective.

So… Joker: Folie à Deux is pretty great, right? Well, the reviews are mixed with a majority of people claiming that it’s a sh*t movie. However, Quentin Tarantino and Hideo Kojima are just some of the cinephiles who are actually loving it!

Joker: Folie à Deux has divided opinions, though the consensus on the DC Comics sequel is largely negative. Filmmaker Todd Phillips arguably dropped the ball with his musical follow-up to the 2019 hit, delivering a movie rejected by fans and non-fans alike.
However, Metal Gear Solid and Death Stranding creator Hideo Kojima has now weighed in and appears to believe the movie will eventually be viewed in a very different light.
That's up for debate, though we'd be lying to say Kojima doesn't make a good case for giving Joker: Folie à Deux a second chance.

Acclaimed film director Todd Phillips wants movie theaters to stop playing commercials before movies start. Phillips recently spoke to Empire magazine as part of a discussion about the future of the entertainment industry. He said that theatergoers who pay for tickets deserve an uninterrupted viewing experience. “We’ve paid for our tickets. We’re excited to be there. But the commercials kind of ruin the mood,” Phillips stated.
Phillips is not alone in his views. Many industry figures shared their thoughts on issues like streaming services versus theaters. Sean Baker, who directed “Anora,” worried that more filmmakers are turning to streaming and digital cameras instead of traditional film.
But Paul Feig, the creator of “Freaks and Geeks,” was optimistic. He said streaming gives opportunities for movies and television shows that may not otherwise get made.

Joker: Folie à Deux director Todd Phillips has one solution to improve movie theaters: forgoing showing commercials ahead of a film’s screening.
Speaking to Empire magazine as part of a filmmakers’ poll on what the future of movies and entertainment would look like — from artificial intelligence to streamers vs. theaters and beyond — the multi-Oscar nominee gave an answer slightly different from the rest.
“Stop showing commercials before the movies,” he said. “We’ve paid for our tickets. We’re excited to be there. The commercials tend to take the air out of the room.” Presumably, the filmmaker is referencing the ads that play before the trailers for upcoming features.

Todd Phillips was expected to have a big success in theaters last month, but instead, audiences experienced a major flop that hasn’t happened in a while. Joker: Folie à Deux received very negative feedback from both critics and viewers.
As of October 31, 2024, Joker: Folie à Deux has made $58.1 million in the U.S. and Canada, and $143.5 million in other countries, for a total of $201.6 million worldwide.
The movie needs to make $450 million to break even, but Warner Bros. thinks it only needs $375 million. They later said that the film could lose the studio between $125 and $200 million while it’s in theaters, mainly because it had a much bigger budget than the first movie, which was one of the highest-grossing R-rated films ever.
While still dealing with the movie’s poor release, Phillips took part in a Hollywood poll for Empire magazine about the future of going to the movies.

Going to the movies can be a hit-or-miss experience. In addition to possible visual and audio issues, your good time can also be ruined by unruly patrons, overpriced food and beverages, and filthy seats. Even if everything goes well, one more element has become increasingly overbearing in recent years: commercials. There’s nothing like going to the movies and having to sit through nearly 10-20 minutes worth of commercials (and that’s not counting the previews), and Joker: Folie à Deux director Todd Phillips has had enough.
As more people turn to streaming services instead of the theater, Phillips told Empire that one simple fix could help make the theatrical experience more enjoyable. “Stop showing commercials before the movies,” he said. “We’ve paid for our tickets. We’re excited to be there. The commercials tend to take the air out of the room.” I mean, he’s not wrong.

Todd Phillips has a punchline for how theaters can combat the rise of streaming: take out the pre-movie ads.
The “Joker: Folie à Deux” director told Empire magazine that “commercials” have become detrimental to the cinema-going experience. Instead, movie theaters should forego ads all together, Phillips said.
“Stop showing commercials before the movies. We’ve paid for our tickets. We’re excited to be there,” Phillips said. “The commercials tend to take the air out of the room.”
Presumably, Phillips is referring to actual commercials, and not the pre-feature trailers for other films.
In the case of “Joker: Folie à Deux,” other components seemed to be what drove audiences out of the room. Fellow filmmaker Paul Schrader said he couldn’t get through more than 25 minutes of the critically panned sequel.

Empire Magazine published a poll of leading filmmakers on the future of cinema. George Miller, Sofia Coppola, Sean Baker, and many others weighed in on the theatrical vs. streaming debate, the use of AI, and what movie theaters can do to stay relevant and get people to come out rather than stay in and watch at home.
On that last point, “Joker: Folie à Deux” director Todd Phillips has a novel suggestion: “Stop showing commercials before the movies,” he told theater owners. “We’ve paid for our tickets. We’re excited to be there. The commercials tend to take the air out of the room.”

“Joker” and “The Hangover” director Todd Phillips recently participated in a Hollywood poll for Empire magazine about the future of moviegoing and expressed his desire for movie theaters to get rid of showing commercials before films. Phillips joined fellow filmmakers like George Miller, Sean Baker and Daniel Scheinert in being confident that movie theaters will never go out of style, but that doesn’t mean the theatrical experience couldn’t use a few updates.
“We are hard-wired to gather in the sharing of stories,” Miller said about why movie theaters won’t cease to exist in the future. “I believe cinemas are, for the most part, doing everything they can…”
Phillips suggested theaters could be doing a bit more, especially to combat the desire from audiences just to stream films at home. He sent theaters the following message: “Stop showing commercials before the movies. We’ve paid for our tickets.

