Much has been said about production moving away from California and even out of the country over the last few years. Many put it on rising costs and contraction related to streaming overtaking broadcast and cable, the Covid-19 pandemic, and the 2023 strikes, but one of the biggest problems is the lack of tax benefits productions in California are given, particularly in Los Angeles, the supposed entertainment hub of the world. As of now, the state caps its film tax credit program at $330 million annually. Compared to Georgia, which has no cap and spent more than $1 billion in 2024 subsidizing production, or New York, which offers $700 million in tax breaks annually, California’s financial incentives are paltry at best.

The Stay in LA campaign, a call to keep more production in the city, has hit 20,000 signatures with high-profile stars including Andy Garcia and Marisa Tomei joining the call alongside filmmakers including Jonathan Nolan and Paul Feig.
This comes after a week of awards season events where the likes of Hacks co-creator Paul W. Downs and DGA President Lesli Linka Glatter stumped for the campaign at high-profile shindigs.
As Hacks, which shoots in locations including Altadena, won best comedy series at the Critics Choice Awards, Downs said that “we need to ask to shoot our shows in LA” and the “people in the room have the power to make it happen”, while Linka Glatter, who lost her home in the wildfires, urged directors to “insist that your projects are shot where they are set”.

Rian Johnson, Patty Jenkins, Joey King, Zooey Deschanel, Joshua Jackson, Olivia Wilde, Alex Winter, Kevin Bacon, Connie Britton, Charlie Hunnam, Sian Heder and Jason Reitman are among the signatories to the grassroots campaign, which was launched by Alexandra Pechman and Sarah Adina Smith.

Back in 2009, when vampires had become a part and parcel of pop culture, thanks to the Twilight movies, The Vampire Diaries had gotten everyone in a chokehold. But it wasn’t just the hot Salvatore brothers or the juicy drama that hooked people to the screen. It was the showrunners’ genius play with music that made the show so addictive.

Packing every episode with popular bangers from The Fray to One Republic, The Vampire Diaries managed to turn the soundtrack into more than just background music—it hit people right in the feels. Fast forward to today, new shows seem to have forgotten this cheat code. No offense, but it’s time to bring that magic back.

The Vampire Diaries fandom could hardly imagine another actress in the role of Elena Gilbert. Nina Dobrev delivered a memorable performance in the role, even grasping the nuanced details when playing Elena’s different doppelgängers. However, Dobrev almost lost the role during the audition and fought tooth & nail to get her role eventually.

One of the showrunners, Julie Plec, recalled that Dobrev couldn’t deliver her best during the audition because she fell ill at that time. It was wise of Plec and Kevin Williamson to provide her a second chance since she carried the series to its fame along with Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley.

The Vampire Diaries star Ian Somerhalder would’ve had a tough time on set if the TV series were to adapt one power from its book version. L.J. Smith’s book series gave Damon the weird power to transform into a crow or a black dog. However, in the TV pilot, it was changed such that Damon could control a crow and use it to spy on people.

The idea of using a crow also turned out to be logistically challenging, forcing the makers to let go of the crow entirely after the first few episodes. Interestingly, Damon could also control the fog in these episodes, a power that was attributed to Katherine in the book series. This power too was scrapped as it was considered too supernatural.

Ian Somerhalder might have retired from acting but his portrayal of Damon Salvatore in The Vampire Diaries will forever remain iconic. From Somerhalder’s looks to how well he captured the cockiness of the elder Salvatore brother captured the hearts of millions of fangirls across the world, proving instrumental in the success of the show.

However, what remains a little-known fact is that the actor sort of tanked his audition due to his nervousness. It wasn’t until the series co-creator Kevin Williamson stepped in that he ended up getting the role.

The Vampire Diaries is based on a book series of the same name by L. J. Smith. When it comes to cross-media adaptations, it is not easy to find the perfect actor to play fictional roles with which fans are already familiar. The process becomes even more arduous when it comes to casting ‘Vampires,’ creatures who are supposed to be perfect in every way.

And this was the challenge that the production faced while developing The Vampire Diaries. While most people would normally think that Damon would have been harder to cast given his suave and charismatic demeanor, it wasn’t the case. Rather there was another character whose casting even had the production push back the schedule since they couldn’t find any actor perfect enough for the role.

In the surreal fantasy world ruled by vampires, demons, and other supernatural creatures, The Vampire Diaries made a splash big enough to be remembered even ages after being last aired. For one, Damon, Stefan, and Elena’s story appeased fans worldwide to the point where it successfully spawned 171 episodes over 8 seasons without losing its exceptional ratings.

