‘Good Night, And Good Luck’ Review: George Clooney Makes Broadway Debut Battling Alternative Facts Through The Decades
Image
There are moments in Good Night, and Good Luck, the new play by George Clooney and Grant Heslov opening on Broadway tonight at the Winter Garden Theatre and starring Clooney as pioneering TV journalist Edward R. Murrow, when the anti-authoritarian passions of all three men are made very clear. Anti-McCarthyism in Murrow’s case, anti-Trumpism for Clooney and, one presumes, Heslow. Unfortunately, more often than not, that clarity comes through speechifying, minor-key tirades and copious use of ’50s-era TV clips that make plain the all-too-obvious parallels between then and now.

We know when, in history and in the play, the inevitable “Have you no sense of decency?” will arrive to put Senator Joseph McCarthy out of America’s misery. When, the play not so subtly wonders, will Donald Trump face the same path?

Making clear-as-day the similarities between those long ago days of McCarthyite propaganda and today’s Trumpian “alternative facts,...

Matt Murdock Is Marvel's Most Morally Ambiguous Hero After Daredevil: Born Again Episode 3
Image
This article contains spoilers for "Daredevil: Born Again" season 1, episode 3.

Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) has always been a complex guy, as befits a devil who's playing for the side of the angels. The character's first headliner gig in the Marvel Cinematic Universe continues to lean heavily into this characterization, depicting his charm, smarts, guilt, and determination with equal gusto. However, when Matt deals with the Hector Ayala murder case with the best intentions at heart, one particular call he makes ends up becoming one of the most stellar MCU examples of sheer moral ambiguity.

In the second episode of "Daredevil: Born Again" (read our review), Hector attempts to stop two men roughing up someone and the ensuing fracas causes one to stumble in front of an oncoming train. Matt chances upon the case when his super-senses notice the arrested Hector's peril. The lawyer is quick to realize that the man is not only innocent,...

Meghan McCain Says ‘The Ghost Of John McCain’ Stage Musical Was Not Authorized By Late Senator’s Family – Update
Image
Update with Meghan McCain statement: Meghan McCain says her family has not authorized a new, planned musical inspired by – and named after – her late father.

But considering that the in-development musical features fictionalized characters based on public figures, John McCain included, it’s unlikely producers need any such authorization. Deadline has reached out to a show spokesperson for comment.

In an exclusive statement to The Messenger, McCain said, “My family has not authorized it nor was aware of it. I was as surprised as everyone else to see the announcement.”

This morning, producers Quixote Productions and Max Fose announced an invitation-only industry reading later this week in New York of what they call a “provocative and zeitgeisty” new musical titled The Ghost of John McCain. The musical features a book by Scott Elmegreen and score by Drew Fornarola.

In their announcement, the producers describe the musical as “a unique psychological exploration of power,...

"This is our spot, it's our little corner of the world, and I'm not giving it up." Samuel Goldwyn Films has revealed an official trailer for an indie romantic comedy titled Space Oddity, which I don't really think is good enough to borrow this iconic title from David Bowie's song. Oh well. The film first premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival last year and will be out at the end of March this year. A space-obsessed man gets the opportunity of a lifetime thanks to a Mars colonization program but finds his plans changed by his feelings for a woman who brings him down to Earth. In the midst of his rigorous preparation, he meets Daisy, the new girl in town who's trying to start over. Eventually Alex finds himself questioning whether it's easier to confront his past or fly away into the stars. Kyle Allen stars as Alex,...

Armageddon Time (2022) – Movie Review: A Tactfully Told Drama
Image
Armageddon Time is a movie written and directed by James Gray, starring Michael Banks Repeta, Anne Hathaway, Jeremy Strong and Anthony Hopkins.

A well presented story, perfectly coordinated, balanced and magnificently interpreted. So tender yet bitter, which Gray has rendered onto film with the perfectly measured amount of drama.

Premise

Set in Queens, New York in the early 1980’s, it tells the story of Paul, a boy with a Jewish background who befriends his rebellious classmate Johnny, a Black American. Their friendship is not welcome by Paul’s family, and he has to face the truth of inequality and prejudice.

Armageddon Time (2022) Movie Review

A wonderfully sober feature for film critics, yet rather slow and melancholy for the audience at large. So, we should probably side with both, thinking that it is not James Gray’s pretension to make a movie that will become a mass phenomenon with this number,...

