“We deeply respect and value the work of poster artists,” Hammer Films tells us in the wake of its seemingly AI-generated artwork for the forthcoming horror, Ithaqua.
Earlier this week (12th February) we brought you the welcome news that the British production company Hammer Films is currently working on a new monster movie called Ithaqua. The less cheery part of the story, however, was that the poster released as part of that announcement appeared to have been generated using AI.
As we wrote at the time, we contacted Hammer Films to ask for its response over the issue, and we’ve since received an official response.
Although the statement doesn’t mention the term ‘AI’ anywhere in it, it describes the poster as a “placeholder” and adds that “we plan to incorporate the visuals from filming into our human created official “Hammer presents” film poster art, which will soon be released to replace this placeholder.

Good news: Hammer Films is making a new monster movie: Ithaqua. Not-so-good news: it appears to have used AI to generate the poster.
Hammer Films, arguably the biggest name in British genre filmmaking, is busy making a new horror feature – its first since 2023’s Doctor Jekyll. Called Ithaqua, it’s a period piece with a solid cast including Luke Hemsworth and Kevin Durand.
Shooting is currently underway in Canada, with the iconic studio releasing a number of behind-the-scenes images from the production on its Instagram feed.
Rather disappointingly, however, a separate post includes a teaser poster which bears all the hallmarks of being generated using a piece of AI software like Midjourney. We’ve contacted Hammer Films to find out whether or not it is indeed AI-generated and will update this post if and when we get a response.

Hammer Films is making a big comeback, and this time, they’re bringing a brand-new monster to the horror world. Under the leadership of British theater producer John Gore, the legendary studio is set to launch a fresh slate of films while honoring its rich horror legacy.
For the first time in 60 years, Hammer is introducing a new movie monster with Ithaqua, a horror film directed and produced by Casey Walker. Set in the harsh, frozen wilderness of 1800s Canada, the story follows a group of survivors at a remote fur-trading outpost. The industry is in decline, food is scarce, and a mercenary is forced to unite the struggling group against the deadly cold, starvation… and something even worse.
A dark presence lurks in the shadows, watching, waiting. Those who fall under its influence are cursed with an uncontrollable hunger for flesh.

The legendary brand Hammer Films is plotting a return with a brand new slate of movies under the ownership of British theater producer John Gore, the new team aiming to “celebrate and preserve the unmatched legacy of Hammer and to usher in a new era of storytelling.” For the first time in 60 years, on that note, Hammer is unleashing a brand new movie monster!
The brand announced on Instagram over the weekend that director and producer Casey Walker will soon unleash Ithaqua, which is set in the brutal wilderness of 1800s Canada.
Hammer Films previews, “the fur trade is in decline and a remote outpost is starving. A mercenary fights to unite the survivors against the cold, the hunger… and something far worse.

Story of a former champ looking for redemption is shot through with cliches but it’s very well acted, particularly one indelible scene with Joe Pesci
Jack Huston’s directing debut is a big-hearted, decently intended piece of work; it is well acted, less well written, an old-fashioned boxing movie, classically attired in monochrome, and set in New York in 1989 but behaving as if VJ Day hasn’t happened yet. The title is an apparent nod to the one Stanley Kubrick chose for his own debut, a documentary short about a boxer’s jittery, aimless mood before that evening’s fight with nothing to do but wait.
There are a lot of cliches on show here, with some exasperatingly on-the-nose dialogue scenes, and important dramatic moments being revealed by rote in memory flashbacks. This is damaged middleweight ex-champ Mikey Flannigan, played by Michael Pitt, troubled by his terrible sins, preparing...

Deadline’s Read the Screenplay series spotlighting the scripts behind the buzziest awards-season films continues with Day of the Fight, the indie drama written and directed by Jack Huston.
Michael C. Pitt, Nicolette Robinson, John Magaro, Steve Buscemi, Ron Perlman and Joe Pesci star in the pic, shot in black and white, which had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival in its Horizons sidebar. It was released by Falling Forward Films first in Los Angeles and New York and then wider beginning December 6.
Huston’s feature directing and writing debut centers on Mikey (Pitt), a once celebrated boxer who is gearing up to get back in the ring for the first time since leaving prison. Set across the day ahead of the fight that night at Madison Square Garden, Mikey journeys through the streets of Brooklyn, reconnecting with those he loves the most as he attempts to write the wrongs of his past.

