Sean S. Cunningham will always be primarily remembered for directing the original Friday the 13th, but he has taken the helm of some other movies that are worth checking out, like 1985’s The New Kids and the subject of the latest entry in our Black Sheep video series, DeepStar Six (get it Here).

Released in 1989 and often compared to its fellow ’89 release Leviathan (which has also gotten the Black Sheep treatment), DeepStar Six was scripted Geoff Miller and Lewis Abernathy – which is interesting because movies like Leviathan and DeepStar Six exist because James Cameron’s The Abyss was coming out the same year, and Abernathy and Cameron are pals. Abernathy even had an acting role in Titanic.

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off stars Matthew Broderick and Alan Ruck recently sat down for a one-on-one conversation to discuss a variety of topics, most importantly John Hughes’ 1986 comedy. But its status as a teen movie classic may not have happened without the pair’s work in the theater.

Before “ER,” “Chicago Hope” and “The Good Doctor,” there was a great little medical drama called “St. Elsewhere.” Today, it’s not unusual to have topics like rape, abortion, domestic abuse, breast cancer discussed. Indie Rights has acquired worldwide rights to Chasing the Rain, the drama written and directed by Cindy Jansen that stars Matt Lanter. The distributor has set a December 18 bow on VOD and digital platforms.

In Jansen’s debut feature, which she also produced, Lanter plays a shy photographer who desperately tries to fit in with his friends and hold on to the decent life he seems to have. When tragedy befalls him, his unresolved past begins unraveling, threatening to destroy his work and relationships. William Russ, Hallee Hirsh, Yetide Badaki, Eric Tiede, Hakeem Kae-Kazim, Maiara Walsh, Dendrie Taylor and Cindy Pickett also star.

This big, expensive and well-produced action-suspense Sci-fi epic mostly delivers on its promise to be Aliens at the bottom of the sea. At heart it’s a 1950s pulse-pounder with a bigger monster, a zillion times the budget and a script that does everything but make us care. We appreciate the likable characters but it’s too easy to predict who will ‘get it’ next. The realism factor is not bad at all, although the undersea explorer video training sessions should have given ‘how not to crack up under stress’ more emphasis. And can’t anybody properly mind those pesky nuclear bombs?

While it may not be Friday, there is still plenty to celebrate this Tuesday the 13th, as we prepare to head back to Camp Crystal Lake with Scream Factory’s impressive Friday the 13th Collection, which brings together all the films from the original franchise, as well as the remake and Freddy vs. Jason as well. Scream Factory also put together a Blu-ray release of one of the most seminal films from my childhood this week—Terror in the Aisles—and they even are giving Motel Hell the Steelbook treatment on Tuesday as well.

Kino Lorber is also keeping busy this week with their special edition Blu for DeepStar Six as well as a SteelBook for Rawhead Rex, and for those of you who dig on The Exorcist sequels, both Dominion and Exorcist: The Beginning come home on Blu-ray this Tuesday, courtesy of Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.

Sitting down with host Josh Gad for the nostalgic episode, Matthew Broderick, Alan Ruck, Mia Sara, Jennifer Grey, Cindy Pickett, Lyman Ward and Ben Stein reminisced about the 1986 classic, marking one of the first times the cast had been together in over a decade. In the latest and final episode of Josh Gad’s web series, ‘Reunited Apart’, the cast and crew behind ‘Ferris Bueller’s Day Off’ came together for a trip down memory lane.

Matthew Broderick (Ferris) leads the returning cast, with costars Alan Ruck (Cameron), Mia Sara (Sloane), Jennifer Grey (Jeanie), Cindy Pickett (Katie), and Lyman Ward (Tom) all appearing during the stream. Kenny Ortega, who choreographed the iconic Chicago parade, also appears.

The cast reunites to reminisce about their time on the movie, ad-libbing certain scenes and giving the audience some of the films most famous line.

Even one very special guest turns up in the form of Jake Gyllenhaal giving his insight into what role he could play in a possible sequel to the 1986 film.