Christopher Spelman (‘Armageddon Time’ composer) on crafting music to ‘reflect the delicacy of a child’s emotional world’ [Exclusive Video Interview]
Image
“I remember 1980 as a time when New York could be a scary place,” recollects composer Christopher Spelman. The musician wrote the score of James Gray’s new film “Armageddon Time,” which takes place in Queens, NY, in 1980 and chronicles the friendship between two sixth-graders during a transitional moment in United States history. He remembers the city at that time as a “really amazing, fascinating place where I was super happy to be, but a place where you could run into chaos pretty much anywhere.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

Spelman has frequently collaborated with Gray, having previously scored “The Immigrant” and “The Lost City of Z” and consulted on other films by the director. The musician shares that he loves the “open conversation” that they share, noting how the filmmaker never “hesitates to tell me what he really thinks.” He also describes the writer-director as “extremely funny… the funniest...

Andrew Polk (‘Armageddon Time’) talks the inspiration and ‘creative leaps’ he took to bring James Gray’s public school teacher to life [Exclusive Video Interview]
Image
For actor Andrew Polk, finding inspiration for his role as middle-school teacher Mr. Turkeltaub in James Gray’s “Armageddon Time” came fairly easily. Set in 1980 in Queens, New York, the film tackles the integration of public schools through the friendship of sixth-graders Paul Graff (Banks Repeta) and Johnny Davis (Jaylin Webb). Raised in Berkeley, California, the actor remembers the “first stab at integration” in his own community, an experience he sees as a “mirror” to the events of the movie. As a parent, he also felt he could tap into the “frustration” of a teacher having to handle 42 students by himself. Watch our exclusive video interview above.

By happenstance, Polk had the opportunity to learn about the real Mr. Turkeltaub through his “dear friend” and fellow performer Amy Ryan, who attended Ps 173 in Queens and actually had the teacher in fifth grade. “She sent me a picture of her in...

Armageddon Time Review: Gray’s Latest is Uninspiring & Noncommittal [Sdiff]
Image
There’s something to be said about James Gray’s ability to infuse emotion into his features with little to no effort. In the acclaimed Ad Astra, he intertwines an intergalactic journey with passion, style, and a deep connectivity to humanity when all sentimentality feels lost. Hoping to seep these latter concepts into his next project, Gray turns to his own childhood to reflect on prejudice, privilege, and the eye-opening dangers of silence and complacency. But where Ad Astra succeeded, his latest fails, as it takes on too much without acknowledging the nuances of such complicated topics. Armageddon Time excels at capturing naiveté but under-commits to sharing the truths of racial disparity when it comes to the American dream.

In 1980, the Graff family settles into another year of celebrations, changes, and the challenges of life in their Queens, New York home. The youngest of the family, Paul Graff (Michael Banks Repeta...

Anne Hathaway and ‘Armageddon Time’ Cast on How James Gray’s Film Captures Post-Segregation Racism and the American Dream
Image
James Gray’s “Armageddon Time” explores the complexity of the American Dream — the idea that every citizen should have an equal opportunity to achieve success through hard work and initiative — from the perspective of a Jewish family in 1980.

“In some ways,” according to star Anne Hathaway, the status of this idealistic pursuit has remained “very similar” over the years. At the same time, the actor pinpointed a notable societal change that she hopes continues to persist.

“If there’s one thing that I really do hope that we keep coming to a different place about because it keeps coming up at such an impossibly high cost, is that we’re more willing to see ourselves as a part of the problem,” Hathaway told Variety on Wednesday night at the “Armaggedon Time” New York Film Festival premiere. “Not in a fragile way, but in a way that we can affect change by changing ourselves.

Anne Hathaway, ‘Armageddon Time’ Team on Exploring Injustice: “Sometimes You Have to Look Backwards to Look Forwards”

It was a (fictional) family affair in New York City on Wednesday to celebrate Armageddon Time at the New York Film Festival.

Anne Hathaway, Jeremy Strong, Jaylin Webb, Banks Repeta, Andrew Polk and more of the cast and crew of the film made their way to Alice Tully Hall to celebrate the New York premiere of their upcoming film, based on a true story from writer-director James Gray.

The film is set in 1980s Queens against the backdrop of a country going through an ominous sociopolitical change. It follows Jewish-American student Paul Graff (Repeta) and his friend Johnny (Webb), who is targeted by their racist teacher (Polk), as Paul finds himself at odds with his parents (Strong and Hathaway).