Boxing movies stand apart from other sports dramas for the sheer energy and underdog spirit they bring to the screen. From Rocky to Raging Bull, the legacy of movies about the sweet science has fascinated viewers for decades. In 1951, young director Stanley Kubrick directed a short documentary titled Day of the Fight, which followed middleweight boxer Walter Cartier as he prepared for a match-up at Madison Square Garden in New York. Actor Jack Huston was fascinated by that film and wrote a film using the same title but chronicling a much different lead-up to a prize fight.
Day of the Fight follows Mike Flannigan (Michael Pitt), a former champion boxer who spent years in prison after an accident claimed the life of a child. Given a chance to redeem himself in the ring, Irish Mike travels around New York City to make amends with people from his past while also...

“Irish” Mike Flannigan, a once-revered champion, awakens to the spectre of his past in the low light of a New York dawn. The day unfolds like a fragile tapestry, laced with hope and regret as he prepares for a return fight at Madison Square Garden.
This site looms large in his psyche, serving as a stage for redemption and a potential graveyard for aspirations. Each moment is imbued with existential weight as if the air he breathes is laden with the ghosts of his choices.
Mike takes poignant stops as he navigates the landscape of his day, recalling the echoes of his past splendour. At the gym, the rhythmic thud of fists against leather serves as a metronome for his troubled heart, while the shipyard reminds him of his hard life.

For his directorial debut, Jack Huston knew exactly how he wanted the movie to look.
“I wanted to make a film that was reminiscent of films that made me fall in love with cinema,” Huston told IndieWire. “The more gritty black-and-white dramas, human stories, adult stories, character studies, pieces.”
That meant that Huston imagined “Day of the Fight” in black and white from the start. The choice, as Huston pointed out, brought a sense of timelessness to the story of Mikey (Michael Pitt), a prizefighter freshly out of prison who spends the day before his last fight reconnecting with his past in 1989 New York City. “I think [black-and-white] gives it a sort of timeless aspect,” Huston said. “I wanted people to be able to access this film at any point. But the black and white was really a tool because I felt it was a metaphor for how he was living...

Jack Huston makes his debut as a feature film writer/director in Day of the Fight, a new indie boxing drama starring Boardwalk Empire's Michael C. Pitt as Irish Mike, a disgraced fighter making his big comeback. Throughout the day of the fight, Irish Mike contacts various important people who are important to him, if not to reconnect, then at least to make peace before he takes on the fight of his life. The ensemble cast includes Nicolette Robinson, John Magaro, Steve Buscemi, and Joe Pesci.
Day of the Fight also co-stars Ron Perlman as Stevie, Mike's boxing trainer and de facto father figure. Perlman is best known for his transformational performance as the title character in Guillermo Del Toro's Hellboy movies, as well as the tough-as-nails biker patriarch in FX's hit show, Sons of Anarchy. Plot: A washed-up boxer (Michael Pitt) prepares for the biggest match of his career – his first in ten years – while trying to patch up the various frayed relationships in his life.
Review: Day of the Fight marks actor Michael Pitt’s (billed here as Michael C. Pitt) first leading role in many years. A former heartthrob best known for The Dreamers, the American remake of Funny Games, and his role on Boardwalk Empire, he recently turned up in the underrated Benicio del Toro film Reptile but otherwise has been out of the spotlight for years. If you google his name, you can see that he had to deal with some personal issues we’re not going to dredge up here, but suffice it to say that Day of the Fight offers him a strong star vehicle that could help him make a comeback if the right people see it.

Erstwhile Boardwalk Empire star Jack Huston makes his debut as a feature film writer/director with Day of the Fight, a heartfelt indie drama that follows a disgraced boxer, Irish Mike (Michael C. Pitt), on the day of his big comeback bout at Madison Square Garden. Shot in New York City in glorious black and white, Day of the Fight succeeds thanks to its tight script, which slowly peels back the layers surrounding Irish Mike, his past, and his relationships with his friends and family, and an outstanding supporting cast, including Nicolette Robinson, Ron Perlman, Steve Buscemi, John Magaro, and Joe Pesci.
While Day of the Fight marks Jack Huston's debut as a feature film writer and director, he demonstrates an outstanding command of visual language, enhanced by his heart-wrenching script. Clearly, he was paying attention during his career as an actor.

“Raging Bull” vibes abound in actor-turned-writer/director Jack Huston’s first feature behind the camera. Huston reunites with his “Boardwalk Empire” co-star Michael C. Pitt for the 2023 out-of-competition Venice premiere “Day of the Fight.” The black-and-white drama follows a formerly renowned boxer Mike Flannigan (Pitt) now fresh out of prison and heading into his first fight since he was incarcerated.
Falling Forward Films — which this year released “Goodrich,” “Reagan,” and will soon debut “Los Frikis” — opens “Day of the Fight” in theaters on December 6. Below, IndieWire shares an exclusive clip from the film, which shows Mike asking his onetime best friend Patrick (John Magaro), now a Catholic priest, about the path toward redemption for his past. (The difference here from Martin Scorsese’s own black-and-white boxing classic being that of course Robert De Niro’s Jake Lamotta was seeking no redemption of any kind.)

