Del Castillo, who plays the titular role in the hit Spanish-language adaptation of “La Reina del Sur” will also star in the upcoming series based on the Mexican revolution.
“I am extremely excited to join forces once again with Arturo Pérez-Reverte, especially in a story set in my country. Arturo Pérez-Reverte's supernatural mystery novel, "The Club Dumas," makes for an intriguing, labyrinthine read. Set in a universe where antiquarian booksellers are aplenty, the novel follows Lucas Corso, who is hired to authenticate a manuscript by Alexandre Dumas. Corso is soon led down an increasingly dangerous, absurd path that causes him to flit around the world in search of an elusive truth lost to humanity, specifically, the gates to hell.
Roman Polanski's take on Pérez-Reverte's work culminates in the atmospherically tense "The Ninth Gate," which follows the basic beats of the novel except for its open-ended conclusion. "The Club Dumas" also ends on an interpretative note, but the novel's merit lies in reinforcing its literary-heavy references in a meaningful manner, while the film takes a more loose stance in deepening its convoluted mythos. Almost nothing is explained for clarity, as the film assumes that its religio-mythical metaphors speak for themselves.

Playing the anti-hero Teresa Mendoza in Telemundo’s hit drama “La Reina del Sur” (Queen of the South) has become second nature to its star, Kate del Castillo. In a way, her hectic career as a producer, actor and entrepreneur, mirrors her character’s upstream struggle against patriarchy — sans the guns and contraband.
Speaking via Zoom from the U.K. where she’s working on the indie film “A Cuban Girl’s Guide to Tea & Tomorrow” with director Katherine Fairfax Wright, del Castillo reflected on the parallels between managing the challenges of her multi-faceted career with those faced by Mendoza in the show’s long-awaited third season, which premieres Oct. 18 on Telemundo. “La Reina” is a co-production of Telemundo and Netflix, which has international rights to the series.
The new season sees the titular La Reina taking on the brutal male-dominated cartels of South America once again, picking up four years after U.

Call it Telemundo’s “Game of Thrones.” The Spanish-language network is hoping for a blockbuster premiere tonight for the long-awaited sophomore season of “La Reina del Sur,” the crime drama starring Kate del Castillo that ranks as Telemundo’s most-watched original series ever.
“La Reina” was a massive hit for Telemundo when it aired in early 2011. It also ushered in Telemundo’s strategy of veering from the traditional telenovela format into drama series designed to be renewed for multiple seasons. Telemundo’s “Super Series” run five nights a week for about 60 episodes rather than the 150 or more for telenovelas.
Season two of “La Reina,” which bows tonight at 10 p.m., has been in the works for eight years and lensed shot in eight countries with a hefty production budget by Telemundo standards. Del Castillo reprises her role as crime boss Teresa Mendoza, who was last seen going into witness protection...

What did you think of the premiere of USA's latest series, Queen of the South?
While at the Atx Festsival in Austin, I had the chance to sit down with the cast of Queen of the South to talk about the premiere and what to expect as the series moves forward.
They were quite interested to share their thoughts on this fast paced and engrossing character-driven drama.
I was surprised to learn that most, if not all, of the cast had read the book by Arturo Pérez-Reverte and/or watched the Telemundo version of the show. That was how they first encountered the characters they have grown to love.
There have been some changes for the USA version of the series, but not when it comes to their love of the characters and the story. Alice Braga, who plays the central character Teresa Mendoza, shared her thoughts on her character.