Is anyone even watching young adult TV anymore?
As the entire television ecosystem has been upended in recent years, dedicated spaces for YA content have all but disappeared. The CW swiftly cancelled nearly all of its scripted series, many of which targeted this audience, over the last few years. Freeform has done the same.
The streamers have largely taken up the mantle on speaking to young audiences, but still questions remain. With the rise of short-form content thanks to TikTok and YouTube, does this new generation of teens and young adults even care for longform, scripted content? How can streamers compete for Gen Z’s attention in such a fractured landscape?
“I don’t think the demand is dwindling,” Greg Berlanti, who has produced some of the most culturally relevant YA content of the past two decades from Dawson’s Creek to Riverdale, told Deadline. “There will always be a place for great YA.

Fans of the supernatural genre lived and breathed TV series like The Vampire Diaries, Supernatural, and The Originals. So when the Jensen Ackles starrer premiered its finale in 2020, it broke a lot of fan’s hearts and left a gaping hole.
However, an older video featured an amazing crossover idea that could unite two of the biggest TV show fandoms. Ackles was asked for a possible crossover he would have liked for his character Dean Winchester. His answer was what almost every fan demanded, with The Vampire Diaries. If taken into consideration this concept could bring back Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder for an epic reunion.

Nina Dobrev’s flawless beauty and impeccable acting charms most certainly seem to have helped in making her one of the most iconic talents in Hollywood’s entertainment industry. And yet, it can’t be denied that it was her performance as the lead female protagonist Elena Gilbert in the all-time fan-favorite The Vampire Diaries that had fans absolutely smitten with her.

The Vampire Diaries' series finale isn't as disappointing as the original ending that the creators of the show had planned. Based on the books by L.J. Smith of the same name, The Vampire Diaries follows Damon and Stefan Salvatore, two brothers who are in love with the same girl. With The Vampire Diaries cast led by Ian Somerhalder, Paul Wesley, and Nina Dobrev, the show has become one of the most popular fantasy shows of its era, and has produced two spinoffs, The Originals and Legacies.
The Vampire Diaries has eight seasons, most of which were focused on which Salvatore brother Elena would end up with. Given that The Vampire Diaries made several changes to the book, it's not surprising that the show's creators had an alternate ending in mind. But while not everyone was satisfied with how the series ended, the original ending wouldn't have been any better.

Fantasy TV shows are a beloved part of the TV show landscape, but there are many viewers who have never seen a series in the genre. This makes sense, as fantasy and other works of speculative fiction can be daunting to get into when there isn't a clear place to start. The heavy lore and world-building that fantasy is known for can dissuade casual viewers who want escapism rather than active watching. However, some of the best works within the genre are perfect for audiences looking to dip their toe into fantasy and find the stories that click with them.
Some of the more approachable shows within the genre are the best historical fantasy TV shows. Using the past as a foreign world instead of a new realm with different laws of physics and government is an easier transition into fantasy. Romance is also a key facet of many works...

On 10 September 2009, we all walked into Mystic Falls and simply never left. We fell in love with everything The Vampire Diaries had to offer – heart-stealing bromances, selfless heroes, unforgettable couples in love, and even the villains. Everything was simply perfect. And then one day, it all came to an end. We said goodbye to our favorite vampires, witches, werewolves, and hybrids in 2017 but hey, what goodbye has actually lasted? Call us Tvd fans sappy but we keep going back to the series time and again to witness it all again as if we are seeing it for the first time.

For 13 years, Julie Plec oversaw some version of The Vampire Diaries on The CW. First there was the original show, which ran for eight seasons of supernatural mayhem. The Originals, which brought vampire-werewolf hybrids into the mix, ran for five. Legacies featured characters from both series and ran for four seasons, ending in 2022. That's also when The CW was sold to Nexstar Media Group, which got rid of basically all of the network's original programming and has left it a shell of its former self. Apparently the Vampire Diaries universe had the support of CW CEO Mark Pedowitz, but a new owner's going to do what they're going to do.
“I was not entirely pleased with that decision,” Plec told Deadline about the cancelation. “There had been a Vampire Diaries show on the air for 13 years, and it seemed unfathomable to me that the studio wouldn’t want to keep...

In the realm of the supernatural genre, The Vampire Diaries occupies a very special separate space for being an incredibly intriguing and fascinating series about blood-sucking fictional beings known as Vampires. Having won several awards and fashioned off several spin-offs, the series remain as beloved as ever despite its end in 2017.

What made the tale even more interesting was that the series took creative liberty to expand upon the concepts of ‘Originals’ aka the first-ever Vampires, in turn leading to an equally successful series, The Originals. The concept turned out to be instrumental to the success of The Vampire Diaries, yet Ian Somerhalder has a good reason to be bitter about the show.

Imagine The Vampire Diaries without Ian Somerhalder as Damon Salvatore. There, there. Hope you didn’t choke. But boy, it almost happened! In some wild alternate universe, the brooding vampire could’ve been played by none other than a Marvel star. Yep, before Somerhalder won fans over with his smirks and dangerous charm, the showrunners were eyeing a completely different actor—one who’s since made waves in the superhero world.