“I’m glad that we’re telling the story at this time because I think that in the past few years so many of...

‘Space Oddity’ Review: Kyra Sedgwick’s Directorial Debut Is a Spaceless, Sexless Rom-Com
Image
From a young age, we’re told to show, not tell. Or show and tell, a concept that the second graders in “Space Oddity,” Kyra Sedgwick’s directorial debut, seem to grasp very well onscreen, unlike the script of this film.

“Space Oddity” stars Kyle Allen (“West Side Story”) as Alexander McAllister, a man preparing to leave Earth on Mission Mars, an esteemed space-age venture led by a wealthy private company.

No, not Elon Musk’s SpaceX program or Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic, both name-dropped in the film. Instead, Mission Mars is a vague concept that may or may not be a scam, and soon “Space Oddity” seems to hint that Alex is living in a “Truman Show”-esque delusional construct built from the trauma of surviving a car accident that killed his older brother, Tom. This isn’t helped by Alex’s Skype friendship with disgruntled suburban dad...

14 Movies We’re Excited to See at This Year’s Tribeca Festival
Image
Tribeca is back and looking almost like it did before Covid hit the scene and upended film festivals around the world.

The 2022 edition will have indoor screenings, something that last year’s all-outdoor version eschewed. It will also offer up a steady stream of splashy premieres, performances, concerts and talks featuring A-listers such as Jennifer Lopez, as well as new offerings from the likes of Jon Hamm, Jessica Chastain, Ray Romano, Bryan Cranston and more. That’s the kind of sizzle that New York City could use as it tries to regain its stride after coronavirus knocked it for a loop.

But some pandemic-era innovations remain. Film lovers who still prefer to avoid crowds during Covid can access many of the movies and events digitally with the Tribeca At Home platform, a sign that going forward festivals are going to continue embracing a hybrid model.

As Tribeca kicks off its 12-day run on Wednesday,...

‘Armageddon Time’ Review: James Gray’s Deft 1980 Coming-of-Age Memoir Is an Old-School Liberal Message Movie in Progressive Drag
Image
When I watch a movie by the writer-director James Gray, I often have the sensation that I’m seeing two films in one: the story being told and the one hovering offscreen — the one that’s all about his aspiration to be something larger than a mere storyteller. Early Gray films like “The Yards” (2000) and “We Own the Night” (2007) were modest tales suffused with his desire to be making “a ’70s movie.” “Ad Astra” (2019) was a lavishly scaled outer-space thriller suffused with his desire to be making “2001: A Space Odyssey.”

“Armageddon Time,” Gray’s eighth feature, marks a break from most of what he has done before. It’s a more personal project — an autobiographical coming-of-age memoir movie, set in Queens, New York, in 1980 and featuring an 11-year-old hero, Paul Graf (Banks Repeta), who navigates the sixth grade and the wider world that starts to feed into it. It’s a skillful,...

Alejandro Monteverde Sets Christiana Dell’Anna, John Lithgow, David Morse & More To Star In Francesca Cabrini Biopic
Image
Exclusive: Christiana Dell’Anna (Gomorrah), John Lithgow (The Crown), David Morse (The Green Mile), Rolando Villazón (La Bohèmme) and more will star in an Untitled Cabrini Film from Alejandro Monteverde.

The film tells the story of Francesca Cabrini, one of the greatest entrepreneurs of the 19th Century, who began with nothing and created the largest multinational charitable empire the world had ever known, her accomplishments equaling those of Vanderbilt and Rockefeller. While Cabrini was faced in her time with the sexism and virulent anti-Italian bigotry of 19th century America, she overcame every obstacle through relentless perseverance and business skill, eventually building schools, orphanages and hospitals that transformed the lives of immigrants worldwide.

The Untitled Cabrini Film also stars Montserrat Espadalé, Romana Maggiora Vergano, Patch Darragh, Jeremy Bobb, Virginia Bocelli, Andrew Polk, and Giampiero Judica.

The Francesca Films pic’s producers include Academy Award and BAFTA Award winner Jonathan Sanger and Leo Severino. Rod Barr wrote the script; he collaborated on the story with TIFF’s People’s Choice Award winner Monteverde.

The film is currently in production in New York; the shoot will wrap up in Rome this fall. The project was the brainchild of financier Eustace Wolfington, whose passion for the story of Francesca Cabrini began over 60 years ago.

