Due to her father's job, Pooky Quesnel lived in the ethnic republic of Kalmykia in southern Russia for several years as a child. She can be heard speaking fluent Kalmyk in Not Going Out S6E2 ("Skiing") where she plays the part of a pregnant Eastern European woman.

One of seven siblings, she claims to have based her character of Nita in the English TV drama series True Dare Kiss (2007) on one of her sisters. She is also a screenwriter, having contributed scripts to the British television soaps Family Affairs (1997) and Doctors (2000).