But as fate would have it, and thank God it did, that other guy just didn’t hit the mark, leaving the door wide open for Somerhalder to swoop in and claim the role of a lifetime. It’s crazy to think that one casting decision could’ve flipped The Vampire Diaries upside down!

Fifteen years ago, Julie Plec and Kevin Williamson thought that, on the heels of True Blood and Twilight, vampires were becoming a bit overrated.
Luckily, they didn’t listen to that instinct when they forged ahead with an adaptation of L. J. Smith’s fantasy horror novel, The Vampire Diaries, for The CW.
The pilot aired on Sept. 10, 2009, and, not only was it a resounding success, putting up what at the time was the largest premiere audience since the network debuted three years earlier, it also spawned an entire franchise that would last more than a decade. The Vampire Diaries would also influence pop culture and the entire young adult genre in unpredictable ways — so much so that it’s still worth talking about seven years after the final episode.

Blame it on Ian Somerhalder’s smoldering charisma and dangerously alluring bad-boy persona, that fans wanted more of him to appear onscreen. But who knew audiences’ thirst for the sizzling hot Damon Salvatore would ruin showrunner Julie Plec’s original plan for The Vampire Diaries?

Well, apparently fans’ daddy issues towards Ian Somerhalder seemingly derailed the entire plot for The Vampire Diaries. According to Julie Plec, the original plan was to keep Damon and Elena apart. However, as Somerhalder’s Damon turned up the heat, fans went wild for a love story that the writers never intended to ignite. What followed was a deliciously tangled web of fan obsession and creative maneuvering.

The Vampire Diaries movie gets an intriguing update from Julie Plec, the co-creator of the supernatural teen drama. Based on L. J. Smiths novel of the same name, the supernatural series premiered on The CW in 2009. It became one of the most successful long-running series on TV, producing offshoots like comic books and novels and several spinoff shows which have also found moderate success. The Vampire Diaries concluded in 2017, but the co-creator has since teased a potential movie for some time.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Plec spoke about a Vampire Diaries movie that could bring back the original cast and revisit parts of the original story. She explained that producing a movie right now will pose a tough challenge, seeing as many characters died in the show. However, she believes it will be a fun challenge regardless. The Vampire Diaries co-creator Julie Plec reflects on casting the show's three most crucial roles, fifteen years after the show's premiere. One of the most popular teen dramas in recent history, the L.J. Smith adaptation helped launch and reinvigorate the careers of its lead actors Nina Dobrev, Paul Wesley, and Ian Somerhalder. With their respective performances as Elena Gilbert and the Salvatore brothers, Stefan and Damon, the trio anchored The CW series for most of its run. But with a few changes to The Vampire Diaries' cast could have gone very differently.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, to mark the 15th anniversary of the show's premiere, as it debuted in September 2009, Plec reflected on the drama's legacy and went into detail about the many twists and turns that led to casting Dobrev, Somerhalder, and Wesley. It’s been 15 years since audiences were introduced to Mystic Falls and its vampires, love triangles and teenage drama. And still, The Vampire Diaries holds a special place for many viewers.
Vampire Diaries premiered on The CW on Sept. 10, 2009, and ran for eight seasons,. Now, to celebrate the milestone anniversary, showrunner Julie Plec looks back on the series she created with Kevin Williamson and how it launched a supernatural franchise.
She recalls wanting to “tell a really emotional story that was sexy and romantic and scary and all the things,” while also creating “something that felt timeless, that could live on and continue to feel like anybody, any generation at any time can connect to it.”

And to accomplish that, Plec and Williamson knew they had to build a solid team that could produce stories with “creative integrity and that we’re deeply emotional and highly entertaining.”

The Vampire Diaries spinoff Legacies was canceled after season 4 and since then, quite a bit has come out about the Legacies season 5 canceled story plans. The second Tvd spinoff after The Originals, Legacies was decidedly different in tone and focus. Instead of focusing on adults playing teenagersor just adultsLegacies' cast skewed decidedly younger. The tone was much lighter and campier, with the story revolving around the students of the Salvatore School facing down a multitude of foes in a monster-of-the-week style setup.
Ratings for Legacies continued to drop, however, and in the middle of the Warner Bros.-Discovery merger, the decision was made to cancel it following season 4. Still, that doesn't mean that there weren't already plans for Legacies season 5. Since the show's cancelation, the Tvd universe creator, Julie Plec, and multiple Legacies writers have revealed there were indeed concrete ideas for a Legacies season 5 story arc. The plans...