Director Quentin Taratino walks the walk when it comes to originality: he's been doing it his way since the '90s, making lots of movies that have gone on to become modern classics, including Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill and Inglourious Basterds. Like a lot of people, he's not enthusiastic about Hollywood's interest in remaking everything under the sun. But unlike a lot of people, he still isn't interested in those remakes even when they're great.
Take the example of Denis Villeneuve's two recent Dune movies, which adapt Frank Herbert's seminal 1965 sci-fi novel. Both movies received widespread critical acclaim. But as far as Tarantino is concerned, he watched David Lynch's 1986 Dune movie and doesn't need to revisit that story. “I saw [David Lynch’s] ‘Dune’ a couple of times. I don’t need to see that story again,” he said on The Bret Easton Ellis Podcast. “I don’t need to see spice worms.

Quentin Tarantino has no desire to watch a remake of a preexisting film or show, even if it’s made by a fellow auteur like Denis Villeneuve.
Tarantino said during “The Bret Easton Ellis Podcast” that he still has not watched either (Villeneuve) “Dune” movie, and probably never will.

When it comes to sequels, Hollywood has seen its fair share of hits and misses, and Joker 2 unfortunately turned out to be one of the biggest misses of the year. The first Joker film directed by Todd Phillips broke box office records and made over $1 billion globally when it was released in 2019.
Joaquin Phoenix’s powerful portrayal of the disturbed Arthur Fleck, whose spiral into insanity revealed a complex origin story for the notorious Gotham villain, impressed audiences. So, naturally, when Joker: Folie à Deux was announced, expectations were sky-high.

The sequel was expected to be another smash since it featured a unique musical approach and starred Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn. Joker 2, however, was far from attaining the same level of popularity and has even been labeled a box office failure, despite the film’s stellar cast.

The “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” director added that Hollywood’s reliance on reboots and remakes was not something he found interesting as an audience member.
“It’s one after another of this remake and that remake,...

“Joker: Folie à Deux” is a movie directed by Todd Phillips starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga. With Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, and Harry Lawtey.
Todd Phillips set out to create a film that defies traditional genres, leaving viewers in a state of emotional turmoil similar to that of Arthur Fleck: teetering on the brink of despair and always flirting with utter degradation. He achieves this, but the outcome is not always pleasant or easy to digest.
“Joker: Folie à Deux” shines brightly at times: it is technically well-crafted, with complete creative freedom, and carries a message that is as profound as it is cynical and overwhelming. This film will neither appeal to everyone nor has it been well-received by the majority, as “Joker: Folie à Deux” is not intended to be an enjoyable experience; it aims to degrade Arthur in Arkham to his ultimate downfall.

Joaquin Phoenix might just be the master architect of one of the best comic book adaptations of all time. With his 2019 film Joker, Phoenix began a silent revolution, and like the streets of Gotham, a splintering rage consumed the fans when the awaited sequel failed to perform well. In many ways, the events of Joker: Folie à Deux mirrored the upsetting downfall of the actor in the real world.
Phoenix was expected to deliver another masterpiece, especially considering how accurately he understood and captured the unbridled insanity of the character. But Todd Phillips, the director extraordinaire, did not visualize a world away from the saturated Batman saga. He simply picked up the script of Martin Scorsese’s 1982 film The King of Comedy and gave it a good dust-off.

Famed director Quentin Tarantino is a vocal supporter of the Todd Phillips sequel “Joker: Folie à Deux.” In a recent podcast, Tarantino spoke enthusiastically about the film even as it has struggled at the box office compared to the first “Joker.” Tarantino praised Joaquin Phoenix’s performance as “one of the best” he’s seen. He also drew comparisons between the sequel and Oliver Stone’s “Natural Born Killers.”
Tarantino suggested Phillips directed “Folie à Deux” in the spirit of the Joker character. “The entire concept, even him spending the studio’s money – he’s spending it like the Joker would spend it,” Tarantino said. This subversive approach may explain the film’s commercial underperformance, which has earned just over $200 million globally so far compared to the first film’s $1 billion plus.
Francis Ford Coppola also praised Phillips for “staying one step ahead of the audience.” However, Paul Schrader, who...

Quentin Tarantino was "tremendously" impressed by 'Joker: Folie a Deux'.The 'Reservoir Dogs' moviemaker has admitted he wasn't sure what to expect when he went to see the comic book film - which features Joaquin Phoenix opposite pop star Lady Gaga - but he found he was "caught up" in the story and the musical numbers.Speaking on 'The Bret Easton Ellis Podcast', Tarantino said of the film: "I really, really liked it, really. A lot. Like, tremendously, and I went to see it expecting to be impressed by the filmmaking. But I thought it was going to be an arms-length, intellectual exercise that ultimately I wouldn’t think worked like a movie, but that I would appreciate it for what it is. "And I’m just nihilistic enough to kind of enjoy a movie that doesn’t quite work as a movie or that’s like a big, giant mess to some degree.