Recently, I had the great pleasure of talking with the legendary Ron Perlman, who has two movies open at the moment – Absolution with Liam Neeson and Day of the Fight, co-starring Michael Pitt and Joe Pesci. While teasing his new films, Perlman, a great guy, was thrilled when I brought up the fact that, when I was in high school here in Montreal, our history teacher used to show us Quest for Fire to teach us about early man.
Made in 1981, this movie happened to be Perlman’s first, and in it he plays Amoukar, one of a tribe of cavemen sent to find fire, as they do not have the knowledge needed to create fire themselves. Shot entirely without conventional dialogue, Quest for Fire is an amazing movie that’s ripe for rediscovery, and Perlman was happy to give us a little insight in to the making of the film.

Like its title promises, Day of the Fight climaxes in a boxing match. Star Michael C. Pitt revealed that it was his idea to have a real fight during the production. Writer-director Jack Huston, making his directorial debut, heartily agreed.
“I had said to Jack, ‘Put the fight at the end of the movie. They won’t worry whether or not I get hurt then. We’ll make contact. We’ll fight. We might need to do that.’ ” Pitt said during a discussion of the movie at Deadline’s Contenders Film: Los Angeles awards showcase. “On a bigger production, they have more time. They have stunts and all these things.”
Huston only had one and a half days to film the climax of the film, a fact that floored even Martin Scorsese when he introduced a screening in New York.
“You put him in the ring,” Huston said, appearing virtually on the panel.

Jack Huston is no stranger to the movie business. So when the longtime actor and grandson of filmmaker John Huston launched his directorial debut — the boxing drama “Day of the Fight” — to good reviews at last year’s Venice Film Festival, he knew it would still be tough to find distribution in today’s theatrical marketplace. But he had no idea how tough a fight it would be.
“We took on a sort of impossible feat by making a black-and-white period movie starring Michael Pitt,” Huston says of his film, which boasts supporting turns from Joe Pesci, Ron Perlman and Steve Buscemi. ”People walk out of this film so joyous, even [reps from] the biggest distributors. But some of these companies aren’t contractually allowed to take on black-and-white movies, which to me is the death of art. I put everything into this movie, so when it came to distribution, I said,...

Warrior Nun's return faces a potential setback after a financial probe of the production company working on the series' revival. Following the end of Warrior Nun season 2, the action fantasy series was cancelled by Netflix, leading to a global fan movement to revive the series. While a return was promised in 2023, it was revealed to be a revival movie trilogy produced by Dean English with the involvement of comic creator Ben Dunn. Since then, there has been very little news about its return, including formal, public information about whether the series will be a reboot or a sequel.
Now, The Hollywood Reporter has revealed the production company and film financier Productivity Media Inc. faced a financial probe that could be a setback for Warrior Nun's comeback. CEO William Santor was suspended after reports of financial mismanagement within the company. Some producers on the company's independent films have reportedly not been paid in full,...

Film finance and production company Productivity Media Inc. has suspended its CEO amid a probe over allegations of financial mismanagement, the company tells The Hollywood Reporter. It recently informed investors that its executive team had brought in auditor PricewaterhouseCoopers to check its books and review loans.
“We can confirm that there is an ongoing confidential investigation and that William Santor is currently on a temporary leave of absence,” a representative said.
Multiple sources tell THR that at least some producers on Pmi productions — independent films with budgets typically under $10 million — have not been paid their full fees and believe distribution efforts may be imperiled by the issues now under review. “It is the company’s policy not to comment on these types of alleged contractual matters in a public forum,” the Pmi representative said.

Is Jack Huston about to give Sylvester Stallone’s Rocky a run for its money? What is this blasphemy upon which I speak? I’m talking about Jack Huston’s Day of the Fight, an upcoming underdog film packing a lot of heart that Falling Forward Films recently picked up for distribution. Today’s Day of the Fight trailer introduces Jack Huston’s directorial debut and what looks like a powerhouse performance from Michael Pitt.
Today’s Day of the Fight trailer presents Huston’s black-and-white indie film about a once-renowned boxer on a redemptive journey through his past and present. The film chronicles the boxer’s arc from his first fight to his release from prison and beyond. Judges are already eyeing Day of the Fight for awards consideration. Joining Michael Pitt in the film are Nicolette Robinson, Ron Perlman, John Magaro, Anatol Yuse, and Steve Buscemi as primary cast members.

