Larry grew up in the west Texas town of Midland. During his high school years, he transferred out of Speech class and became involved with acting. He also performed at the local community theater. After graduating from high school, he received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of North Texas (UNT). He went on to receive a Master of Fine Arts at New York University in 1968.