“The minute I learned of Cabrini’s life story, I realized this was a story that deserved to be brought to the big screen,” said Wolfington. “As a pioneer of human rights long before today, her story will be an inspiration to today’s pioneers of human rights which makes her story and unprecedented accomplishments as relevant today as ever.”

“As an immigrant myself, I am honored to be able to shine a light on the astonishing story of a true warrior of social justice who transformed the lives of immigrants worldwide,” said Monteverde. “Cabrini was a pioneer of women’s empowerment, making her story as relevant today as in the 1890’s. This picture – like Cabrini herself – is surprising, courageous, gritty… and deeply inspirational.”

“In a time when the achievements of women in every sphere of life have inspired a new generation, it is fascinating to contemplate the work of Francesca Cabrini, an Italian immigrant who came to New York in 1889. She would fit perfectly as a leader in today’s world,” added Sanger.

Christiana Dell’Anna’s film credits include Tensione superficiali, Mr. Happiness and more. She has appeared on the small screen in such series as Gomorrah (HBO Max) and Trust (FX). She’s represented in the U.S. by Cavalry Media, and by Volver Consulenze Artistiche in Italy.

A two-time Oscar nominee, John Lithgow recently earned his 13th Emmy nomination for his supporting turn in HBO’s reimagining of Perry Mason. He’ll next appear in Showtime’s Dexter revival, reprising his role as Arthur Mitchell (aka The Trinity Killer), and in FX’s The Old Man. His recent film credits include Bombshell, Late Night and Pitch Perfect 3. Additional TV credits include The Crown, Trial & Error and 3rd Rock from the Sun. Lithgow is repped by UTA, Anonymous Content and attorney Don Steele at Hansen, Jacobson, Teller, Hoberman, Newman, Warren, Richman, Rush, Kaller & Gellman.

Two-time Emmy nominee David Morse will soon appear in Netflix drama The Chair, opposite Sandra Oh. His recent TV credits include The Good Lord Bird, Blindspot, The Morning Show, The Deuce and Escape at Dannemora. Recent film credits include Thank You for Your Service and Concussion. Morse is repped by UTA, Kipperman Management, Arcieri & Associates, and attorney Diane Golden at Katz Golden Lerner.

Rolando Villazón is an opera singer and director whose credits include Mozart in Prague: Rolando Villazón on Don Giovanni, La Bohèmme and La Traviata. He is repped by Columbia Artists Management.

Monteverde is represented by Sentient Entertainment and attorney Sean A. Marks of Marks Law Group.

Egot Watch: Katrina Lenk and Ari’el Stachel win at Daytime Emmys and are now an Oscar away from the grand slam
Cynthia Erivo
There’s definitely a new quick path to Egot — or at least three-quarters of it. First Cynthia Erivo won a Tony, Grammy and Emmy for “The Color Purple.” Then Ben Platt and Rachel Bay Jones achieved the same triple play for “Dear Evan Hansen.” And on Friday night, May 3, Katrina Lenk and Ari’el Stachel accomplished the same rare feat for their performances in “The Band’s Visit.” It’s thanks to a relatively new category at the Daytime Emmys: Best Musical Performance in a Daytime Program. Check out the complete list of Daytime Emmy Creative Arts winners here.

The Tonys honor the best musicals on Broadway. The Grammys have long done the same with their Best Musical Theater Album category. And since 2016 the Daytime Emmys have honored musical performances on daytime programs, which means singers and theater performers are now able to win for promoting their work on a talk show or morning show.

2018 Tony Award nominations: Reactions to major surprises and snubs in musical categories [Watch]
Shortly after the nominations for the 72nd Tony Awards were announced on May 1, Gold Derby contributing writers Sam Eckmann and David Buchanan chatted via webcam about their first impressions of the Musical categories (Watch our analysis above).

“Mean Girls” and “SpongeBob SquarePants: The Musical” both earned a whopping 12 nominations each, and while Sam thinks both of those shows will see a competitive boost from their nomination tallies, he and David still think “The Band’s Visit” is the frontrunner despite falling one nomination short of its two main competitors. Even if “Mean Girls” doesn’t win the top trophy of the evening, Sam and David both think Tina Fey could take home the award for Best Book, though David warns that “just because it’s chock full of jokes does not a Best Book make.”

The Best Musical Revival category is a nail-biter.