The Vampire Diaries discussions often revolve around the merits of each pairing. Stefan Salvatore and Caroline Forbes Steroline of The Vampire Diaries cast have garnered significant attention and debate among fans. While their eventual romantic relationship has been a subject of controversy, hints at their connection were laid early in the series.
I particularly enjoy a pivotal episode from season 2, "Bad Moon Rising", which showcases the developing chemistry between Stefan and Caroline. I may not necessarily favor the pairing, but theres no denying that their interactions foreshadow their future relationship and highlight the strengths of their dynamic. However, one harsh reality of watching The Vampire Diaries' early seasons is that the showrunners are testing a lot of things out on audiences, leading to continuity issues later.

Character arcs in TV shows can switch from terrifying to sweet quickly. The best TV character arcs showcase organic and multi-faceted development. Some characters like Negan Smith and Din Djarin undergo complex redemption arcs.
TV shows go on for a long time, meaning that the showrunners have all the screen time they need to show a character switch from being completely terrifying to sweet and cuddly. Yet some of these switches happen very fast, even within the first episode, when the point of a character is that they maintain a facade of terror but have a heart after all. This works better in some cases than others for instance, The Walking Dead really wants everyone to forget Negan's villainy, spending years on this arc and ignoring a lot of his past.
The scary-to-sweet character type overlaps with both TV characters with the best redemption arcs and the most undeserved redemption arcs in TV shows.

Julie Plec, co-creator of the hit supernatural drama “The Vampire Diaries,” has hinted at the possibility of a new series in the franchise. During a promotional event for her new Max series “The Girls on The Bus,” Plec shared her enthusiasm for expanding the “Vampire Diaries” universe.
“I have a story I still want to tell,” Plec told Screen Rant. “I know that the people who are on the book have a story that they still want to tell. I’m sure Warner Bros. has plenty of stories they want to tell. So, the hope is they’ll give me the opportunity to do it again. We’ll see.”

Warning: This list contains spoilers for all seasons of The Vampire Diaries.
Kevin Williamson's early exit led to The Vampire Diaries losing its co-creator, worrying viewers. Alaric's transformation into a villain and Enhanced Original was unnecessary and repetitive. Sire bonds and questionable choices in relationships led to controversial storylines.
Despite its objectively successful eight-season run, The Vampire Diaries doubtlessly lost some viewers over the years due to specific unpopular moments and storylines. Following the trials of human Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev) after she encounters the vampire brother Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder), the concept of The Vampire Diaries means that it is easily overwhelmed by convoluted supernatural elements at some points. Vampires, werewolves, and witches are standard but some other supernatural beings were not as well received.
Additionally, The Vampire Diaries is driven by romantic drama and is marketed that way. However, even the most...

Even executives at Max seemed sad to end “The Girls on the Bus” after its first and only season on the streaming platform.
“While Max will not be moving forward with a second season of ‘The Girls on the Bus,’ we are grateful to have partnered with immensely talented Amy Chozick, Julie Plec, Rina Mimoun, as well as the teams at Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. Television,” a representative for Max said in a statement last month. “We are so proud of this powerful story of found family and the celebration of journalism, in all its forms. We thank them and our unrivaled cast for all their incredible work and collaboration.”
The show’s lead and producer, Melissa Benoist, also felt that sense of satisfaction over what was accomplished with the 10-episode drama series.

Emily Alyn Lind, Shubham Maheshwari, Joseph Zada and Esther McGregor have joined the cast of Prime Video’s new drama series “We Were Liars,” based on the young adult novel of the same name by E. Lockhart.
They join previously announced cast members Mamie Gummer, Caitlin FitzGerald, Candice King, David Morse, and Asher Ali.
Lind joins the cast as Cadence, “the revered eldest granddaughter of a Kennedy-esque American dynasty, effortlessly clever and adventurous [with] a knack for dramatic storytelling,” per the official character description. Maheshwari will take on the role of Gat, a “thoughtful, ambitious and intelligent New York City kid with an edge — so he can’t help but feel a bit out of place amongst Martha’s Vineyard’s cashmere-and-gingham elite.” McGregor will play Mirren, a “wickedly funny and keenly observant…artist who is too worried about being perfect to color outside the lines.” Zada has been cast as Johnny,...

Warning: Spoilers for The Girls on the Bus season 1, episode 10, "The Everydays."
The Girls on the Bus has been cancelled after one season on Max. Most storylines were resolved in the final episode, giving the main characters positive outcomes, but a major lingering thread remains. The show's creators had a three-season plan that won't be realized.
Max has cancelled The Girls on the Bus after one season, bringing an end to the political dramedy despite its cliffhanger finale. Debuting in March, from co-creators Julie Plec and Amy Chozik, the ten-episode show is inspired by Choziks experience as a political reporter. The story unfolds on the campaign trail, particularly focusing on four journalists, each with their unique reporting styles and personalities. This includes the idealistic Sadie McCarthy (Supergirl star Melissa Benoist), who is hoping to bounce back after a personal setback in the previous election cycle.
