CBS is rolling out a new NCIS spin-off this fall.

NCIS: Origins will follow a young Leroy Jethro Gibbs and tell new stories about the character made famous by Mark Harmon.

NCIS: Origins is set in 1991, years before the events shown on NCIS.

On the new show, a different actor plays Gibbs, which may frustrate some die-hard NCIS fans who feel there is only one Gibbs.

Some fans also believed the job should have gone to Mark Harmon’s son, Sean Harmon. The younger Harmon guest-starred on NCIS as a young Gibbs in flashback episodes.

A younger Mike Franks (played by Kyle Schmid) is also ready to help the show thrive.

Who plays Young Gibbs on the NCIS: Origins cast?

Actor Austin Stowell has been tasked with playing the younger version of Leroy Jethro Gibbs.

Eve Hewson is in early talks to star in Steven Spielberg’s untitled event film, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

The actress most recently starred opposite Nicole Kidman and Dakota Fanning in Netflix’s limited series, The Perfect Couple. Her other credits include Bad Sisters, Flora and Son, The Knick, Enough Said and This Must Be The Place.

Spielberg’s film would also be a reunion for Hewson and the Oscar-winning filmmaker after they first worked together on his Bridge of Spies. The 2015 film, starring Tom Hanks, follows an American lawyer who is recruited to defend an arrested Soviet spy in court during the Cold War and then helps the CIA facilitate an exchange of the spy for the Soviet-captured American U2 spy plane pilot, Francis Gary Powers.

The cast of NCIS: Origins is in an exciting position to make NCIS history. The stars of the Leroy Jethro Gibbs prequel series will be the first actors cast in an NCIS spinoff positioned in the past. Mark Harmon played Jethro Gibbs in the original series, but Austin Stowell will take over the character in NCIS: Origins' 1991 setting. Instead, Harmon will return to narrate the prequel story and is also part of the production as an executive producer with his son, Sean Harmon. Aside from Gibbs, NCIS: Origins story will bring back other familiar characters with new faces.

NCIS: Origins is the fifth spinoff in the NCIS franchise, but it is, in many ways, the first of its kind. It's the first offshoot to expand on the story of an original NCIS character. The series will delve into the relationship between Gibbs and Special Agent Mike Franks, played by Muse Watson in the original show.

The NCIS Universe has its new Gibbs.

A new NCIS spin-off debuts this fall that will tell stories from the earlier days of Leroy Jethro Gibbs.

The downside for some fans is that Mark Harmon won’t star in the show, even though he does have extensive involvement.

While Mark won’t appear on screen, he will narrate and executive produce NCIS: Origins.

Mark’s son Sean is also involved in the project. Sean played Gibbs during several flashback episodes of NCIS.

Now we know who will play the (new) younger version of Gibbs.

The news comes from CBS Studios and ends months of speculation from fans.
