How ‘Barbie’s’ Existential Crisis Is Reflected by Deflating Her Hair and Changing Her Silhouette
Image
In Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie,” Margot Robbie’s Stereotypical Barbie’s perfectly pink world is rocked to the core when she has an existential crisis during a dance party. What follows is a sequence of events that propel her into an emotional journey as she begins to grow closer to the real world.

“It was important that her evolution into becoming human could be reflected in the hair, makeup and costumes,” says Robbie, who also served as the film’s producer. “So, we started mapping her emotional and physical journey through that.”

Makeup and hairstylist Ivana Primorac used 18 wigs and 30 hair pieces for Robbie to reflect her transformation. Primorac worked closely with costume designer Jacqueline Durran, discussing how that visual shift would take place. Barbie’s “a-ha moment” comes when she lies on the ground feeling “defeated, overwhelmed and hopeless.”

That was where the volume in her hair could change.

‘Maestro’ wins at Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards on the way to Oscars
Image
“Maestro” did well at the Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild on Feb. 18 winning two of its three bids. It claimed the prizes for both period/character makeup and special effects races but lost period/character hairstyling to “Barbie,” which was snubbed by the Oscars. Likewise for “Saltburn,” which won both contemporary makeup and hairstyling.

Of this year’s other Oscar nominees, “Poor Things” lost all three of its bids just hours after pulling off an upset at the BAFTAs, “Golda” and “Oppenheimer” were each defeated in a single race while “Society of the Snow” was snubbed by the guild.

These wins boost the odds for “Maestro” to prevail at the Academy Awards. In the decade-long history of these guild honors, there has been just one year when an Muahs winner did not go on to claim the Oscar for Best Makeup and Hairstyling.

That was two years ago: “Coming 2 America...

Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild 2024 Winners Include ‘Maestro,’ ‘Saltburn,’ and ‘Barbie’
Image
The Oscar-frontrunning “Maestro” was the big winner at the 11th annual Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards (held February 18 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel). Bradley Cooper’s Leonard Bernstein opus took period/character makeup and special makeup effects. This puts “Maestro” in the Oscar driver’s seat (led by two-time winner Kazu Hiro) against “Poor Things,” “Oppenheimer,” “Golda,” and “Society of the Snow.”

Two non-Oscar competitors, “Saltburn”and “Barbie,” split the other wins: Emerald Fennell’s psychological thriller grabbed both contemporary makeup and hairstyling, while Greta Gerwig’s billion-dollar blockbuster snagged period/character hairstyling.

TV winners, meanwhile, were divided among “The Idol” (contemporary makeup), “The Crown” (period/character makeup), “The Last of Us” (special makeup effects), “The Morning Show” (contemporary hairstyling), and “Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story” (period/character hairstyling).

As previously announced, Annette Bening (Best Actress nominee for “Nyad”) received the Distinguished Artisan Award, and Oscar- and Emmy-winning make-up...

‘Barbie,’ ‘Oppenheimer’ Among Top Artisan Awards Season Contenders
Image
This year’s awards-contending films offer a treasure trove of crafts that includes transformations, exquisite sets, lavish costumes, memorable scores and songs and immersive cinematography. The contenders range from newcomers to legends — Variety breaks down the categories below.

Makeup And Hair

Prosthetic makeup designer Kazu Hiro could very well walk away with his third Oscar for his work on Bradley Cooper’s “Maestro.” Transforming Cooper into the legendary composer Leonard Bernstein consisted of five different stages to gradually age the actor. And the guild as well as the Academy love a transformation.

Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” could be a contender in this area, following in the footsteps of the first two films that landed guild nominations. The sheer volume of prosthetics and wigs went into building the characters such as the humanimals, the hybrid of humanoid and animal, and the villain, the High Evolutionary, played by Chukwudi Iwuji.

Barbie Producer Shares Theory on Why the Film Was an Immense Success
Image
Barbie has become one of cinema history's most successful films following its theatrical release in June, and perhaps there's a lesson to be learned from Hollywood on why the movie was such a hit.

Released alongside Oppenheimer as part of the "Barbenheimer" phenomenon, Barbie was directed by Greta Gerwig and stars Margot Robbie in the titular role. In addition to its strong critical praise, which could lead to several Oscar nominations, Barbie was a huge hitter at the box office, banking more than $1.4 billion. Per Deadline, producer David Heyman addressed the film's success, theorizing that Barbie's sense of originality greatly attracted filmgoers, referring to how there's no other film that's really anything like it.