In what is shaping up to be a rather thin awards season, could a small but formidable film, written and directed by a filmmaker with three Oscar winners in his family, find its way into contention?
That’s what Falling Forward Films is betting on in acquiring the U.S. distribution rights for Jack Huston’s impressive directorial debut Day of the Fight, a black-and-white indie about a once-renowned boxer — played by Huston’s former Boardwalk Empire costar Michael C. Pitt — as he takes a redemptive journey through his past and present on the day of his first fight since he was released from prison.
Indeed, the upstart distributor has already begun mounting an awards campaign for the film, which also stars Nicolette Robinson, Ron Perlman, John Magaro, Anatol Yusef, Steve Buscemi (another Boardwalk Empire alum) and — coming out of retirement to make a brief but shattering appearance — Oscar winner Joe Pesci.

While there have certainly been some interesting contenders, there has just never been a TV show quite like NBC's "Hannibal." The series began as something of a procedural, following a special FBI team working with criminal profiling instructor Will Graham (Hugh Dancy), whose empathy allows him to truly get into the minds of the killers he hunts. When he teams up with the talented psychologist Hannibal Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen), however, things get really interesting. Over its three seasons, the show transforms from a procedural with a "murder of the week" format to something much more unconventional. Showrunner Bryan Fuller helped shape the series into a sumptuous, indulgent creation that followed a tragic romance between its two leads, spawning entire bookshelves' worth of fanfiction. It's a brilliant adaptation of author Thomas Harris' Hannibal Lecter novels, giving Lecter new depth and a surprising sensuality that was missing from other iterations.

Asphalt City (Jean-Stéphane Sauvaire)
I entered Asphalt City at last year’s EnergaCAMERIMAGE festival with nothing but morbid curiosity. Having engendered some rank responses from its Cannes premiere and not secured any known U.S. distributor, Jean-Stéphane Sauvaire’s film had the right kind of bad-object energy one needs at the jetlagged start to their week in a small Polish city. (Or just the comfort I personally get from a Brooklyn-shot feature featuring two Club Random guests.) I walked away boasting complicated, fascinated enthusiasm: nearly every second is ridiculous and never boring, and it doesn’t not deserve to play at a cinematography festival––having the most cinematography counts for something. Starting and ending with a blatant homage to The New World...

Bernardo Bertolucci’s Nc-17 masterpiece “The Dreamers” is receiving a 4K restoration re-release to celebrate its 20th anniversary. The film made history as the first Fox Searchlight Nc-17 theatrical release in 2004, with then-president Peter Rice comparing “The Dreamers” to Bertolucci’s other infamously controversial film, “Last Tango in Paris.”
Bertolucci said at the time that “The Dreamers” being released stateside in its original cut was a relief, adding, “After all, an orgasm is better than a bomb.”
“The Dreamers” premiered at the Venice Film Festival in 2003 and had its U.S. debut at Sundance 2004. Future Bond cast member Eva Green made her credited big screen debut (after a bit part in “The Piano Teacher”) with the erotic psychological drama following a trio of cinephile students in 1968 Paris during the riots. Michael Pitt and Louis Garrel co-starred alongside Green.
The newly-restored version of the feature does not yet have a U.

Restored in 4K for its 20th anniversary last year, Bernardo Bertolucci’s penultimate feature The Dreamers is now arriving on a new 4K Uhd disc this summer. Marking Eva Green’s first film role, the romantic drama set during the 1968 Paris student riots also stars Michael Pitt and Louis Garrel. While a U.S. release has not been unveiled yet, the region-free 4K Uhd set featuring the restoration completed by Fondazione Cineteca di Bologna under the supervision of director of photography, Fabio Cianchetti, will debut in the UK on May 13.
Here’s the synopsis:
The Dreamers is set in Paris, Spring of 1968: the city is beginning to emerge from hibernation and an obscure spirit of social and political renewal is in the air. Yet Théo, his twin sister Isabelle and Matthew, an American student they have befriended, think only of immersing themselves in another, addictive form of hibernation: moviegoing at the Cinémathèque Française.

Jean-Stéphane Sauvaire’s Asphalt City was originally titled Black Flies, after the Shannon Burke novel from which it’s adapted, when it premiered last year at Cannes. For a film about the difficult situations that E.M.T. workers have to deal with on New York City’s streets, Asphalt City has an appropriate directness. But it’s Black Flies that more accurately reflects the film’s lurid register. It’s a reference to an encounter that rookie E.M.T. worker Ollie Cross (Tye Sheridan) has on the job that echoes a childhood trauma, but the way the filmmakers shoot the moment, it’s as if they’re touting their belief in New York as a rotted corpse.
Regardless of what it goes by, the film reveals its agenda from the moment that Ollie walks to a crime scene in the projects and the herky-jerky camera approximates his addled consciousness. Gene...