Matt Steele penned the script and stars as Ricky Redmond, a self-proclaimed “Broadway Legend” who is forced to share the spotlight with the school’s star athlete (Brundidge) in the high school musical. I normally equate seaside towns with peace and tranquility, a place for rest, relaxation, and perhaps writing the Great Canadian Novel (it’s going to be a thinly veiled takedown of beloved children’s TV host Mr. Dressup, for the record). Clark’s Harbor however, the setting of Cry for the Strangers (1982), is a place where my laptop and I shall never set foot; there’s just too much damn tribalistic murder.

Originally broadcast by CBS on February 11th, Cry for the Strangers would have to contend with Barney Miller, Taxi, and 20/20 on ABC and Different Strokes, Gimme a Break! and Hill Street Blues on NBC, and it’s safe to say most eyes were peeping these network staples. But for those with a salty taste for the macabre, the Eye was the network to be. (For this occasion anyway; they can’t all be ABC Movie of the Week’s.

Between his high profile marriages to Brigitte Bardot and Jane Fonda, director Roger Vadim engaged in a notable liaison with Catherine Deneuve, just prior to her ascension to international stardom in 1964’s The Umbrellas of Cherbourg. A distress signal from deep space. A blue-collar crew of astronauts discover a derelict space craft. A star beast of unknown origin chases them through dark pipe-lined corridors until there's only a few (if one) left. After the blockbuster success of Ridley Scott's sci-fi tinged haunted house movie "Alien" busted some blocks in 1979, it was only a matter of time before the low-budget copycats followed suit.

Not only were many of these knockoff movies kinda cool, but they turned out to be a proving ground of ideas and talent for future entries in the "Alien" franchise, including "Aliens," "Alien 3" and "Prometheus" … for realsimo. The first "Alien" was in itself a shameless "homage" to classic B-movies "Planet of the Vampires" and "It! The Terror from Beyond Space," so it's only fair that flicks like this week's Vin Diesel monster mash "Riddick" should take a page or seven from its playbook.

On April 14, the University of Houston (Uh) School of Theatre & Dance celebrated the career of professor Cecil J. Pickett through the eyes of his talented and well-known students Brett Cullen, Cindy Pickett, Dennis Quaid and Robert Wuhl.

The event "An Afternoon with the Artists," moderated by Houston PBS's Ernie Manouse, was a question-and-answer session that highlighted their time at Uh and how their mentor, Cecil Pickett, influenced their lives and careers. The event benefitted the Cecil J. Pickett Scholarship Endowment Fund for students attending and aspiring to attend the School of Theatre & Dance.

Cecil J. Pickett was born in Ryan, Oklahoma and taught acting and directing at the University of Houston from 1970 to 1988. "Cecil's life was focused on training young artists for the profession. According to legend, Hughes wrote the script for his 1986 cult classic, “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” in only seven days while under the threat of a writer’s strike. He was gifted at churning out films, but his prolific nature caused him to noticeably repeat himself.

Like “Home Alone,” the box office monster that ultimately tarnished Hughes’s career, “Bueller” is an infectiously silly exercise in wish fulfillment. It lacks much of the insight that fueled his influential portraits of adolescent hell (such as his lovely debut, “Sixteen Candles”), opting for a cartoonish battle of wits between a smart-aleck student, Ferris (Matthew Broderick), and his vengeful principal (Jeffrey Jones). This past weekend at the Hilton Universal City, hundreds of stars gathered to meet and greet fans, and reunite with old friends at the HollywoodXpo. For Trekkies the highlight of the event was the Star Trek: Of Gods and Men Internet series cast reunion. Personally, we preferred a few other star spottings—The Brady Bunch's Susan Olsen, Bewitched's Erin Murphy, Happy Days' Erin Moran, and Lost in Space's June Lockhart and Mark Goddard.

We asked some of the celebrities why they come to these kinds of events. Replies ranged from selfless charitable giving to a deep respect for their fans to a simple need to earn some cash.