The ‘Barbie’ Team On Why The Movie Became The Biggest Of The Year: “There’s A Real Hunger For Originality” – Contenders London
Image
The production team behind Barbie was on hand at Deadline’s Contenders London event to reveal some of the secrets behind the smash hit’s unique journey and what set it on the road to becoming the year’s biggest movie at the box office.

Greta Gerwig’s acclaimed fantasy comedy, starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, has been a cultural phenomenon this year.

Oscar-nominated producer David Heyman told the audience that much of the film’s appeal comes from its originality: “One of the reasons the film has done so well is because it’s original. There’s a real hunger for originality. Greta Gerwig is a singular artist, she pushes the boundaries of what’s possible in the most collaborative way. The film is fun, thematically rich and very moving. It was challenging, of course, but when we made it, there was a spirit of fun that permeated the production.

Barbie's Horrifying Original Barbie Design Would Have Ruined The Film (But Made One Joke Better)
Image
Original plastic-style look for Barbie and Kens would have ruined the movie, distracting and disturbing viewers. Realistic design allows viewers to appreciate the movie's themes and messages about patriarchy and feminism. The design reflects how women are supposed to see themselves, emphasizing being the best they can be and breaking stereotypes.

Among the many elements of Barbie that have been widely praised by critics and viewers is the design of Barbieland and all the Barbies and Kens, but had the production crew gone with their original Barbie and Ken designs, the movie would have been completely ruined. Greta Gerwig’s Barbie went from being one of the most anticipated movies of 2023 to one of its most successful ones, both with critics and viewers. Barbie has been endlessly praised, and it broke a couple of box office records, becoming one of the highest-grossing movies of 2023.

Barbie Movie's Original Character Designs Were Scrapped for Looking Too Plastic
Image
The Barbie movie's hair and makeup artist revealed that they had to change the original character designs for Barbie and Ken because they looked too much like plastic.

"The Barbie movie took an unexpected turn in its early stages," said Ivana Primorac, the hair and makeup artist behind the iconic doll's beauty looks. She revealed to E! News that the team initially considered giving Barbie and Ken plastic-like features, but they soon realized it wasn't the right approach. She said, "We didn't like all of those things in the end because Barbies are beautiful in every child's mind. So, once we created that fake image it wasn't beautiful."

Mattel Introduces Weird Barbie Doll, Based on Kate McKinnon's Film Character
Image
Filmmaker Greta Gerwig's inspiration for Weird Barbie came from her childhood experiences with used dolls, giving the doll a nostalgic and whimsical vibe. Weird Barbie's design, based on Kate McKinnon's wacky Barbie character in the movie, replicates the iconic pink baby doll dress, short blonde hair with pink and blue highlights, and unique facial features. Weird Barbie can recreate McKinnon's character's gestures and movements, such as hand and arm gestures and the ability to do the splits. The doll is available for pre-order until August 18th and will ship by May 31, 2024.

“It Wasn’t Beautiful”: Original Barbies & Kens Design Was Uncomfortably Close To The Real Toys
Image
The original designs for the Barbie movie had to be scrapped for being too much like the original toys. Scrapping the plastic-style look was a wise move to maintain the overall message of the movie. Barbie can embrace her plastic nature without sacrificing creativity or realism, as shown by the character's viral arched feet moment.

The original designs for the Barbie movie had to be scrapped for being too much like the original toys. While Barbie embraces its status as a movie about toys, it did need to branch out slightly to avoid an uncanny valley effect.

‘Lee’: First Look At Kate Winslet As Pioneering Photographer Lee Miller; Alexander Skarsgård, Andy Samberg, Noémie Merlant, More Join Cast
Image
Exclusive: Here’s the striking first official image of Kate Winslet as Lee Miller in feature Lee.

The image, shot during filming on location in Croatia, shows Oscar winner Winslet as the pioneering American photographer who covered WWII in Europe for British Vogue.

Filming is ongoing on the directorial debut of respected cinematographer Ellen Kuras (Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind).

The film is not being called a biopic by Winslet and the producers, but it does explore the most significant decade of Lee Miller’s life. As a middle-aged woman, she refused to be remembered as a model and male artists’ muse and defied expectations by travelling to Europe to report from the frontline. There, in part as a reaction to her own well-hidden trauma, she used her Rolleiflex camera to give a voice to the voiceless. What Lee captured on film in Dachau and throughout Europe was shocking and horrific.

Among those films that “Darkest Hour” edged out for best special makeup effects was “Wonder,” one of its two Oscar rivals for Best Makeup & Hairstyling. That film contended on the contemporary side here and lost its bid for hairstyling to “Pitch Perfect 3″ and makeup to “Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2.” The third Oscar nominee, “Victoria and Abdul,” was snubbed by the guild.
